Clearwater Threshers Week 2 Report: (4/15-4/22)

Week one for the Threshers was all about the offense as they lead the league after four games with 26 runs, but week two for the team was all about the pitching. The team was 4-3 on the week, and still remains on top of the Florida Sate League Northern Division with a record of 7-4. Each of the four wins this week included a pitching gem from their starters. Kyle Drabek had two wins going 13.2 innings with 19 strikeouts to go with the 8 from his first outing to now lead the FSL with 27 Ks overall. Carlos Monasterios threw a complete game shut out in his first start of the season in a seven inning affair as part of a double header, while Yohan Flande threw 7.0 innings on Sunday to improve his record to 2-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA on the year.

Once again the Threshers did what they have done all year so far; score runs. The team picked up 8 runs on the afternoon while Kyle Drabek’s magnificent pitching effort held the Flying Tigers offense silent. Drabek struck out 9 in 7.0 innings while walking none and scattering a paltry 3 hits. It looks like this kid is for real!

8 of 9 Threshers starters had at least one hit with 6 of them picking up 2 hits. Matt Rizotti continues to lead the offense with 4 RBIs on the day and he raised his average to .600 on the season.

Kyle Drabek earned the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his outstanding pitching effort, and a major shout out goes to Matt Rizzotti who has been raking at the plate all year.

In the first game of the double header Carlos Monasterios picked up a win for the Threshers going the distance. He held the Flying Tigers to just three hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking just one in his first start of the young season. The Thresher offense was held quiet as the team picked up only one run in the game, but thanks to Carlos’ efforts that proved to be enough.

The offense has been hot for the team this season picking up at least 5 runs in every other game this year. It looked like it would be another big night for the team as they loaded the bases in the first inning with just one out, but they left all runners stranded, and things stayed quiet until with one out in the fourth inning Yonderman Rodriguez crushed a triple to the right-center gap, and then with two outs Arlon Quirozcrushed a double to score Y-Rod.

Carlos Monasterios earned the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his outstanding pitching effort.

Unfortunately in the nightcap the Threshers pitching could not match Monasterios’ effort from the first game, and the offense remained relatively quiet for the team as well. Chance Chapman got his first start of the year, but only lasted three innings giving up two runs on six hits with three Ks and no walks. He was relived by Chris Kissock who had two solid innings of middle relief giving up just one hit with three Ks and no walks in two innings of work, but then the Flying Tigers added four off of Joe Rocchio who went the final two innings with a line of four runs on five hits with one punched out and one walked.

The offense remained pretty comatose getting just one hit through the first six innings, but they did pick up a run in the third when Michael Durant got his first walk of the season, and the scored on the one hit, a Fidel Hernandez double.

The team tried to mount a late rally as they picked up two runs on four hits in the bottom of the final frame, but it proved too little too late.

Chirs Kissock earns the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his relief pitching effort.

Yonderman Rodriguez Rounds Third on his Home Run.

Unfortunately the photo above was but the lone highlight for the Threshers tonight as they fell to the Yankees 10-1.

The offense managed eight hits, and did load the bases in the third, but a defensive effort that included four errors along with pitching that allowed 10 runs was not worthy of much more comment.
Did I mention 4 errors?

Yonderman Rodriguz earnedthe SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his lone HR.

Michael Schwimer closed out the game with some nice pitching.

Julian Sampson got his second start of the year tonight, and looked more comfortable on the hill than in his first effort. Unfortunately with only one run’s worth of support he needed to be perfect, and he could not live up to that expectation.

Sampson went five innings giving up two runs on seven hist walking just one and fanning two. Chris Kissock had two innings of relief giving up on run on one hit with two Ks and no walks, and then Michael Schwimer had two nice innings of work to close things out. His line included no runs, no hits, four hitters punched out, and a walk.

Michael Schwimer earned the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for relief effort.

For the second time in a row, Yohan Flande threw an excellent game from the hill for the Threshers. While Kyle Drabek has stolen the show, Flande seems to want to establish himself in the ranks of Phillies elite minor league pitchers as well. Both he and Drabek wen’t 5.0 innings with wins in their first outings, and now each has gone 7.0 innings with a win in their second effort. Drabek has an edge in Ks, but so far it is a fun race.

The Threshers offense meanwhile was held silent until breaking a 0-0 tie just after the seventh inning stretch to go up 3-0, and then the bullpen got to within two outs of a shut out before Jared Simon surrendered a solo HR. Simon immediately got the next to batters to ground out to end the game though, so all was good, and the Threshers went home winners.

Yohan Flande earns the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his terrific work on the mound. That makes Yohan the first two-time winner this season.

Bam! I think this Drabek kid may be for real.

6.2 innings of work with 10 Ks! Wow!

