Per Matt Gelb and Todd Zolecki on twitter (if someone can copy/paste the link, I’ll add it here), Zach Collier was suspended 50 games for a positive amphetamine test. This is a pretty big blow, as Collier had experienced an excellent bouneback season after missing all of 2010 through injury. Lets save the character assassinations and over the top overreactions to the news for another time, but this isn’t a great development.

Freddy Galvis and Trevor May win the Paul Owens Award for 2011
Both were highly deserving. That’s all really, feel free to discuss.
Chuck LaMar resigns
All of the beat guys tweet the news within 15 seconds of each other, but I’ll link to David Hale’s tweet, since he’s probably my favorite of the bunch. No word on why yet, but Ruben Amaro is quoted as saying it was a “disappointment”. My guess? He’s going to interview for Scouting Director jobs this winter, and possibly even GM jobs. But we’ll see. It is relevant news here, as he does scouting work, though more on the pro side. Just passing it on.
Around the System–Corner Infield
With the end of the season, comes the final “Around the System” report where we take a look at each player in the organization and how he performed this year, along with a projection as to where the player will begin the 2012 season. We start with the corner infield. Look for the report on Catchers either Friday or Saturday.
GCL
Chris Duffy, 23, Phils 26th round pick in 2010 draft. 28 games at 1B with 3 errors (.987); 8.91 R/F. .293/.399/.504 in 123 AB’s; 6 HR 27 RBI; .282 vs LH, .298 vs RH;.220 with RISP; .395 in August; 14%bb rate/22% k rate. Duffy had a good year but is 23 and in Rookie Ball. I would think Lakewood next Spring. Continue reading Around the System–Corner Infield
Open Discussion, 6 September 2011
Hi all. I am without internet right now, waiting for Comcast to come out and find out why my internet suddenly stopped working Sunday night. I’m not going to labor through a box score recap on my iPhone, so I’ll just create this post to give you a place to keep all your comments. Hopefully I get back up and running in the next day or so. Thanks in advance.
Lehigh Valley Wins WIldcard
There will be more baseball in Allentown as Lehigh Valley has clinched a wildcard position with their rain shortened 4-1 victory over Syracuse, in Syracuse. With the victory, the ‘Pigs are guaranteed to finish higher than Gwinnett in the wildcard race and will open the Division Series with two home games Wednesday and Thursday against division winner Pawtucket. Reading Playoff Situation
Reading has clinched at least a tie with New Britain for the WC. If Reading wins today or NB loses, they are the Eastern Division WC, if NB wins and Reading loses, there’s a one-game playoff Tuesday in New Britain (R-Phils are 2-4 vs NB this year, with both wins coming on the road). Pitchers for today’s Reading game at Binghampton: Brummett (3-8, 4.62) vs. Familia (4-3, 3.38). Rain threatens to cause a few delays (at least) in Binghampton. Lehigh Valley is in a similar situation today, having a 1-game lead in the WC race in the IL heading into a rain-threatened game.
Hot or Not
The final edition this season covering the time period of August 27–September 4, a bit more than a week. By way of scheduling, look for the final editions of “Around the System”, beginning late this week, with Corner Infielders. We will take a look at how each player in the system performed this year, and a projection of where to start each player next season. Observations: Good to see some foreign names on the pitcher hot list (Garner, Colvin, Ramirez)…Nesseth struggling down the stretch…..Mathieson with control issues….Rosenberg and Savery reinventing themselves in the ‘pen….Cody Overbeck over .275 at AAA.
