Some recent comments made by Reading pitching coach Steve Shrenk on the performance of a number of members of the Reading staff:
Mike Stutes — (on his last start) “He established his fastball a little better, he was down in the zone…the walks really hurt him. He is throwing his change up better like he was at the beginning of the year, still working on the breaking ball, trying to do too much at times but getting better”
Chance Chapman– “He is getting a little more confidant. He has had some success and with success comes confidence. He has been pitching with his fastball, his slider has gotten a little better and he is pounding down in the zone a little bit more. He is being aggressive and that is the big thing, When you are tentative, you get behind guys and they become better hitters. That is what had been happening but now he is making pitches and trusting his stuff a little bit more.”
Yohan Flande–“He has been doing ok. He still has those couple innings when things get a little fast for him and he needs to slow things down a little bit. He is throwing strikes, he is very aggressive, his tempo is great…he goes right after hitters. He goes after them with what he has, his fastball, change and slider. His change is a big pitch for him and when it is on, he has good games…It has been an adjustment early, but he will catch on. He is a good learner and a joy to have around. His competitiveness on the mound is fun and he wants to get better. His slider the last few bullpen sessions has been really good…He is very good defensively at his position. ”
Joe Savery–“He has earned an opportunity to start the EL All Star game. He has worked very hard this year, but that is coming from me and I am a little biased (as his pitching coach)”.

Flande got pulled after 2 innings tonight. Any ideas about why?

Probably due to the Futures Game…no idea other than that.
Flande doesn’t impress me at all. Savery has been a pleasant surprise so far.

Futures Game. That was the plan.

Thanks for passing this along, Gregg.
Easy on Flande, NEPP. I know he’s 23, but he was pitching in the GCL last year; it’s unrealistic to expect him to fully adjust to Double-A in just his fourth start. Let’s give him another 8 to 10 starts before drawing conclusions.
This has to be seen as a consolidation year for Stutes at this point. Still just 22, a 12th round pick double-jumped to Double-A to begin his first year, he’ll only be better from surviving the steep learning curve. Good on him for continuing to battle.
Oh, and I stubbornly refuse to give up on Chapman. Since the beginning of June (i.e. subtract his 6-game May adjustment period), he’s posted a 13:3 K:BB in 14 IP. I still think he has a chance to get to the majors at some point in a middle relief role.

What’s the deal with Drabek not being listed on Readings roster?

Drabek’s on the temporary inactive list, hopefully just for the futures game.

I don’t think Flande is really a good prospect. He’s about 1/2 of Bastardo. I think he’s all hype.

even though worley is in the futures game it would have been nice of schrenk to report on him. rickey b. any report.

Worley has really struggled lately. I wonder if he’s hit the wall, or if his start was just a fluke.
So much for him being “major league ready”

Any thoughts on giving Chapman more innings, or even a start?
