Mayberry vs Ozuna

John Mayberry, Jr. is not in tonights starting lineup, the first time this year he has not been in the lineup that I can recall.  Pablo Ozuna is in the lineup, as is Miguel Cairo, who will be playing third base.  As of late this afternoon, the Phillies had not yet announced a roster move and Mayberry was still in Allentown, at Coca Cola Park, but seems as if he may not be around long.

  1. with ozuna and cairo, you know what you are going to get…low batting average, will do the things necessary (like moving a runner), but no power. mayberry could run into a pitch and change a game. high risk and high reward. but i would like the phils to bring him up.

  3. I really don’t understand Mayberry how much better is he going to get a lv. He should be up seeing big league pitching, and helping the phillies get a read on him for the future, is he a fourth outfielder or just a triple a filler,

  4. Mikemike – I could see Mayberry being up fulltime sooner then later, but after this series I wouldn’t be shocked to see them go back to a four man bench considering the innings they are getting from the starters.

I think they consider it possible Mayberry could be more then a 4th OF or else it would have been him instead of Cairo from the start.

  5. I already posted this somewhere on site
Bringing in Ozuna combined with him having success would force their hand on Bruntlett so dont expect it.
Mayberry cant remain a virgin forever. Sometimes you get surprised. But please please please no Bruntlett starting or at DH.

  6. It’s time for Mayberry to become the 4th outfielder at the MLB level and that’s all he’s needed to be for Philly. Quit wasting his talent in the minors and give him some big league time.

  8. It needs to be Mayberry, doesn’t it? It makes sense from both ends…

For Junior: it’s not as if there’s a whole lot more he can do in Triple-A to prepare him for the majors; given that his likely upside is that of a 4th outfielder or platoon player anyway, it seems as if it’s time.

For the Phillies: they can’t continue to operate with only 4 outfielders, the 4th of whom (Stairs) isn’t exactly a versatile glove man. Ibanez and Victorino have started every game this year, and Werth has started all but 3. Victorino and Werth, especially, need the odd day off to stay fresh for the stretch run, so Mayberry can certainly help on that front as a once a week starter.

  9. Peavy for prospects – generally, I say do it. With Hamels, Peavy and that line-up – they can make several WS runs over the next two or three years. Peavy is simply superb, he’s still young, and he’s signed through 2013. If they overpay for him, I’m okay with that. I’d have no problem giving up, say, Drabek and Taylor for Peavy. I guess where I’d draw the line is if they want Drabek, Taylor and Brown – that’s too much. Alternatively, sometimes a team can get away with giving another team one premier prospect and bunch of other decent prospects.

    Very interesting.

  10. mike I wouldnt do it. I doubt if he would leave sunny Cafilorna
anyway. If I did want to trade Taylor or Brown one stays. Then you have the money thing. Its too early anyway. lets see Happ
then someone else. Peavy is 5-5 over the last four years against the East. Not that I wouldnt want him but I’d rather keep the farm or now Besides he is no Santana

  11. If Peavy would say yes, then they should do a trade equivalent to what the WhiteSox offered…they didn’t seem to be overpaying. We’d probably lose Carrasco, Taylor and 2 PTBNLs in such a deal. That’s not bad if you think about Drabek and Brown both having higher upsides than the big names lost.

  12. Quite frankly they need to call up Mayberry for all the reasons already stated, and also because it sets a bad standard. The guy has played great in AAA with an OPS around .900, if they bring up a career utility man (who’s struggling to have an ops over .700 in AAA) over him they’re pretty much saying no matter how well you are doing you’re not getting promoted.

B, players who are younger and still developing need constant at bats. You tell them we want you to continue to play every day and develop into the stud we think you are. We’re calling up this veteran now because we know he will get limited PT.

That being said, I was just playing devil’s advocate. I’m on the Mayberry train.

