I would to see another write up of the potential stand outs of the 2011 draft. I just can’t get enough of Tyler Greene or hearing about the rest of the group’s future.
May v. Rodriguez is a tough call. May had more Ks, but its not like J-Rod was some slouch in that department as he has 160 and a K/9 of 9.5. If you use the Pitcher’s Triple Crown statistics, J-Rod has the lead in two of the three by far (ERA and Wins). It is really going to depend what metrics the Phils decide to look at.
I would choose May myself, but it is hard to argue with J-Rod. I think the strongest argument against J-Rod is that he had a very low BABIP this season (.238). My guess on why his BABIP is so low is that he is a flyball pitcher who pitched in a pitcher’s park with excellent outfield defense behind him. In a more neutral environment, his ERA would be a lot higher.
Nice game for Alonso.
Great start for Claypool. Three singles across six innings with 6 Ks, that’s really strong.
Cloyd got hit some but had an overall good start.
This might be straying from the topic a little, but i think it’s alright. Anyway, what I’ve learned is that these minor league organizations we all follow have their own fan bases that root for the Ironpigs, Blueclaws, etc. That is, they’re not rooting for the Phillies and thus rooting on the kids that have a shot to play for the Phils. They’re actually rooting for the Ironpigs or whatever. My perspective is that I am a Phillies fan and therefore i am interested in their minor league system so I can get to know who they have coming up the pipeline. I am not a fan of the Lakewood Blueclaws or any other minor league team.
I remember the Red Barons. Didn’t the Yankees take over that organization?
Anyway, the way I learned about these fan bases is that I was watching a speech by Ryne Sandberg at a banquet. Matt Rizzotti took the mike and he was talking about Andy Tracy. I guess he was seen as Tracy’s heir. Rizzotti kept saying that Tracy was great. And of course he is great only if you’re a fan of the Ironpigs. To a Phillies fan, Tracy was just org filler.
Another thing about the minor leagues is that the names of the teams seem to be deliberately demeaning to the players. How are pigs representative of athleticism and competetiveness and what not, even they are made of iron? How is a blueclaw in any way formidable?
yes, that would be correct—-Yankees however I believe do not use the name ‘Red Barons’ for their Scranton-Wilkes Barre team. That was the Phillies affliate nickname.
It’s not hurting anyone – let the fans of these teams have their fun. While I might not view minor league baseball the same way, a lot of people are totally sick of the modern day athlete and view the minors as a “throwback” game of sorts.
I think so too. The team does not give the award for the best prospect, but, rather, the best performance. May will be close, but the award will almost certainly go to J-Rod. I think Galvis will get his award too due to his proximity to the majors and the fact that he’s played about as well as anyone. Gosh, I’m glad we appeared to have drafted some real hitters in this draft – the cupboard needs to be re-filled.
By the way, I’ve seen some videos of Domingo Santana on the Astros minor league team and he seems to have filled out quite a bit and he hits the living daylights out of the ball. I was very, very sorry to see him go because I never dreamed he was one of the so-called lesser prospects on the PTBNL list we were informed about.
Small sample, but Santana is ripping it with a .462 OBP and a .707 slugging percentage. he had 7 hrs in 358 in Lakewood. He has 5 in 58 for his new club. KO rate down 13%. I also didn’t think the PTBNL was of his quality, but Pence has been worth it.
I wish people would stop telling us how well the guys we traded are doing with the Astros. It was hard enough to see them all go. Not helping. Even though I’m glad they’re having success.
Is the Lexington park smaller than Lakewood’s? In any event don’t worry the Western Division of the SAL League or his next league will figure him out soon and the problems will resurface.
Enough with the “post police” Some like vanilla …… live with it.

Hope they double jump Percival Garner next year to see what he can do against appropriate competition. He has been dominant in the few innings he has pitched this year.
I am absolutely sure Savery starts next year on the roster. The advantages and pub are too much not to give him a chance. Management always wants to look good.

Think that May’s reaching the 200 K number for the first time in the Phillies system for about 20 years will be what gets him the award.

They seem to always give it to high minors guys. Galvis will definitely get the position player’s award. Pitcher could be Schwimer.

At least one guy in the Pence trade hasn’t improved with his new organization. Josh Zeid has a 8.78 era and has given up 3hrs in just 13.1ip
