Several transactions by Lehigh Valley today. Brian Bocock was outrighted to Lehigh Valley after being designated for assignment and was placed on the active Lehigh Valley roster. 2B/SS Keoni DeRenne who hit .250 in his 12 AB’s with Lehigh Valley was sent down to Reading, making room for Bocock.
Relief Pitcher Brian Gordon (hip strain) and Starting Pitcher Brian Mazone (turf toe) were placed on the disabled list. I would expect Mazone’s “turf toe” to clear up, just after the all star break. JA Happ was officially added to the Lehigh Valley roster and will start this evening.
One more transaction of note, Reading OF Quintin Berry was designated for assigment as the Phils needed room on the 40 man roster with the activation of Ryan Madson.
A bunch of slop. Thanks, Gregg.

The time is up for Berry. He could never get over the hump in his last 2 seasons.

I could see Berry re-signing with the team if he clears. What’s the point of signing with another org at this point? I think the Phils would take him back, provided he isn’t on the 40 man.

It wouldn’t shock me if Berry was claimed by another team. He has to stay on the 40 man roster but has options left. Maybe he’s a defensive replacement/pinch runner on a bad ML team.

Why don’t the Phillies sign Hank Blalock and tell him “hey, Buddy, if you want to stay here, you’re playing third base”? Seems like a no-lose proposition to me. Blalock is 29 – maybe he’s washed up, but if he isn’t he could be a nice find. Like our very own Michael Leighton.

What leads you to believe Hank Blalock or Garret Atkins or any of those guys are the answer?

I rather have Blalock pinch hit in extra innings than Cody Ransom

Not sure I’d want Blalock pinch hitting tonight!!!!

Some more of the anybody who ever played 3B anywhere at any time is the answer here. Blalock hasn’t played 3B for years. He is no longer much good at it , by reports, nor is he much good at 1B either, nor is he much of a DH even, as illustrated by him being waived out of the American League. He would not be bettter than Dobbs or Ransom in any role or capacity, just somebody to clog the roster.

Maybe I am wrong for feeling this way, but who cares about Berry at this point? I mean, at one time I considered him a viable prospect, but not really anymore.
Part of my feelings are based on the fact that the Phillies have loaded up on OF prospects in the minors, along with Ben Francisco being at the MLB level and Dom Brown being in AAA. And if anybody gets protected on the 40-man, I would think Harold Garcia is more deserving at this point.