Nepp I think what the white sox offered and what I read is poreda who projects as a back of the rotation guy or relief pitcher, a 25 year relief pitcher and another current major league relief pitcher and a PTBNL[NOW I KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS] so what the hell is so great about that package, isn’t donald, carrasco, taylor better than that and if they have to give another pitcher worley or stutes.if they want relief pitchers schwimmer, berg, dubin, de fraus are availabel

  16. Since the call-up of a RH DH is to be short-term (back down after interleague play is over) the objections to interrupting Mayberry’s continuity don’t really apply – he’d start at least 3 games and probably more, as well as get some pinch-hitting shots.

    Like

  17. Carrasco is a higher prospect than Poreda so that’s why we could easily build a similar package around him. The key is not the prospects (we have that no issues) but getting Peavy to waive his no-trade clause (doubt it will happen). Guaranteeing his $22 million option for 2013 would go a long way to doing that but that’s a lot to ask.

  18. Yeah, he was pulled from the lineup before the game and isn’t even in the clubhouse…figure about a 90% he’s called up after tonight’s game in the Bronx so he can DH for the next couple games.

  19. NEPP agree expect with the money issue its 40 million for three years. that is almost as much as myers at 12 for three who the better option. Look I don’t think he comes here but at least try, and if guarantee the money does it then you do it. you will have some guys like happ at under a million. and carrasco or drabek cheap for a while so we can do a three year deal. plus I believe either vic or weth is replaced by brown or taylor in 2011 another cheaper player

  20. Drabek and Taylor have almost triple the potential that Poreda and Richards have. Now it was shot down, put lets just say for arguments sake that Gordan Beckham was the PTBN, that would make the deal totally different.

To be honest. I laughed out loud when I heard that trade. I thought for sure Beckham would be the PTBN, but when that was shot down I couldn’t believe it.

He was ranked higher, I don’t think you’d find that to be the case right now in a recount. Obviously, pointless to debat since he won’t accept a trade here, but I think you have to start Carrasco and Taylor or Brown, and add two lessers from there- maybe donald. At any rate, I think its clear that the Padres aren’t going to parlay Peavy into a major killing given the control he’s taken. They’ll be lucky not to get ‘schillinged’.

I don’t think Peavy is going anywhere. I wouldn’t mind him in the rotation but he’s set on not disrupting his family.

  26. The team has other infield prospects besides Donald, like Freddy Galvis. I think Donald would be the most sensible centerpiece. He’s blocked at SS and 2B, and the Padres have an immediate need.

Mayberry was the most sensible callup given that he’s already on the 40 man roster.

  29. Regarding Peavy, I’d love to have him and would be happy to pay a high proce fopr him, but I’m not sure why people think that the Phillies would be willing to take on his salary. I hope I’m wrong. Yes, the Phillies will be shedding some salary over the next couple of years, but will be paying more to some of the people they keep, Hamels for example, Werth if he stays (he shoiuld and probably will).

John, setting aside whether you are “right” in some abstract sense about Donald, your confidence that he “will” end up as the Phillies third baseman (as opposed to “should”) seems odd given that every indication is that the Phillies see him as a utility guy and see Feliz as the answer at least through 2010.

  30. oh larry, larry, larry. my opinion of donald is anything but abstract. it is based on based on empirical evidence garnered over his steller minor league career. the fact he has played flawless defence at lhv. the fact he was mvp of the u.s.a. olympic team, the fact he won the stinson award in the atizona fall league and the opinions of two no- nothings named tony gywnn and ryne sandberg. please tell by name what phillie sees him as a utility player. i know first hand of a guy named owens who as began to lose it and deemed sandberg and j. franco as utility guy,s. not the popes finest hour.

Sandberg I know they didn’t think was a everyday player, the question, donald isn’t better than utley, rollins or felix. so there does he play. Based on salary felix stays. And to answer the question Peavy won’t play for a east coast team others have said the same, and when the money is there they go. CC wanted to play for the angels, they lost texiria wanting for him and when the yankess offered that contract where did he go? Aj wanted to go to atlanta. but when the yankees showed him the money , he said I always wanted to be a yankee. bull it was the money

  33. John, that’s 90% non-responsive and 10% meaningless. I’m not going to keep arguing with you regarding whether Donald is IN FACT good enough to be a starting thrid baseman in the major leagues. I think the evidence is against you, but obviously my arguments haven’t convinced you.

