Considering his age and performance Flande needs to be moved up soon but I don’t see a spot for him.

How about Brummet. IMO he has no future as a starter and could get adjusted to the BP for the second have of the year.
LikeLike
I think Brummet is either a 5th starter or a long man so I think he needs to keep his arm stretched out.
FWIW, Carrasco’s FIP this year is around 3.50. Hopefully his luck will change and his ERA will rebound. I think we are all quietly counting on him for the rotation next year.

Carrasco always does well until someone in the field gives up an error and then he falls apart. He just can’t seem to handle bad luck.

if you go by the stats above it looks like 3 pitchers could be in the mix to bring up or deal. bastardo. worley, and drabek. actually 1 more cloyd. the most important stat in low minors has always been k to bb ratio and 4 – 1 is pretty much the minimum at a and aa. i.e. if you look at kendricks numbers he doesnt appear to be bad until you look at his k to bb. terrible. not the only thing but very important.

Maybe Savery has finally started to get his control under wraps.

Carrasco didn’t pitch too badly yesterday. Unfortunately, Jason Donald was awful with two errors and bad swings all day although he had two infield hits. Bastardo was very terrific in his start though.

Knapp’s success has really tapered off- seems like control issues coupled with a difficulty pitching out of the stretch.
Glad we didn’t promote him like so many people were clamoring for early on…. he’d be getting smoked in Clearwater.

it is painful to watch moyer. how much more time? check his stats they are absurdly bad.you cannot go into a series KNOWING you are going to lose.the phils HAVE to make a move if they want to win it all. moyer has had enough time.

John,
Okay, this time I mostly agree with you. But really Moyer wasn’t THAT bad tonight (and he was better in his previous start). Take away one pitch and his line would have looked pretty good. Even with that pitch, here is an interesting factoid for you: the Phils are 6-3 when their started allows precisely 4 runs. Not exactly a guarenteed loss.
Yeah, I think that they will end up replacing Moyer. But they didn’t panic 4 weeks ago (when you advocated big, immediate, changes in the starting rotation), and they are in first place. No need to rush things now – especially since there aren’t really any good options in the minors who are ready now. No, Worley isn’t ready, and has zero chance of being called up.
Most likely there will be a trade down the road (unless Moyer does get it together, which I agree he probablt won’t). But it won’t likely be for an ace (as much as I would like it to be), for salary reasons if nothing else. If they do bring someone up from the minors, it’s not going to be one of the very young guys that you want to see them bring up – it’ll be one of the guys in AAA (though all of them are problematic for one reason or another, which is one reason why Moyer is still starting).

I’d love Flande to be moved up and Brummett to go. Anywhere. I was never high on him, and it continuously seems like he puts up bad numbers.
I’m excited about the prospect of Chacin realizing the ability he had a few years back when he won 13 games for Toronto. Can never have too many good arms. With the last few years’ additions of Kris Benson, Rodrigo Lopez, and Chacin, one of them is going to come back to where they were before and make the FO look like geniuses. And if not, then it’s worth the flier.
And by the way, hooray for everyone realizing that a few starts in a season is not enough to call for someone’s promotion (or demotion for that matter). It was inevitable that Knapp and Stutes would come back to earth, just as it is probable that Moyer and Lidge will even out. Take a deep breath before clamoring for a change that is probably not necessary. It’s a long season.

I enjoy your statements. The problem is Lidge should get some garbage innings to straigten out, and Moyer was pitching against his best target(12-1) so it could be said if he
can’t beat Florida…. Also not Helms the vet hit the HR not a
young freeswinger. Lets see what Carpenter does his next start maybe he has seen the light likewise Chacin. If Happ and
Myers hold to what they have done lately and Romero gets back I would hold off on a trade and bring up someone who you commited to for dear life

Brummett’s peripherals aren’t terrible either. 7 HRs is high, but that’s not the kind of performance that should merit an end to his starting career.

I’ve been a bit of a Brummett cheerleader for the last 2 years (in the interest of full disclosure). I was disappointed by 2 starts he had prior to his last start. I pulled those two starts out and he has a 2.83 ERA. He hasn’t given up more than 3 runs (and only once with 3), if you remove those two starts. If his next start is a good one, I’d say he’s back on track. I don’t want Brummett to stand in the way of a big time prospect moving up but I wouldn’t switch Flande for Brummett quite yet.
ps. I like Flande a lot too. Until Savery’s last start, I was thinking Flande for Savery and put Joe’s bat back in the equation. But Savery has to get his BBs down.

