Anthony Gose, who had a solid full season debut in 2009, took the voting for #5 with 46% of the vote. Domingo Santana took 22% of the vote, and it was a mish mash behind those two. Gose now rounds out the top 5, which is Domonic Brown, Trevor May, Phillippe Aumont, Tyson Gillies and Gose. The voting in the next 5 should be interesting, and will be really wide open once we get past the top 10. Without giving away all of my secrets, I had Brown, Gillies and May as my #1, 2 and 3 on my upcoming Top 30. We’ll get to the voting for #6 now…
01. Domonic Brown, OF
02. Trevor May, RHP
03. Phillippe Aumont, RHP
04. Tyson Gillies, OF
05. Anthony Gose, OF
06.
Went with Valle at this spot. He is an athletic catcher who is showing signs of figuring things out at the plate. Think he is primed for a break-out type of season that ends with him playing in Clearwater. He is still 3-4 years away but the organization has apparently decided he was the best of the catching prospects.

I also went with Valle. Santana up next, but I want to see more from him before I would move him in front of Valle.

I’ll keep picking Santana until the rest of the group make him the majority…..Santana will be the next great Phillies prospect, I just will have to wait until 2012 for the rest of the fanbase to realize it….thats ok though since he’ll still be a teenager.

Whether Valle stays at catcher or is moved to the IF, his bat should play. I like Santana, too, but one short season in the GCL at 16 doesn’t say a whole lot one way or the other.

valle is at a higher level, santana would be my next vote. I’m going based on what has been done, and not what possible would be done down the road,

I went with valle this time. He is the best option at this point for a combination of talent shown, potential for more, and position in the system. My next vote will go to JC Ramirez who falls really close to valle in my book. After those two it becomes more muddled with the short season potential guys like santana, cosart, singleton and colvin. I love bastardo and maitheson but i dont see them this high on the list.

I can’t believe no one has voted heavily for JC Ramirez yet, he is young and 6’3 225 pounds. He has great mechanics, and throws from a 3/4 arm slot. Most importantly he has a consistent release point. He has a pretty solid change, a pretty curveball and a good four seamer that he can dial up to 96 (throws more comfortably at 94/93). I think he is one of the best parts of the trade because of the consistent release point. I watched him pitch for the Wisconsin Minor League Affiliate when I had to come up there to visit my girlfriend’s family. God knows I am not from Wisconsin… and he is really solid. I was excited to see him acquired in a trade.

I vote J.C. Ramirez. Potential as a starter, and higher level of experience raises him above what the others can show at this point.

I’m a huge Valle fan and I believe I was the first person to write him in on last years reader top 30 – be that as it may – I voted for Domingo Santana.
What he did as a 16 year old is nothing short of remarkable. You can get lucky and get a few extra hits, but you don’t get lucky and jack a few over the wall – not at sixteen. Sure, he’s got a lot to work on, but he’ll start the season as a 17 year old – plenty of time – and superstar potential.

I voted for Santana again. His potential is huge. Valle also has the potential to be a star at a very tough position so I can’t argue against him. So I don’t delude myself I always remember the following: Potential has never won a single game. It’s never made one great man (or woman). It’s only a possible future outcome.
Bastardo and Cosart are also close by. Ramirez will probably fall just outside my top 10.

I went with with Santana due to his huge potential. To show such promise at 16 is unlike any Phils prospect in a long, long time. Obviously, he has room to improve. But, I gave him the nod over Valle.

Gotta go with Valle here – there’s just too much projection with the rest of the guys. They all have really high ceilings, but are just too far away to really gauge.

JC Ramirez again, next 4 or 5 are going to be really tough to pick. Santana is just too far away, need to see a little more, we’ll have plenty of time to vote him a #1 or 2 prospect.

Bastardo again for me. Happy to see the excitement for the lottery tickets. I will keep an eye on them like everyone else. And vote for them when the guys who have performed significantly are off the board.

JC Ramirez, for like the third time.
OT: Mike Taylor is rated as a five star prospect by BP, and #2 overall in the A’s system. Another guy, Adrian Cardenas, is #9 and still listed at 2B.

A couple of pro-Ramirez comments, but the poll doesn’t really reflect that at all. Looks like we’ll be voting for him for another couple of rounds before he gets put up on the board.

I went with Valle again, with Santana next on my board, and then on to the pitchers for me. Valle’s production at a premium position is the bigger factor for me right now.

“OT: Mike Taylor is rated as a five star prospect by BP, and #2 overall in the A’s system. Another guy, Adrian Cardenas, is #9 and still listed at 2B.” UGH.
Anyway, it seems to me that it’s pretty hard to rate the remaining guys in this next group. I voted for Santana, but can understand why people are pushing Ramirez – and you could also make a good argument for Bastardo, Mathieson, Colvin, or Cosart. I think, by mid-season, a whole lot is going to change in terms of these rankings.

I’ll go with Valle here. I like Santana, but too many guys like D’Arby Myers have teased us with good GCL numbers and then fallen off the map. I long ago promised myself I would stop over-interpretting GCL results.

You could throw Valle in that group too. Buy the way, I formally withdraw my suggestion that he play third. I think we’re going to need him as a catcher since we traded everyone else.

Now that the Mexican League season will be over this week hope Valle gets a couple of weeks off before catchers and pitchers report in mid Feb. For a 19 year old he has played about 150 games with around 550 plate appearances, a significant number as a DH, between Willliamsport, Lakewood and Mochis. Combined has hit around .270 with 18 homers including one in the Sally playoffs. Not bad especially playing in those pitcher friendly stateside parks. His catching looked good to me when he was behind the plate on those netcast games early in the Mexican season. Should be ready to have a break out year at Clearwater. He gets my vote here.