Mike Zagurski got his second rehab start of the season picking up one strike out and giving up no hits or walks, but it was when Kyle Drabek took the mound that things looked brightest for the Threshers. Michael Schwimer pitched the final 1.1 frames to give the Threshers a shut out giving up a hit, a walk, and registering one strike out.

The Threshers offense first got on the board in the fourth inning when Fidel Hernandez singled, moved to second on a Freddy Galvis sac bunt, and then scored on a Dominic Brown RBI single.

They added a second run in the fifth on a couple of singles and an RBI from Derrick Mitchell, then sealed the deal with a 2-run 2-out home run from Matt Rizzotti in the sixth to go on to a 4-0 win.

Kyle Drabek earned the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his terrific work on the mound.

About Jeff Crupper

It depends on which blog you are reading, but now now you have either discovered that I am a huge baseball fan, or that I have a twisted sense of humor and like to rant about just about anything. Whichever it is I hope you enjoy your stay and spread the word.

  1. Rizzotti is showing some great signs of life this season. I like him, I had a chance to meet him very quickly one game when I asked him for an autograph. Seems like a very down to earth, funny, and easy going guy. He’s one of those people you meet and you hope succeeds.

The fact that he is off to a solid start makes me happy and think maybe he finally is settled in to the pro ball system. I think he can make a big impact in this Phillies organization. I hope is “underdog” like persona kicks in and truly becomes a standout like I think he is capable of!

  2. After yesterday’s performance, it’s time to move Drabek to Reading. I’m a little less inclined to fast-track Jason Knapp
because of his age, but if he continues to dominate like he has so far, Clearwater may be beckoning.

it might not be benefical to alternate long and short game
EG. Move Knapp up but limit him to five inning or a couple or three then go six back to five eventually seven and alternate
    5 7 5 7
Major and Minor league should do a real life study. Maybe marginal college grads or younger non prospects. It would cost money but save bigger
Fast track Knapp not exactly but some kind of plan is needed
drabek is just a matter of warm weather. Both need to compete no dominate

  4. I’m onboard. Drabek is dominating. If they move him to Reading then I think a starter in Reading has to move down. The early consensus was it should be Brummett but last night Brummett might have thrown a wrinkle in that. He went 7.2 inn., 5 H, 1 R and 5 Ks with no BBs. They’re not going to move Stutes or Worley down. I can’t see them moving Savery to Clearwater. Alex Concepcion is the only other guy to start at Reading.

  5. while it is not time to move knapp it is absolutely time to move drabek this kid has star written all over him i hope hes as good or better than his dad. if so and it appears that way our staff may have a new number 2 in 2010. besides it would be great to see him live at reading. hamels, myers, happ, carrasco and drabek.sounds good. went to the game last and it looks like hamels and manuels words, which i have completely agreed with are clearing the air. all thru the spring i said that park was pitching as if it were july to get a spot now it shows that all the other pitchers and players, except for happ, were going thru typical spring rituals thus allowing park to look great. happ as ive said all along belong in the rotation. my apoligies to ibanez hes a near great hitter who i didnt give nearly enough credit to although hes a butcher in the field.but a no contest upgrade over pat.

  6. John i agree with most of what you said except Myers 2010
i dont think he will resign and I am not sure why you would want him to(subject to change) He has been so-so and replaceable next year(easily 6 candidates).

    Bellman
what about moving up brummett Most who have moved up seem to do better under Huppert. With so much pitching you have to stretch your plans a little

  7. I reiterate that I’d still keep Drabek there for another month. Let him dominate and work on his pitches in a low stress environment and then promote him when its warm…say late may/early june. Make sure this is real and let him face an opponent a 2nd time and see what happens.

  8. No reason to move anyone from the Clearwater roster after 2 weeks. Let Drabek, Knapp, etc. continue to get there work in for the next couple of months and then worry about reshuffling the deck sometime around the June draft.

While Drabek certainly appears fully healthy, there is no reason to rush to give him a huge workload in the 09 season. He threw just over 60 innings last year not counting winterball. A jump to 100-120 would be more than enough.

  12. I agree that Brummett should be the first to move up from the Reading rotation– he’s way old for AA and seems to have put himself together so far this season… might turn into a reasonable middle reliever or 5th starter with some reps at AAA.

But I’m on the side of not rushing Drabek just yet– I vote mid-may so long as he’s still dominating.

  16. I am on board with the wait and see approach with Drabek. He is dominatiing right now but with no glaring holes in the rotation in Reading and no need to get him to AAA this year in prep for the ’10 rotation, keep in FLA for the time being.
Love to see our guys doing well at every level pitching wise. Let’s get the hitters going now (Brown, Taylor, D’Arnaud, Collier in particular).

