  1. Aumont’s last 5 games have been pretty good. In those 5 games:

    20 IP, 12 H, 5 ER, 25 K, 10 BB, 2.25 ERA

The walks have to improve but you gotta like those Ks.

Mario Hollands has also been solid in his last two outings. It’s good to see that.

Biddle and 17 year old Miguel Nunez had ugly outings yesterday.

I didn’t see Dugan in any boxscores yesterday. i don’t think he’s played since June 20th or so. I see he’s active on the roster though.

  2. Duran played for Williamsport, didn’t see Dugan. The only thing I seen on Dugan was from the WPT website, it said he had an infection removed and will have an indefinite time off.

Aumont was worked back into starting and now the increased strikeouts may put him back on the developmental improvement track. Wonder about the Reading pitching coach vis-a-vis the Clearwater coach.
Or the Reading coaches overall as alot of hitters don’t seem to progress there , either. Maybe the increase of difficulty may be the factor, maybe not.

Speaking of the Reading Roster, Quinton Berry’s name is now missing from it. They couldn’t of just forgotten to put it there, could they? Don’t see him on any other rosters or any transactions. You’d think he just stay on till somebody removed him.

  3. I don’t see how you can criticize the hitting coaches in Reading. Rizzotti and Brown lit up the place and, after a slow start, Overbeck seems to be coming around. Also, on pitching, many players took a step forward. I think they just threw too much at Aumont at one time – when you combine the advancement of a level, with a change from relief to starting, with a change in arm-angle and the enormous pressure of being the centerpiece of the Lee deal, it’s not surprising that Aumont took a step backwards. Still, I am thrilled that Aumont pitched so well yesterday. I like Aumont, both personally and as a pitcher. He’s smart and he’s motivated and, if you see tapes of his pure stuff, it can be electric. People can write him off if they want, but I still think he can be a very good pitcher, perhaps even a dominant pitcher.

  4. Marfis- a few years back Nowheels was really riding hard on the Reading coaches. Especially their treatments of pitchers – his comments were something to the effect of ‘there’s something rotten in Reading’. Might have been the 08 season? I don’t know, but by the end of the year I was buying into the conspiracy.

With Aumont I think it’s just a case of him being too young for the league combined with the switch to starter, change of mechanics etc. AA is a hard place to do those things. Especially being so young (20!!).

Hypothetically- If Joe Savery were to go back to hitting/playing 1st base, where would they send him to start out?

  5. Both Aumont and Gillies have time to make up from their horid starts. Both were considered young for Reading. I think you will see both in Reading next year. I think they have too much potential.

    Rice?

Seriously though…probably Clearwater or maybe even Lakewood.

  7. WIP- 10 minute interview with Ruben Amaro Jr. Conducted by Al Morganti. Said he didn’t want to bring up Brown “to be the saviour”, big guys got to hit better, wants Werth to “pick it up”, If big guys don’t hit, it won’t matter what Pitchers he acquires:, wants to resign Werth, etc.

That make you dumber, also. Would not think it could.

I just put something on Trade Chatter that may be of general interest.

  8. marfis, your post doesn’t make sense. Especially your second paragraph.

Listening to these GMs is also a waste of time. There is no point in them telling the public their intentions. Doing so puts them in a weaker bargaining position.

I don’t understand why fans hang on every word amaro says. Most of it is lip service. Let me know when amaro makes a move and I’ll listen.

  9. Dugan is alive? assumed that meant he played, but didn’t see him anywhere. I’d also heard he was home recovering. Anyone know what PP meant by saying he’s alive?

  10. Hypothetical question considering the trade talks between the Mariners and Yankees involving Lee and Montero.

Would you rather have traded Lee (strictly speaking prospects) for the package we got or a package involving Montero and 1 or 2 lesser prospects that more than likely we wouldn’t even talk about?

  11. I’m not ready to write off any of the guys we got for Lee yet. They’re all still very young and have all showed flashes of big-time talent. Gillies has been hurt all year, but looked great in spring training. Aumont was terrible in AA, but still has that big-time fastball, and if he never develops into a top starter, could probably be converted to a closer (which the Phillies could use). J.C. has been consistent, but has a ways to go to meet his potential.

  13. Can’t give up on any of the guys in the Lee trade. Remeber when we got almost nothing for Bobby Abreu? Well, one of those guys, Jesus Sanchez, has a sub 3 ERA at Clearwater as a starter.

  14. Carlos Monasterios starting for Dodgers until DL’ed due to blisters was also in that trade. But, It was addition by subtraction , especially on the salary front.

  15. Montero is a better prospect than any of the guys the Phillies got, but if he can’t stick at catcher, the Phillies would have just had to flip him for someone else and there’s always the chance of that not working out well.

  16. I was at the Lakewood game last night. A few impressions:

    – Villar made a very nice play on a sharp ground ball up the middle in the 6th inning that turned out to be Delmarva’s first hit. He ranged way to his left, made a diving stop, scrambled to his feet and made a strong throw to first. I know he has a lot of errors this year, but he sure does seem to have some skills.