Rather, my point was that the Phillies don’t see him that way. Your only response was “please tell by name what phillie sees him as a utility player.” Now, obviously major league organizations avoid saying explicitly that they see prospects as utility players – for obvious reasons. But there is a concept that you may have heard of called “circumstantial evidence.” The circumstantial evidence in this case coinsists mainly of useage patterns. If, indeed, the Phillies saw Donald as the third baseman of the future, then the only rational thing to do, given his relative inexperience at that position, would be to play them there full time at thrid. They aren’t doing that. ergo, either (a) they don’t see him as a full time third baseman, or (b) they are massively incompetant. I think option 1 makes more sense.

But they are giving him SOME playing time at thrid, and SOME playing time at second. What does that tell us? It suggests (at the very least) that they see him as a utility player – i.e., someone who can play a variety of positions as needed.

I’m not sure what relevance the Sandberg and Franco comments were supposed to prove. The fact that mistakes were made in the past (and the Franco situation was more co

  34. oops, hit the submit button prematuurely. To finish up:

The fact that mistakes were made in the past (and the Franco situation was more complicated; they didn’t see him as a utility player, they just (wrongly) thought that Hayes was a beter bet to be a star) (a) doesn’t mean that they are wrong about Donald, and, more to the point, (b) doesn’t mean that they won’t make a “mistake” with Donald if you are right about him.

  35. mikemike i responded but it didnt come up so i hope im not repeating myself. just kidding with the words but it helps to keep a dictionary close. as far as franco i cant go into his trade too many people embarresed. as far as the money i completely agree and with feliz, age and back theyll need a 3rd baseman next year. donald will never be a utility man. trust me hell either be at 3rd or traded.

  36. And as long as we comparing Sandberg and Donald, they did, interestingly, have similar seasons in AA – both at Reading, 28 years apart. Which would at first glance support John’s point. Except that Sandberg had his season at age 20, and Donald had his at age 23. Those three years make an ENORMOUS difference in terms of potential. In this case, the difference between a Hall of Famer and a a marginal regular/utility guy.

That’s without even discussing Donald’s extremely poor performance this year. I don’t put TOO much emphasis on that – small (but growing) sample size. But John’s rationalization for that – correct me if I’m wrong, but if I understand it it has something to do with disappointment about not making the majors – is (a) the worst kind of special pleading, and (b) an insult to the professionalism of Donald, ironic coming from someone like John who likes him so much.

  37. What position Donald is playing tells us very little. Keeping him at SS maximizes his value, and keeps his options open.

Also getting on him about his slow start is dumb, this happens to plenty of guys in AAA who bounce back. Give it time and see where his #’s are in a few months.

If they keep Mayberry they can ditch Bruntlett and bring up
Ozuna as a way to add firepower to compensate for the pitching.

  39. Not sure anyone touched on this; to add to the previous discussions on Mayberry v. Ozuna; was the Mayberry decision also about ML options? My understanding was that if they bring Ozuna then he has no options to send back down… as is true with Majewski and Koplove. I guess this is a question…

Re: Donald… I think there are a two different ways to look at the prospect; They’re value to the organization’s medium/long term needs and value in the trade market. If Donald percolates to CBP, he’s going to have to be a utility man to play; barring injury to others. Also the Phillies just don’t have many potential replacements for Feliz, then J-Roll as of today in the system. Trade partners might see him as a solution to a specific infield position… which is where his trade value comes in.

  40. With Brad Harman hitting .359 for May, the top defensive 2B in the EL, in his second season at AA and on the 40 man roster it seems he should be moved to AAA to team with Donald up the middle. He was the Australian WBC SS so the Phils have two good young middle infielders in the organization. But keeping Harman at Reading hitting a gland slam as he did last night proves little. Ozuna is just taking up a player developement spot.
