It is hard to “miss” those guys when the team is going for another greatly possible World Series ring.
Taylor has taken a large step backward, D’Arnaude is still short of the major leagues by two seasons…but Drabek can look forward to some good pitching seasons in Toronto…while Big Roy stays in Philly for 3 (?) more years. There may come a time when we’d love to have Drabek on our staff, but that would be looking backward with some more World Series wins in our rear view mirror.
Its hard to believe they only gave up 11mil money wise for Oswalt. What they GOT 11 mil. Cheese Ed Wade if you had spoke up soon maybe we could of had the Bermuda rectangle.
Very sweet Mr. H but what do you do next. lol
I was/am a big fan of the deal since day 1 but I wouldn’t say I don’t miss them. Drabek would be a nice 5th starter option in 2011 and I still think D’Arnaud and Taylor will be solid major league players.
The only player you could really miss from that deal is Drabek, but I don’t even miss him because it appears we’ve got several young pitchers with the same or greater upside than Drabek. And, while I’m at it, I don’t miss Happ, Villar or Gose. How the team made the Oswalt trade without having to give up Worley, Singleton, Cosart, Colvin , Rodriguez, Ramirez, Aumont, Santana or May is beyond me. How does Ed Wade still have a GM job?
who? ( exactly what i thought) i was there last night nd i mentioned the trade when he came up to bat and it put how he was aquired under his pic! phils gonna miss the prospects but what he has done this year is totally worth it!
Ed Wade didn’t make a terrible deal for Oswalt. Chipping in money was questionable but he got back better players than most teams get on these type of salary dumps. You can’t look at the trade in a vacuum.
He got a cost controlled, #three pitcher, a cost controlled (for six years) firstbaseman, and one of the top ss prospects in the low minors. That is MUCH BETTER than what he got for Schilling or what Cleveland got for CC or Minny got for Santana.
i think that this trade will work out as a true win-win. i personally think that drabek is going to be a top pitcher for the next 10+ years. but we were in a win now mode and we got the best pitcher in base ball. you have to give up something to get something and we gave up potential greatness for greatness right now. i would make that trade any day of the week. but i do think that drabek is going to be breat in the show.
wade got a starting lefthander, who so far is pretty good, but injury prone, a top shortstop prospect and a good hitting prospect for a guy they couldnt resign, he did good for being under the hammer,
In the halladay deal the phils got Toronto to kick in $$ too. The players the phils gave up were good prospects. This deal looks fantastic!! All the people who moan about how bad the cliff lee deal was this halladay deal may be the best deal in the history of the franchise. How under paid is doc!!
In Drabek’s best year, will he win 21 games with a 2.4 era, pitch a perfect game, and pitch a no hitter in the playoffs? Doubtful! And Doc could could still have 4 more starts this playoff run! How does his 1st year as a Phillie compare with Carlton’s 1st year (27 wins on a horrible team)? As for Taylor, I wonder if the Phillies would try to get him back from the Athletics…
I have had the same thought about trying to get Taylor back. AAA player swaps aren’t unprecedented (that’s how Mayberry was acquired). Maybe someone like Mathieson might get him back.
Honestly, I think the only player we “miss” from the Halladay trade is the player we thought M. Taylor would become. We don’t need another starter anytime soon (not that one would hurt) and we’ve got a bevy of young talent in the minors, so we don’t miss the pitching. Chooch is the cather for now and several years to come and Valle has more upside than D’Arnaud, so we don’t miss him. What we miss is another young, hitting outfielder with multiple tools – someone who could readily replace Werth and/or Ibanez. That’s what we thought Taylor would become. I’d definitely try to get him back and relief pitching (Mathieson, Stutes, . . . you get the idea) appears to be what we could offer for that.
I am curious, however, as to what the heck happened to him this year. His stats for the year are a real disconnect from what he did in prior years, including his productive stint in AAA LhV in 2009.
I also have hopes for Taylor being good. A guy who hit like he did for a couple seasons–must have been something wrong last year, health or mental or org adjustment (much like Aumont, maybe). Would not bet against him having a kick-butt year in ’11. Would not mind getting him back, since we need RH hitters and he is maybe two steps better than Mayberry as a hitter. But I think the A’s know he’s good and will be patient. They were patient with Gio and that worked out. (Here’s a big regret: wouldn’t it be nice to have Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez today as our #4/#5 instead of the Freddy Garcia fiasco?)
James, I have to say, this is probably the best post you’ve ever made on this blog.
Drabek could have an All-Star career, Taylor could hit 30 HRs a year for 5 years and D’Arnaud could be the next Chooch and I’d do that trade 1000 times out of 1000.
Last night was baseball history…something we’ll all remember for the rest of our lives. No matter what else happens, we’ll have Doc’s season of 2 no-hitters.
Wow. Just think how good Halladay will be once he shakes off the playoff jitters?
I still think Drabek is a solid #2 (Good Brett Myers years), D’Arnaud is at least an average starting C, and Taylor starts in RF for a few years. Those are solid team pieces all on the cheap. Get an Ace, closer, a couple power hitters and that team has a chance.
I agree with mike77. Oswalt was just a sinkhole of ~$20M. He would be of little value to the Houston who is more than two years away. Ed saved ~$8M of that $20M, got a lesser replacement pitcher, a young middle lineup (maybe) hitter, and a highly regarded SS with good defense (scouts say so, 50 errors do not) and speed. Compare that to the return for Cliff Lee: probable closer, projectable #3 starter, speedy CF. Both dumped a top starter attempting to get a replacement starter, a defensive position, and a high upside missing piece.
I agree with everybody here. Doc is more than an ace. He is beyond surgical, he is sick. I also agree with the folks who said they would love to get Taylor back. I also doubt he will be back.
Oakland actually has outfielders that have passed Taylor so he won’t play for them. My guess is that they would trade him for a starting pitcher at AA or above with potential like Hyatt. I would do that deal in a heartbeat assuming they think Taylor’s bad year is correctable. I had a hunch that a new team would mess up Taylor’s approach and ask him to hit for power because he’s so big but that was never his game. I doubt it will happen but I can still dream of Taylor and Brown in the corners….at least until he does so well there that he becomaes untradeable (or he gets traded elsewhere). Let’s go Roy!
Who isn’t thinking another nohitter. OR two! This Halladay treat was so special because of the quality of the opps. Some have compared this season to Carlton. It is hard to tell because the Phils were soooooo bad back then and this team has been called the best in Phillies history,
Halladay had the best season of any Phillies’ pitcher in my lifetime (born in ’81). But Steve Carlton in that season was just on another planet. Even if you ignore the win/loss record and team context, Carlton had a sub-2.00 ERA in nearly 350 innings. What’s really amazing about Carlton though is that if you have a 97 loss team, it stands to reason that the team defense is not very good. (In fact, take out Carlton and the rest of the team’s ERA was 4.22.) So Carlton probably was not getting a ton of help from the defense.
i was reading something earlier on taylor and it said that they sent him to the fall league to see if he can find consistency. He was getting a lot of people in his ear telling him differnt things to do and was trying different techniques. http://stanford.scout.com/2/1009394.html