    – Wertz was brilliant out of the bullpen. He struck out the side in the 7th or 8th. On the third strike of the last out, the batter ended up on his knees after a cartoonish half swing at a pitch that looked to be two feet outside. He’s a 6-foot righthander who throws in the low 90s, so the ceiling is not very high, but Wertz looks like he’s ready to be challenged by the next level.

    – My keen amateur scouting instincts tell me that the fellow who was behind the plate for the first seven innings will be in the big leagues very soon. In all seriousness, Ruiz looked mostly good at the plate (two well struck doubles in his first two ABs) but a little rusty behind it. The Shorebirds were 2 for 2 in steal attempts against him. On the first one, Ruiz nearly sailed the throw into centerfield. The second one appeared (from 18 rows up on the first base side) to be a bad call.

    – Zeid looked decent, but his fastball topped out at 89 or so.

    – Singleton was 1 for 3, but he hit everything hard. There were a couple of pitches he seemed to just miss on.

    – Buschini made a few nice defensive plays at third.

    – Barnes left the game with what appeared to be an ankle sprain.

  17. Yankees are close to getting Cliff Lee ..trade could be done today according to the NY Post .
Amaro looking for a # 2 pitcher ???? Whats wrong with this picture ?

Didn’t we have Lee under contract for 9M this year ? Why did they offer Blanton 9M ?

If Yankees get Lee just end the season now and give them the trophy and put everyone else out of their misery .

  18. There is another BA report, a premium report, on player and organizations.

Cosart and Singleton were shown as stock up as well as the Phillies system. Said one would think the system would be depleted, but it’s not. They say no system has more in A ball than the Phils.

  19. All I read on this site is Rizzoti-a lot of it critical. So I look up his stats- .362 and 44 rbis. What do the critics want? And he’s playing a position where the big club has an all-star. If a young man is willing to bus around the minors looking for a shot in an age when Mr. James deserts his home region-which adored him-then he deserves our support. Go Matt!

  20. He’s 24 and in AA and the power just suddenly occurred with the jump to AA. He’s not doing anything wrong, there’s just not enough of a sample size for him to be worth anything tradewise and he can’t play anything but 1B.

  21. I think you need to re-read about Rizzotti. No one is criticizing him. People just point out, and rightly so, that based on his past performance, this is an outlier year. Is it real? We don’t know yet, we just need to see more of this years performance through the rest of the summer and hopefully into next year.

This isn’t critical, just honest. He is having one hell of a year.

  23. Question about the Phillies system on BA chat

Tom (NJ): With all the trades the Phillies have made, I think their system is still quite strong. Are they top 5 in your mind?

John Manuel: The subcriber-only piece I did (Prospect Pulse) as a companion talks a bit about that. Not sure if they’re top 5 but the system is definitely replenished. I would assert no other org has as much talent in its two A-ball full-season clubs as the Phils, and their best prospect is getting ready at Triple-A in Brown. Everyone I talked to mentioned how good Clearwater and especially Lakewood are, and Lakewood probably is the most talented roster in the minors, especially when Cosart was healthy. Cosart & Colvin were quite a combo — got a report that Colvin touched 97 in the seventh inning of a recent start — and Pettibone has made significant progress. The hitters got all the attention at Lakewood early this year, and the pitchers deserve some as well. Then Justin DeFratus hit 98 in the FSL all-star game and Clearwater started getting almost as much praise.

  24. In BA’s mid-season report, Singleton is listed as top 50, Michael Taylor is not. At this point, would fans trade Singleton for Michael Taylor? Would Oakland do that trade? Based on the Phillies’ current position, I would.

  25. In the same chat as mentioned above Brown is mentioned as the clear front-runner for the BA minor league POY. So that’s pretty cool.

Also, they mentioned Pettibone both in that chat response and in the Phillies system section of the ‘stock up’ article. He doesn’t really get much play around here, but that’s twice he’s been mentioned in the same breath as Cosart, Colvin, and May. I was wondering what you all thought of him.

  26. On Pettibone … I like the performance, bur from what I recall, I think he sits in the high 80s with his fastball. Don’t know what to make of his peripherals. Hits to IP (60/68) are good, but he’s got a low K rate. Not saying his velocity means he won’t perform, but it surely gives him less room for error. Would like to hear what people who have actually seen him think as I too think it’s interesting he’s getting some national press.

  29. Rizzo continues to hit AA lefthanded pitching by going 2 for 3 against the Senators lefty with one driving in the first Reading run and Worley gets the second run in on his solo second home run in his career against Harrisburg after hitting his first homer against them last year.

Rizzo continues to struggle with hard hit ground balls as one goes off his glove in the 8th for Harrisburg’s second hit off of Worley. Worley now has a two hit shutout after eight innings.

  33. Mike77,

I wouldn’t make that deal unless I’m convinced that Singleton can’t play the OF. Until then, I’d take Singleton and the 6 years age difference over Taylor

  34. In Williamsport Kyrell Hudson now with 7 hits in 57 AB’s. .123 average. 0 for his last 26.

In his minor league career so far, he is at 94 AB’s and 13 hits for a combined batting average of .138

Yikes!! Has any recent Top 5 rounds pick been this bad thru the first 100 AB’s?
