Around the System, Relief Pitchers , Bottom Half

A look at the relief pitching in the lower half of the organization.

Lakewood

Justin Beal, 24, Williamsport: 4 games, 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 4.2 IP 1BB 1K; Lakewood: 8 games, 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA; 14.1 IP 14H 5BB 10K, .280 opp. avg. The Phils 28th round pick in the ’09 draft has done enough to stick around and turn a head or two.

Mike Bolsenbroek, 23, 8 games, 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA; 12.2 IP 15H 7BB 9K, 1.00 GO/AO; .306 opp. avg. 42nd round pick in the ’08 draft hasn’t been great and hasn’t been horrible.

Kyle Carr, 23, Williamsport: 8 games, 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA; 9.2 IP 5H 7BB 9K; Lakewood: 4 games, 5 shutout innings thus far, 3BB 3K. Twins 12th round pick of the ’08 draft out of the University of Minnesota.

Joseph Esposito, 25, Has thrown 5 innings over 2 games, giving up 4 runs.

Ebelin Lugo, 20, 28 games, 4-1 with a 1.45 ERA; 3 saves, 43.1 IP, 35H 14BB 40K, 1.37 GO/AO, .224 opp. avg., .203 vs. LH, .237 vs. RH, .250 with RISP; 1.13 WHIP. Signed by the Phils as a free agent in 2007, Lugo has been one of the nicest surprises in the bullpen.  He has steadily moved up a level a year (’08 GCL, ’09 NYPL) and at 20 certainly shows promise.

Eric Massingham, 23, 26 games, 4-1 with a 4.43 ERA; 3 saves, 42.2 IP, 40H 12BB 29K, 1.16 GO/AO, .242 opp. avg., .254 vs. LH, .235 vs. RH, .231 with RISP. 1.21 WHIP. Massingham was the 25th round pick in last years draft and after dominating at Williamsport last year, has leveled off this year.  Currently on the DL, it will be interesting to see what he can give at full health.

Mike McGuire, 24, Has pitched in 3 games (4.2IP) without allowing a run, while earning a save. Has struck out 6 over those 4.2 IP. A University of Delaware product, he was the Indians 43rd round selection in the 2008 draft.

Chad Poe, 22, Williamsport: 3 games, 0-0 with a 7.11 ERA; Lakewood: 11 games, 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA; 15.2 IP 19H 8BB 13K, .311 opp. avg. Poe has struggled in his limited work this year.

Luke Wertz, 24, 23 games, 0-1 with an 0.79 ERA; 1 save, 45.2 IP, 26H 8BB 40K, 1.35 GO/AO, .166 opp. avg., .150 vs. LH, .175 vs. RH, .200 with RISP. 0.74 WHIP. I simply do not know why Wertz has not been moved.  He has nothing more to prove at this level and is 24.

Williamsport

Brad Banks, 25, 3 games, 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA; 8IP 5H 0BB 3K.

Jacob Borup, 23, 7 games, 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA; 1 save, 12.1 IP, 10H 6BB 8K, .238 opp. avg.

Garrett Claypool, 21, 4 games (2 starts), 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA; 10IP 7H 4BB 12K, .200 opp. avg. 11th round pick from UCLA.

Craig Fritsch, 22, 7 games (2 starts); 1-0 with a 0.49 ERA; 18.1 IP 7H 10BB 16K, .117 opp. avg., 0.93 WHIP. The Phils 16th round pick out of Baylor, Fritsch has looked very good out of the gate.

Chase Johnson, 22, 12 games, 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA; 9 saves, 13.1 IP 13H 10BB 13K, 1.70 GO/SO, .260 opp. avg., .118 with RISP.  Johnson, the Phils 21st round pick, has been thrust into the role of closer in Williamsport and has performed pretty well.

Siulman Lebron, 23, Lakewood: 14 games, 1-2 with a 6.68 ERA; 32.1 IP 47H 7BB 35K, .333 opp. avg., 1.67 WHIP. Williamsport: 5 games, 0-1 with a 1.69 ERA, 10.2 IP 7H 3BB 8K. Lebron was hit around pretty good in Lakewood and has only made one July appearance in Williamsport.

