Clearwater Roster posted

From the official site

No real surprises. Overbeck and Galvis are here, Sampson and Schwimer as well. Mike Cisco, who people were asking about, is here but on the DL, as are Sam Walls and Walter Tejada. The infield looks like

1B: Durant/Rizzotti
2B: Yonderman Rodriguez
3B: Overbeck
SS: Galvis

  1. Overbeck at 3B again…well at least the LF will get lots of exercise.

Is Galvis really good on balls to his right? That might help.

  2. James, was that you over on Joe Sheehan’s top 10 comments section? If so, nice work.

  3. In ST Fidel Hernandez was at second with Freddy at SS. Showing a good glove Y. Rodriquez was at third with Overbeck . I would think with the “Crown Jewel” of the organization Drabek starting with Clearwater I would expect Rodriquez to see some time at third for defensive purposes and Overbeck DHing.

  5. Hey, I just looked on the “real” official site, and they still list Razor Shines as manager. Guess there’s is always somebody who doesn’t get the word. And the roster from http://www.milb.com is still in the offseason abortion mode. At this time all of the affiliate sites are up to date , with the exxception of the one owned by the Phillies. And every year that’s usually the way it goes.

  6. Not sure what is up with Byrd. If he IS cut, I find that fairly surprising. Another name that I’m not seeing is Will Savage. I know he spent all of 2008 recovering from surgery, but I saw him pitching in camp this year. He may be held back for more work, and is perhaps on Reading’s DL. (Reading I notice has no players listed on their DL.)

There is an inter squad game tonight Threshers vs GCL. I’ll try to find out about some of the “missing” players. It won’t be very exciting, but it will give me the chance to update some roster photos hopefully.

  7. I saw Byrd get absolutely torched by the Pirates in ST. Everything he threw got drilled…even the foul balls were hit hard. Might have been hiding a sore arm.

  8. Anybody know if Drabek will pitch Thursday…. I’m trying to decide if I want to go or not. I’ll end up going regardless but would love to see him pitch.

  9. Chacin pitched for the XST squad in the scrimmage tonight, and so did Mike Zagurski. Terry Tiffee played third, and Jeremy Slayden DH’d.

And to the other post, Yes I am relatively certain Drabek will pitch on Thursday. He was the only Threshers pitcher who was not dressed for the scrimmage tonight.

  10. Chacin was an invitee with the Nationals this spring, but didn’t stick. He must have just been signed by the Phillies. He played in our league with the Dunedin Bluejays in 2008 with a 1-7 recored and a 7.88 ERA. Opposing batters hit .367 against him. He had one good year with the big league Bluejays in 2005, but hasn’t done much since.

  11. Here’s a little something else I got from the official site last night. They list Javis Diaz as both a Switch-Hitter and Switch Thrower. He must be the best to watch. I had thought he was L-L. And they list Arlon Quiroz as a Right-Handed batter and Switch Thrower. Another guy to watch in the field.. He was listed as R-R last season, but a Switch-Hitter before. Glad to see the site has guys who are so meticulous in their work, and who care about what they are doing. Usually , the way things have gone, it will stay that way , at least, until the start of next season. Along with the “Razor Shines still managing” thing.

  12. I don’t want to sound retarded, but I have never heard of anyone being a switch thrower. Or let me correct that, I have HEARD of it, but never actually seen it in use. Besides possibly a pitcher, what could be the practical value of being a switch thrower?

  13. The Yankees drafted a guy last year who is ambidextrous. There was an amusing video of him pitching to a switch hitter where both of them kept switching it up. I guess the ump wasn’t sure how to rule on that.

I went to high school with a guy who was a lefthanded pitcher but a righthanded infielder. It was really bizarre – he was a natural lefty (he also threw a football and wrote lefthanded), but his Dad wanted him to be a righthanded baseball player so he could play the infield.

  14. there was a kid in the little league world series long ago
who threw with both hands. I think he had a cup of coffee
I cant remember his name but i will try as soon as i remember my name. BTW playing the first series up north was not that great an idea just looked it up the phils play in San Diego later. They are playing the dodgers now. Who does that make sense to????????

  15. I saw the kid in the Yankees system last year at the NY-Penn league All-Star game. Definitely a unique experience to see something like that in a game. You could tell he’s a natural righty, as everything from the left side was about 10-12 mph slower.

  16. Also, Greg Harris threw with both hands in a major league game about 15 years ago, so it isn’t unprecedented.
