Williamsport, 7-9, T-5th in the NYPL Pinckney Division
The Crosscutters had a rough week, going 2-5, including a sweep at the hands of the State College Spikes. They now sit in a tie for last place, but trail the division leaders by only 2 games.
Jamestown beats Williamsport 6-3
The offense managed only 4 hits on this night. Mike Dabbs was 1/3 with a 2B, RBI and R. Hudson, Hernandez and Duran picked up the other base hits. Mario Hollands gave up 4 ER on 6 H and a BB in 3 IP to take the loss. He struck out two.
Auburn beats Williamsport 6-1
The offense was again awful on this night as Kyrell Hudson doubled for the only hit of the game for the Crosscutters. Julio Rodriguez took the loss after giving up 3 runs (1 earned) in 3 IP. He allowed 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 4.
Williamsport beats Auburn 4-0
In an offensive outburst the Cutters collected 8 hits on this night. Duran went 2/4 with a 2B, R and RBI. Dabbs also added a 2B, R and RBI while Hudson and Santana each had a hit in 4 ABs. Kevin Angelle was impressive again. He pitched 5.1 innings of 2 hit ball, allowing 2 hits and 4 walks while striking out 8. Sampson followed with 1.2 innings of hitless relief. He walked one and struck out 2.
Williamsport beats Auburn 4-1
Four players had multi-hit games in this win. Cameron Rupp was 2/3 with a 2B, R and 3 RBI. Miguel Alvarez was 2/4 with a 3B and RBI. Santana was 2/4 with a R and Hernandez went 2/3 with 2B, BB and 2 R. Eric Pettis was simply dominant on the mound. He allowed only one hit in 7 innings while racking up 9 strikeouts to go to 2-0 on the season.
State College beats Williamsport 8-3
Rupp was 1/3 with a 2B and 2 R. Hernandez and Matt McConnell added two hits each. 7th Rd pick David Buchanan made his first appearance and gave up 2 ER on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 1. Jesus Pirela took the loss after allowing 5 ER on 2 H and 5 BB in only 1/3 IP.
State College beats Williamsport 5-4
Dabbs was 3/4 with a R and SB. Alvarez went 1/5 with an RBI and 2 R. Jake Smith showed some signs of life with a 3/4 night that included two doubles and a run scored. Hollands went 5 innings in a no-decision. He allowed 2 ER on 4 H. He struck out 8 and did not walk a batter.
State College beats Williamsport 8-2
Dabbs had another multi-hit game as he went 2/4. Jeff Cusick was also 2/4 with a 2B and R. Rodriguez took the loss after giving up 4 R (3ER) on 5 H and a BB in 6.2 IP. He struck out 7. Sampson followed and allowed 4 ER on 6 H and a BB in 1.2 IP. He struck out 1.
So far, so good:
Eric Pettis: 2-0, 17 IP, 9 H, 1 BB, 20 K, 0.53 ERA
Pettis was the Phillies 35th round pick in this past June’s draft. The righthander out of UC Irvine has been downright dominant to start the season. He served as both a starter and the closer during his time at Irvine. He’ll merit watching to see if he can continue at this clip until he moves to Lakewood or if this is simply the case of an experienced college pitcher making inexperienced hitters look bad. He’ll turn 22 this week.
Kevin Angelle: 2-0, 19.1 IP, 9 H, 6 BB, 20 K, 0.47 ERA
Angelle was the Phillies 32nd round pick in the 2009 draft out of San Jacinto JC. The 6’2 lefty is following up last season’s solid campaign in the GCL (57 IP, 19 BB, 42 K, 1.89 ERA) with an even better showing in the NYPL. It’s always nice to see the K/9 jump from 6.6 to 9.4. He turned 22 in February, so he’ll need to start climbing the ladder to get into intriguing prospect territory.
Not So Hot:
Jake Smith: 5/38, 4 2B, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 16 K, .132/.146/.237
Smith was a 15th Rd pick in the 2010 draft out of the University of Alabama. As you can see by his numbers, he is off to a terrible start. He also pitched for the Tide, so maybe a switch to the mound is in Smith’s future.
Julian Sampson: 4 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 13.50 ERA
It’s a small sample size for the 2007 12th Rd pick, but it’s disheartening in itself to see Sampson at Williamsport. He was a guy that I, along with others, felt was ready to break out going into last season at Clearwater. He wound up posting a 7.36 ERA in 17 games (15 starts) with only 37 Ks to 27 BBs in 69.2 IP.
Cody: Thanks for this, nicely done!