  17. Completely unrelated and may have been mentioned in the Lakewood weekly report but I found this nugget on milb.com about Knapp’s performance yesterday…

“After getting lifted in the sixth frame in each of his first two starts, Knapp hurled a career-high seven innings Tuesday, throwing 97 pitches, just shy of his 100-pitch limit.”

Good to see that getting 14Ks didn’t result in more pitches thrown that allowed at this stage for him. That was my fear when hearing that he did strike out so many.

  18. Drabek is a monster and I think profiles as an Ace, and from a big club perspective, having two starters with an ERA in the 2-3 range is a recipe for a 100 win team. Obviously, while it looks good at this point, my fear is with injury. Much like Hamels prior to last year, the kids stuff is off the charts but it’s a wait and pray approach.

  19. ***Nepp warm yes, Low stress ok, but no one learns by dominating.***

I’d like to see what happens when he has to face a team the 2nd time around is all. Also, the jump to AA is the hardest to make so lets give him some time to get all his pitches in top shape before doing that. There’s no reason whatsoever to rush him that much (i.e. an April promotion) when we’ve got several guys above him that could be MLB ready in the next 12 months (Carrasco, Worley, Stutes all come to mind).

Drabek is probably our best prospect at this point.

  22. Gone by 2013? I doubt it, what it depends on is money, as uasual, but… not the money you think. It comes down to revenue for the phillies, which is directly proportional to sucess. If we all believe hamels is and will be an ace for the next 6-8 years, then you have to believe the phillies will make every attempt at signing him long term. A team with an ace, lots of fresh talent in the minors and has a strong offensive team is almost always sucessful long term.

    Like

  23. This isn’t Cole Hamels 2006, when it was just a question of establishing that the guy was healthy. Let Drabek sit in Clearwater for another month and get a taste of what it’s like both to be an ace and to face opponents a second or even third time. Remember that the jump from A to AA is the toughest in the minors; not that this kid seems to lack for confidence, but let’s see him enjoy a bit of sustained success before facing that challenge.

    Like

  24. When the weather gets warmer, move Drabek to reading. The phillies need to challege him with better competition, he is dominate in this league and doesn’t have a confidence problem, His father was a major leaguer and he knows the pitfalls. The phillies need to know if this kid will be near read next year, Myers is gone, Blanton might go and Moyer is a question mark. We need to see if this kid or carrasco can be a number two, or three, otherwise we will need to go out to get one , this team has a three year window,, until ryan, chase, rollins Hamels contracts are up.

  25. Upon further thought, Flande and Monasterios should be candidates to move up before Drabek. They have more to prove based on their age.

  26. What do you gain if you move up lesser prospect when you need pitching at the big league level. Do you think either one of those prospect has as much upside as Drabek. If he stays healthy he is our best prospect right now. health is the only concern

  28. You all need to relax, everyone clamouring about 3 starts is hardly productive! I’m excited about his start to the season, but 3 starts is 3 starts. He’ll probably move up in June when the draft fills the lower minors with new players…. they go through the same process every year! Dominating for a little while won’t hurt his development and the Phillies don’t need him right now…. and if they did he wouldn’t be productive at the major league level right now. So chill out and just enjoy the stellar pitching performances!

And the Mrs. Bourn joke wasn’t clever at all.

  30. Mike x2 – Of course Drabek is a better prospect but a lot of people want to see him in Philly in 2010. That’s just unrealistic for a kid of his age who hasn’t pitched above A ball.

It is realistic to be aggresive with guys who are old at their level and behind the curve a little to see if they’ve caught on how to pitch. These guys could still be useful players but the period of time they have to demonstrate that is exceedingly short. If they do get moved up it could be into the bullpen like Bastardo did, but that would be based on their talents and how they project. I know we are all frustrated with the big club’s pitching but that’s no reason to rush guys like Drabek and Knapp. It’s early in the season and I wouldn’t be surprised to see both of them go out and throw a clunker before the month is out. That’s just the nature of the beast.

  31. We all need to stay calm about Drabek although I agree he has star written all over him. However, Knapp looks just as good and I haven’t seen Stutes or Worley do anything not great yet either. Myers??? If the kids pitch this well all year, there’s no chance they’ll bring Myers back. What a wonderful problem to have about where to put Drabek and Knapp. If Drabek does this for five starts, they’ll move him up in early May. The same thing with Knapp. They want their pitchers to succeed but they also want them challenged and right now, neither is being challenged very much (luckily for all of us!).

  38. Mike x2 – I’m fine with being aggresive and Drabek does look special, but he is still coming off a major injury and is quite young. I don’t see what’s wrong with letting him stay at Clearwater for a couple of months to keep warm and get some repetitions in. They also need to be watchful on his innings pitched and build him up slowly on that. I think he needs AT LEAST one more year in the minors after this to get ready to handle the nearly 200 innings a ML starter might throw in a year.

