  1. That seems like 3 to many. Are they going to juggle the roster slots or did some other teams give up slots? A jump back into big-time competition for Garcia. It will be very interesting to see how he does.

  2. a couple of the players (have to double check who) are “taxi squaders”, meaning they are only eligible certain days of the week.

Where can I see a copy of the schedule? I live in southern CA and would like to make the trip to see these guys if possible.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. disagree on Troy–his defense is solid–almost Galvis-like and he has a better bat. I believe he is only playing certain days in the AFL

  5. Troy,
Yes, Hanzawa is good enough defensively, but does he really have a better bat than Galvis? You have to consider age and level. Hanzawa is now 24 years old and just put up a .675 OPS at Lakewood. He had 24 walks to 100 Ks, playing against kids a lot younger than himself. Galvis won’t turn 20 for a few more days and put up a .587 OPS a level higher in CLW. I’ll go with Galvis as the guy who’s going to have the better bat.

  6. Although I won’t be at the first game of the season, I will be at the majority of games. Scottsdale Stadium is actually on my way home from work and real near to where I live. I’ll be on here giving updates whenever possible.

  7. The Mexican and Venezuelan Winter Leagues are just getting started. Some Phils minor leaguers of note are:

Mexico: Yaquis de Obregon: Michaal Taylor, Neil Sellers, BJ Rosenberg and John Mayberry was just added. Taylor is 3 for 8 and an RBI in 2 games. Rosenberg’s been in 1 game for 1 inning and hasn’t allowed a run.

Mexico: Tomateros de Culiacan: Mike Cervanek is on the roster. He’s 1 -10 with an RBI.

Venezuela: Aguiles de Zulia: Freddy Ballestas, Mauricio Romero, Harold Garcia and Fidel Hernandez are all on the roster. Garcia is the only one who has played. He’s 4 – 13 (.308), Dbl and 1 RBI.

  8. Thanks for the info Bellman!! Can’t they all just go to one league so it’s easier to keep an eye on them?? 🙂 Good to see Taylor back in action, though it really will be very interesting, wathcing the big club, where he and Brown end up. Obviously Ibanez is older and one of them can slide in there, but while I do love the prospects it’s awful hard to look and see one of them giving us more than Werth. Question is – as per usual, better to be playing every day in the minors or ridin the bench in the majors?

  9. Certainly Taylor needs some more AAA ball, and likely will go toLV to get that done…with Brown to Reading for a similar “brush up” before moving up to replace Taylor when HE moves up to MLB.

The interesting stuff is the 3 guys–relievers all–that are pitching in “winter” games: Rosenberg, Mathieson and Schimmer.

One and/or another is likely to join the big club sometime in ’10 thereby. Most likely, Mathieson first.

The Phils recognize their need to fill the reliever spots next year and following. Add back Romero plus Bastardo, too.

Durbin and Condrey should be invited to move on…along with Eyre and his elbow arm chips that might retire him.

Seems like Galvis is the only short-term possibility at SS. Replacing or resigning J-Roll won’t be easy. Hope he’ll stay; he’s young enough at 30.

Crying need: third base, of course.

  10. The team will not part with both Conrey and Durbin – they’ve been too valuable for too long to just discard. Expect at least one of those players to remain with the team.

Bastardo will end up in the pen, probably to start the year. Manuel has indicated that he will try to stretch Bastardo out and give him an opportunity as a long reliever and a starter. Manuel sees something in Bastardo, just as he sees something in Ben Francisco. Of all the things that Manuel has proven himself to be good at, one of his best skills is bringing a player along slowly and surely, making the player work hard to earn promotions while, at the same time, showing confidence in the player.

  11. Wish they had someone playing third in winter ball other than Mike Cervenak. Sellers popped one out last night but as a DH in the Mexican Pacific league. Harold Garcia is getting valuable playing time at second in the VWL. They even had Buschini at third in the final FIL game on Sat.

  12. Only got to see Saturday’s game with the Tigers but switch hitting SS Jonathan Villar seems to have the size and tools to be someone special someday. He drove a line drive double from the left side into the right center field gap for a double after coming in for the smaller Duran who was also impressive at short and at the bat with a double as well. Third baseman Buschini did line a base hit into the hole to left but fielding wise seemed a bit tenetive when he fielded a hopper for a force put out at third but held on to the ball rather than show off his arm for a 5-3 double play attempt. Valle was sharp throwing out a runner before being relieved by Mitchell behind the plate.

Pitching wise they gave an inning each to Martinez, Colvin, LeBron, Sanchez, Pettibone, Sampson, but only Diekman and Hyatt stood out. The lefty from Venezuela, Martinez was hit hard giving up a long homer to left to a righthanded hitter and a double to the gap in right to a lefthanded hitter. Diekman with his 3/4 arm delivery was overpowering in the eight with 2 K’s and Hyatt faced three lefthanded hitters in the 9th, struck out two of them and got the third to fly out to center. All on off speed pitches set up by his fast ball location, mostly down in the zone.

Missed Santana’s first at bat after he came in to play right replacing Castro. Went out to the bullpen to watch the pitching coach Price coach up Diekman on his new delivery. But in his second at bat Santana struck out swinging on a high off speed pitch. Wish I had a chance to see Bonilla from the Dominican League pitch. He served the bat boy for a couple of innings. He is a tall, lean, lanky, righty who at least looks the role of a future ace.

  13. Looks that way. They must be high on Cesar Hernandez who played second and was on base a couple of times with a hit and a walk.