Reading the Phillies web site is troublesome
Blanton:You feel like you make one bad pitch and suddenly you gave up five runs,” SAY WHAT!
and Uncleuncle: Manuel could have Lidge pitch in the sixth, seventh or eighth inning until he resolves his issues.
“That’s worse,” the skipper said. “What kind of message is that? That’s really worse. That’s what Houston used to do to him. They used to slide him into the sixth or seventh.”
Lidge is 0-2 with a 9.15 ERA and eight saves in 12 opps

So if I read Charlie right, Lidge is bigger than the team. I don’t know if it would help but maybe a non pressure seveth or eighth would help. Drabek I believe is there best pitching prospect right now and they just want to see him take it slow, especially coming off a injury.

Saw Flande pitch on Sunday afernoon in Tampa. Has a nice slider and ok velocity. Probably sits about 90. In the humidity he ran out of gas in the 4th inning after dominating the first three inning but was stretched to the 6th after which the Threshers bullpen blew a three run lead with Byrd who does not seem to have much of a future, Brauer who could not get out two lefties and Schwimer after pitching an inning the night before had nothing and was hit hard.
Interesting story on Correa including a little on his substance abuse problem and suspension last year.

Flande’s start of the season was certainly interesting, especially after a triple jump all the way from GCL. That being said, he was probably a little ahead of the hitters early on, most likely from pitching some in the offseason.
From the reports it seems he probably has marginal stuff to be a big league starter. He does seem to have a significant platoon split, so a bullpen job is probably his future.
No need to be that quick on promotions, however, even considering his age. The triple jump really was aggressive, so I would have no problem leaving him in Clearwater for most of the rest of the year. He will be an interesting decision for the 40-man roster after the season as well. Not a high end prospect, but maybe someone that could survive as the 3rd LH relief pitcher on a major league staff as soon as next year (like Escalona this year).

On Carasco, I watched him on Sunday and he was 89 – 93 all game with several 93s in the 6th inning. He only allowed a scratch run in the first and a solo homer in the 3rd. In the 6th, he had 2 outs and a man on 2nd or 3rd, and got a soft grounder which went right through Donald’s legs to allow an unearned run and end his day. I didn’t count but he threw many pitches between 91-93 but his strike outs mostly came on a knee buckling curve that he threw ahead in the count which had guys cursing on the way back to the bench. I also had a chance to ask a Durham Bulls player about Bastardo, who threw the night before, and he responded thart he was really good with serious ball movement. Separate topic: I heard Keith Laws on XM radio Sunday morning on a national baseball show respond to the question “who is a lower level prospect that we need to keep an eye out for” by saying “The best might be Kyle Drabek because he is really racking up the Ks and will be promoted soon and be in Philly by the end of 2010.”

I wanted to get your guys thoughts on these possible trade targets for the Phillies.
Roy Oswalt(my favorite)
Erik Bedard
Jared Washburn(least favorite)
Jason Marquis(close second to Washburn)
What do you think it would take to get Oswalt? Ken Rosenthal thinks they should try to move him to boast there farm system, something we have a lot of in the lower minors.
I think Washburn and Marquis are two more 4-5 starters. I’m up in the air about Bedard. I also think think Seattle will want too much for him.

no interest in Marquis. Bedard has a hamstring. Oswalt is ok but very expensive. I’ll try our own unless You can get Bedard on a salary dump

Throw-In – I’d be surprised if the Phils DFA’d Taschner since he still has options. They’ll probably just send him to the minors. They currently have openings on the 40-man if they wanted to add someone.

Oswalt is the only apparently available pitcher I’d trade mutiple prospects for. Bedard being a rental doesn’t make him particularly valuable to us, in terms of the future. Neither Washburn nor Marquis should merit even one of our top prospects. If the big club is going to spend money, it needs to be on a real upgrade. Donald, Marson, and Carrasco could each save us money next season. Currently, we have 3 #5s in the rotation, and we don’t need another.

The deal I’d be trying to put together is one for Matt Cain. You can control him through 2011. What it would take…who knows but I would consider any of our prospects at this point if they agree to take Blanton back to make a spot for him in the rotation. Most say the Giants are looking for major ready POP.
Marson for Oswalt…I’d do it. Ruiz is solid and we have catching prospects a plenty. Oswalt has a full no trade so who knows what he would want to waive it.
At the very least some creativity could land us a true 1A type starter.

Half the roster will be at least 75 mil next year and that is without Myers. Is Ruiz arb elgb? I big time pitcher may push it closer to 95 or 100 mil so…. young guys have to fit in somewhere unless the Phils want to go 150 mil

it has been a bit under discussed on the blog this morning but bastardo got the call. reading the report on phillies.com this morning was very interesting. he was referred to as a “power pitcher” with “lot of life in his fastball” and “got a nice breaking pitch”.
more than any prospect i can remember recently, the scouting reports have been all over the place on him over the past two years. i don’t know why it has been so difficult to get a real report on a guy with such good numbers. it seems that he has really slid under the radar to most of the services, but it will be fun to watch him and finally see for real.