Went with Ramirez and I’m surprised more readers aren’t doing the same. The rest of these guys could pass him in 2010, but with the possible exception of Valle, they haven’t shown much yet at all.
I’m excluding Bastardo because I no longer consider him a prospect. Barring injury, he has a spot on the opening day roster and hopefully pitches well enough to stick.
btw- perhaps you should include 2009 statistics next to the names. Just a thought.

Bastardo got my vote here.
I’m not gung-ho about my vote because Bastardo is not a high-ceiling guy. He’s smallish, doesn’t throw especially hard, has shoulder issues and gave up 4 long balls in his short stint with the club in ’09. However, he’s got a good change-up and as a lefty reliever he’s going to get a great opportunity to contribute this season.
When he struggled at A+ and AA he was able to bounce back and succeed the following year. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll be effective in a limited bullpen role for the Phillies this season.
Opportunity is knocking.

As I posted earlier I went with Santana based on his impressive start at such a young age. Physical tools are also impressive so all he needs is a good spiritual adviser, yoga instructor, zen master, padre, (not the MLB team) transcendental meditation yogi, rabbi (that’s for you nowheels) and church lady.

ramirez will be next, followed by valle. Suprised that ramirez has’nt received more attention. The scouting reports on his “stuff” compare favorably to trevor may’s and ramirez is at a higher level. The more i read on the new guys, the more i like them.

I went Ramirez. I like his velocity and size, to go along with good K/BB ratio in prior year.
I would like to see him start in Clearwater and move him up after some domination there.
I also like Bastardo and Mathieson, but they don’t sound like shoe-ins for the Phils bullpen this year – makes me think there are some questions about them. What is the knock on Mathieson (other than staying healthy)?

I went with Domingo Santana over Valle here.
I am just in disbelief that I am endorsing a 16-17 year old kid as top 5 or 6 in the organization. (voted for him last round)
I think this reflects well on the Phillies efforts to sign players.

santana again, if he is really only 16 not 26 then we may have another andruw jones (young version) or miggy cabrera. man would that look nice in the of with dom brown. young talented and cheap, just what every team wants. he could make us all forget about taylor, drabek, etc….. my next vote is ramirez, 3rd best pitching prospect in the system and i hope he can be our fergie jenkins we can talk about for a long time.

As much as we all love the idea of Santana, let’s be realistic. Even if he becomes the next Willie Mays or Hank Aaron, he’s not making the major leagues before, say, 2013 or so. In the meantime, let’s see what Dom Brown can do.

I’ll echo those who like Valle ahead of Santana, based on his 1.5 seasons versus Santana’s <0.5 season. If they both repeat last year's averages with full seasons then Santana would move ahead of Valle in my eyes, but that is a big IF. Bastardo still needs seasoning and to improve or gain confidence in his secondary pitches. I think he was called up prematurely to fill a need and is not yet major league ready, but if he can sustain a full minor league season (as Kendrick did) if he can do it without another injury I'd move him up, but that is two big IFs. As of today, Valle is the most valuable Phuture-Phil on the board.

I voted for Sebastian Valle. From my cursory glances over past GCL seasons, succeeding at a young age isn’t necessarily a sure indication of future success. I don’t think we know enough about Santana to accurately peg future stardom just yet.

I am very interested in what the host of this site thinks of Gillies and Ramirez, now that we have had some time to digest the trade.
I am very impressed with the Rube and ‘stones’ it took to request the 3 ‘upside’ prospects that he received in the lee trade. He could have easily requested Saunders and one of those 3rd basemen that were rated higher than Gillies and Ramirez by BA, just so it had the appearance of a great/better trade.

nowheels, there is NO desperate need for 1b, 2b, ss right now, i don’t understand why you and some others are so worried about those positions, we have control over those guys for the next 2-3 yrs. don’t forget about singleton at 1st base and i believe buschini is playing 2b, correct me if i’m wrong about him. i would be more worried about not having a few more primo sp’s at the higher levels. carpenter, savery, kendrick don’t count, i believe they are at their developmental peak. give these new guys as much attention and support as the guys we just traded. 43 posts and still no talk about the backup catcher position, i love it.

Problem with 3b is that there just haven’t been many quality prospects available at the position where the Phillies were drafting. Quality prospects at that position go very early in the draft..
Since 2005 when the Phillies took Costanzo in the 2nd round, there really haven’t been many good options. In 2006, they could have taken Chris Coghlan and Daniel Murphy who were listed at 3b but neither of them play 3b today.
In 2007 they tried Tyler Mach and he was a failure.
2008 they could have drafted Connor Gillaspie instead of Hewitt/Collier but the jury is still out on all of these players at this point.
So since 2005 they have drafted 2 3b in the top 4 rounds (3 if you count Hewitt). Problem is the the guys available for the position just weren’t very good.

Look around the league. 3b/ss/2b prospects are hard to find right now.

one final point on 3b. BBA has 7 3b listed in their top 100 prospects from 2009. Here is the list:
Alvarez – #2 overall pick
Moustakas – #2 overall pick (as a SS)
Gamel – 4th round in 2005 (Phillies took Costanzo in 2nd)
Wallace – #13 overall pick
Vitters – #3 overall pick
Dominguez – #12 overall pick
Lawrie – #16 overall pick
As you can see from the list, the only one of these players the Phillies COULD have drafted was Gamel in 2005 and his ability to stay at 3b defensively is in question…

“Mike77, I am confused. You are impressed that they didn’t get BETTER players…?”
Check your reading comprehesion. I did not say they that. They took players that were lower RATED in 2009 by BA. Because you were higher rated, does not mean you continue to be the better player/prospect.
You should no that. In 2009, Jason Donald was higher rated than Michael Taylor, JA Happ, Bastardo, Gose and Trevor May. Now, nobody cares one bit, that he was traded.
