Transactions Update

Quick update as I am out in Chicago for the Phils series against the Cubs and experiencing Wrigley for the first time…First Reading OF Quintin Berry was picked up by the San Diego organization after being designated for assignment by the Phils, who needed a 40 man roster spot.

Reliever Chad Durbin was activated by the Phils, returning the bullpen to full strength for the first time all season.  Nelson Figueroa was the victim of this activation, as I am sure the Phils hope he clears waivers and accepts an assignment to Lehigh Valley to continue to give them the insurance he has provided thus far.  Also, reliever Antonio Bastardo was activated and optioned to AAA Lehigh Valleym giving the ‘Pigs some interesting roster decisions coming up as well.

  1. Figueroa did a wonderful job, but at this point if we lose him, I think it’s time to see if Carpenter can fill his role the next time the Phils need a spot starter/ long relief guy.

  2. Greg,
Nelson Figueroa does not have to clear waivers to be sent to Lehigh Valley because he cleared waivers in early June since this is the same waiver period he does not have to clear again as long as he stays on the 40-man roster. He would have to clear if the Phillies want to open another spot on the 40-man roster but since they are at 39, I think they will keep him on the 40-man roster.

The current waiver period is from May 1, to July 31. Once a player clears waivers in that period, he can be sent up and down between the minors as much as the major league club likes without having to clearing waivers again.

  3. NEPA Philly,
Thanks for the update. I did not know about that rule.
I think Figueroa is quite valuable and if Herndon was not a Rule 5 keeper would be a better option as a spot starter or long reliever in the bullpen.

  4. Figueroa was designated for assignment. The procedure for Designated for Assignment is that the player goes through waivers first. If waivers are cleared,Then player can be traded or removed from the 40 man roster and sent to the minors, or released. The recounting of the rule on Cot’s Baseball Contracts does not give exceptions to this procedure of Designated for Assignment. The thing may be that if Figueroa clears and accepts minor league assignment, he could be traded past the July 31 trade deadline without going through waivers again, but the procedure for Designated for Assignment is not varying according to the information available.

  6. Thanks EC…that would be great if true…maybe the chips will start to fall with Hernandez coming back to the Lakewood rotation with a bump up for Hyatt to RDG to make room for Jarred and possiblly Naylor or Worley to LHV to make room for Hyatt.