    Like

  39. I agree Rodeo. Everybody is talking about being agressive with these guys (Drabek and Knapp in particular) but you have to watch the innings count and allow them to build up the arm strength to handle a full big-league season. No sense in rushing them up to the majors to see them throw one full spectacular season only to blow out the arm and never pitch again. History is littered with such stories.

It looks like my previous post didn’t go through, so I’m going to repost it:

I noticed that Overbeck hasn’t played in over a week. Is he hurt, not with the team, or has he been surpassed by Rodgriguez?

And as for Rodriguez, he hasn’t really been on my radar, but looks like he might be a player worth watching. He seems to have good plate discipline, and get hit for average but not power. Any reports on his fielding? Is he a legit prospect (22 in FSL is a bit old, but not that bad)?

  41. drabek 30 starts 6 innings = 180 innings, looks 25 starts 6innings = 150. looks about right. anything less than 150 if hes healthy is a bit too cautious. 1 start per week would be 20 for the year 6 or 7 innings 120 to 140 i dunno seems a bit too protective, maybe not. 120 to 140 will not get him to the show next year. i say 25 starts obviously if hes healthy, and well see him next year.

  49. @nowheels: probably becasuse knapp didn’t just come back from tommy john surgery. i’d bet if he was hurt or he was rehabbing an injury, then he would be at extended spring training.

  53. Thanks for the great site, Dave. I have been keeping abreast for the past year. This is my first post.

I have followed Mike Schwimer since Freshman year at Virginia and was thrilled when the Phillies drafted him last year. What a great photo you included in this report – a full length shot at 6’8″ barely fits on the monitor.

Can we get a report on his pitching speed, and a rundown on his stuff?

Also, what are the factors that lead a college or pro organization to pigeonhole a kid as a closer? Mike has been compared to Randy Johnson since his high school days, and while I know that kind of talk is ridiculously premature even today, still one wonders what kind of dominating beast he could become as a starter if he masters his off-speed stuff and keeps developing his control as he has over the past few years.

  54. I am starting to believe that galvis might turn out to be our best postion prospect, the reason is he seems to keep improving with little setbacks.

  55. The best part about Galvis is that he’s still very young and already at Clearwater. He just needs to keep up his steady progression and keep his excellent peripherals (very few SOs, etc)

  56. this post in last week’s hot sheet chat

    Q: Max from Florida asks:
What kind of numbers do you expect Dominic Brown to put up this year?

A: Kary Booher: We rated Brown the No. 1 Phillies prospect in the Handbook after he hit .291/.382/.417 with nine homers and 54 RBIs at low Class A Lakewood. But now he’s in the Florida State League, known more as a pitcher’s circuit thanks to the cavernous ballparks. Brown still needs to fill out, so the home runs may not necessarily be overwhelming. But watch his doubles and also keep an eye on his walks, which he did very well in last year. Here’s some food for thought as well: Two other lefthanded bats that have come through the FSL in recent years, the Cardinals’ Colby Rasmus and Daryl Jones, combined for only 11 homers in 500 at-bats.

  57. See that the Front Office named Freddy Galvis Player of the Week in the system. Freddy may be hitting a little more than last year but he also committed a throwing error last night for his 4th of the season after just 18 games. That is on a pace for about 30 errors for the season. Last year he committed 21 in 127 games at Lakewood. On the other hand Jimmy Rollins in 132 games in 08 committed just 7 errors. Galvis can make the great plays from time to time but if he is ever to become a major league SS in the future he must cut down on his errors first.

  59. I agree on the throwing errors but it should be noted that Errors can be a very misleading stat (especially in the minors). Galvis makes alot of errors simply because he gets to a ton of balls that most SS wouldn’t even touch. I’d like to see a breakdown of his errors from last year and so far this year to see how many are a product of that and how many are issues with his arm and accuracy.

Given his reputation of Ozzie Smith like defense, I’d be surprised if its mostly throwing errors.

Disclaimer: I am in no way stating that Galvis is a future HoFer or even close to the Wizard as a player…just using a superlative to make a point. Please do not attack me with posts because of that.

  60. Easy way to look at Galvis’ errors. Let’s take a look at the minor league records of some other reputable shortstops. In this case, the last several NL Gold Glove winners.

Jimmy Rollins: 29 errors in Clearwater
Omar Vizquel: 25 errors split between AA and AAA in one season
Cesar Izturis: 29 errors in Low A Hagerstown
Edgar Renteria: Separate seasons of 34 and 33 errors
Orlando Cabrera: 28 errors in a season, 20 of which occurred in High A.
Neifi Perez: 39 errors in High A.

There you have six solid to excellent defenders in this decade in the Majors. All of them committed 25+ errors in a season in the low minors. So 30 errors from Galvis would not concern me in the slightest.