Bryan Morgado, 21, 4 games, 0-0 with a 4.26 ERA in 6.1 IP. 8BB 9K.

Julian Sampson, 21, 8 games, 1-2 with a 4.60 ERA; 15.2 IP 21H 4BB 15K, 1.07 GO/AO; .323 opp. avg. Sampson continues his status as one of the biggest enigmas in the organization.

Juan Sosa, 20, 10 games, 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA, 3 SV, 18.1 IP, 15H 9BB 19K, 0.65 GO/AO, .224 opp. avg., .313 with RISP, 1.30 WHIP. Sosa has opened some eyes after struggling in limited time in the GCL last year.

GCL

Tim Brown, 23. Just signed this passed week.

Lendy Castillo, 21, 7 games, 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA; 16.2 IP 8H 8BB 19K, .143 opp. avg., Has looked very promising in his transition to the mound.

Neal Davis, 22. Another very recent signee.

Orlando Garces, 19, 8 games, 1-0 with a 3.95 ERA; 13.2 IP 21H 6BB 15K, .356 opp. avg. Has been hit hard in the early going in the States after two seasons in the VSL.

Juary Gomez, 20, 10 games and has not allowed a run, 3 saves; 14.2 IP 9H 3BB 13K, 1.15 GO/AO; .184 opp. avg. Has been excellent thus far.

Matt Hutchinson, 22, 7 games, 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 1 save, 18.1 IP 13H 5BB 7K, .200 opp. avg.. A nice start.

Tyler Knigge, 21, 5 games, 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA; 16IP 11H 7BB 18K, .186 opp. avg.

Miguel Nunez, 17, 3 games (1 start); 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA; 8.2 IP 9H 5BB 6K.

Jesus Pirela, 21, 7 games in Williamsport, 1-1 with a 7.59 ERA; 10.2 IP 8H 12BB 15K. GCL: 4 games, 0-0 with a 2.35 ERA; 7.2 IP 5H 2BB 6K.

Marshall Shuler, 22, 10 games, 2-2, 1.50 ERA; 1 SV, 12IP 9H 8BB 11K, .225 opp. avg., Late round draft pick out of COlorado School of Mines.

Jordan Whatcott, 25, 7 games, 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA. 2 SV, 8.2 IP 1BB 8K.  At 25, is ancient for this league.

  1. I like Claypool’s potential. I went to the College World Series and saw him in Omaha. Hard thrower. Any inside scoop of what the Phillies think of him? By the way, what is a 25-year old (Brad Banks) doing at Williamsport?

  2. There is no Brad Banks at Williamsport there is a Brad Blanks 25. A better question might be why is Jordan Whatcott 25 in the GCL. Whatcott was an undrafted free agent who completed College and also a Mormon mission. Seiler’s website listed him as one the best available UDFA’s after the draft , FWIW. These guys are relief candidates and they have a short time to maybe show something and move up, if not they will help to fill a roster. There are some 1,500 plus players from North America selected in the draft every year, not all can be bright and shiny young uber prospects, there are not that many. MLB organizations have some 6000 minor league players under contract or more at any given time, they can not all be bright and shiny young prospects, there are not that many. True prospects are scarce and that is why they cost so much.

  3. Bolsenbroek is 6’8 you can’t teach 6’8. McGuire is 6’7 so that goes maybe slightly lesser than that for him, but he’s a year older . They say McGuire and Esposito were two of the better relievers at the Atlantic League All-Star game, FWIW.

Ebelin Lugo looked to like he had big hands, Looked like a 5 fingered version of Antonio Alfonseca to me.

Borup- right around 87 mph by device in RF when I seen him . everything 85-89.

Alot of the drafted pitchers in Williamsport and some others seem to have good K/IP ratios. Draft looking better than at first.

Like Juan Sosa, up to 94, last strikeout on a 76 mph pitch. Went 3 1/3 innings in relief, does alot of long stints in relief, maybe he starts by end of season.

Pirela- around 91 mph steady, walks quite a few, and strikes out quite a few, maybe they can work him some more and move him up at some point.