Sampson- despite his experience is still around the 5th youngest pitcher on squad.
Jake Smith- the man hit around .260 in College with an aluminum bat, so why the lofty expectations, hitting wise. I checked out the team Friday night , Alonso 3B and Smith 1B, Alonso seems very good defensively and so far has hit a little more, so I guess he would hold that 3B spot for the duration unless, maybe, they sign Hinson and assign him to Williamsport. I also doubt Smith plays much at 1B over the good fielding Jeffrey Cusick, or if Dugan ever returns. Don’t see much DH’ing either, so maybe this draft choice can go down as iffy.
OF’s I’d say that Santana, Miguel Alvarez, and Hudson are all very good defensively with good throwing arms. Santana made a good running catch in deep right center, and all the throws were right on target. Offensively, Santana has tailed off a bit, but hit a deep drive to Right Friday jammed in between a couple Strikeouts. Alvarez looks to be the guy they would call up to a higher level if needed now, and he is up around team leader in most all the offensive categories. Also good defensively. Kyrell Hudson also a good defender and looks like he will hit eventually.
Cesar Hernandez looks like will be a good average hitter. Cameron Rupp, though not having good overall results yet, looks like he has good balance at the plate and can be developed into a hitter.
Pitcheirs-
David Buchanan- started Friday- looks like better and faster stuff than the average non-descript pitcher, but gave up a couple of runs in the first, in his first professional appearance and was out of there.
Jesus Pirela- looks like a good fastball right around 91 mph but gave up 5 walks, five runs, and was also gone after an inning.
Juan Sosa- the only semi-impressive pitcher , to me, FB wide ranging some around 88, up to 94 alot around 92. Got last out in appearance with an offspeed at arond 74, so might be something to work with. Did 3 1/3 innings in relief.
Jacob Borup- been used alot in Middle Relief so far. Did not get good results and boxscores seem to indicate a trend so far.
Right around 87, usually, with range from 85 to 89, command and control isssues.

I was unable to attend the first two Williamsport/Vermont games due to a family illness but I’ll be there tonight. Hopefully, I’ll be able to give some good first hand observations and maybe talk to some scouts if they’re there behind home plate. Kinda annoyed I had to eat it on 2 sets of 2 tickets now but its not a major issue I guess.

I just got back from the Cutters game…thoughts on what I saw. First of all, it was about 94 degrees with no wind so the bats were pretty quiet. Both teams looked beat down out there from the heat so it wasn’t a hit fest by any means.
On Domingo Santana: I was not all that impressed with him. He’s very passive at the plate…has a long swing and looks like he’d be overwhelmed by more advanced pitching (as he was in Lakewood). He’s very patient. He takes alot of pitches but he seemed to have trouble making contact even when he had good pitches to swing at. Tought to gauge a guy on one outing. I really wish I could have made the other two games but real life intruded. Physically, its hard to believe he’s just 17. He’s a big kid who really looks like he’s gonna bulk out a bunch as he matures. He looks like a 1B/LF type more than anything. Just on his size, not girth. He’s not out of shape by any means.
Also, Cameron Rupp has a brutal metal bat swing…scouting reports from the draft on him were quite accurate on that. It might go far if he makes contact but contact isn’t a common thing for him with a wooden bat. Behind the plate, he’s nothing special. Nowhere close to where D’Arnaud was at the same level. He needs time to adjust to wooden bats…a lot of time.
Long way to go on both though.
