Minor League rosters continue being filled out with pitcher Kyle Kendrick, catcher Lou Marson and infielder Brad Harmon all being optioned to minor league camp. Kendrick was extremely disappointing, unable to bring himself out of his late season funk, which is now leaning more towards our reality. He was 1-3 with an ERA over 9 in his 4 starts this spring. His WHIP has hovered right around 2. Expect to see him as a member of the ‘Pigs rotation in Lehigh Valley.
Harmon spent the majority of the Spring with the Australian team that participated in the World Baseball Classic and played well, before going 0-7 in his Spring Training at-bats with the Phils. Lou Marson will join the ‘Pigs as well as their everyday catcher after a Spring which saw him struggle from the plate, hitting .125 in 24 Spring at bats (including exhibitions).
has anyone seen Coste’s new book “more life after 30”

I guess that means that the phillies website will syop pretending that he is still in the race.

that’s where he should be. he still has potential to be an mlb (5th) starter, but he really needs to improve his consistency and you don’t do that in the bigs.

Kendrick could come back. I’m certainly not writing him off. Look at how bad Gavin Floyd was (and, please, don’t tell me he threw hard – he didn’t – I saw him in Scranton and here rarely broke 90) and he just signed a very big deal. He was cheated a year and a half of development when the team promoted him – I actually feel a little sorry for him, but he did get to pitch in the big leagues, so my sorrow is tempered.

Floyd had better stuff than Kendrick from day 1. I don’t like that comparison.

I heard hints that Floyd was uncoachable when he was here.
While that is certainly a flaw it is and or should I was fixable.
I have no idea how you fix Kendrick. He will soon be overtaken by higher ceiling guys

The Phillies need to be patient with him in AAA while he works on a slider and change up. He may get rocked early on, but he has one ML pitch. The Floyd comp is silly, he was a top 4 pick, had two plus pitches, he was just rushed and not really mentally tough when he was here.

You are probably right Pat I saw Floyd in a spring training game he got his fast ball by minor leaguers and not real batters. He could of used some Moyerization and time.

If I remember correctly, Floyd’s fastball clocked low to mid 90’s and his out-pitch was a 12-6 breaking ball… on top of an average changeup. He was comped heavily to Chris Carpenter both in stuff and in late-bloomerness….. so what do the phillies do? they rush him.
In ’03 and ’04 Floyd was one of the top pitching prospects in baseball….. Kyle Kendrick has never even seriously been on the prospect radar…. even after winning a few games as a rookie. The chances of him developing a slider and a changeup at this point are slim to nil.
About the only similarity between the two was that the phillies rushed them and that they’re righthanded.. So yea, in summation, that was a pretty awful comparison.

skunky I thought some of floyd problems were the coaching he got in the minors. The pitching coach and him didn’t get along maybe I am wrong like always? I now believe that Donald will never get a chance with the phillies, unless someone gets hurt and he is the only option. It seems to me they don’t hold much regards for him as a starting major league player.

Sorry one final point Foyd still is only had success for one season. We have seen a lot of those types. He gives up a lot of homeruns. I still want to see another good year before, I am convince he is a good starter.

Larry Anderson tried to get Floyd to change his grip and sacrifice a little speed on his fastball for movement. He was talking to a brick wall

Kendrick needs to develop a pitch to retire tough lefties. The minors is the right place to do this. If he is able to do so, he will be back.

Agree with Billy…He needs to figure out a way to get lefties out. Until he can do that, he doesn’t belong in the majors.

Donald just got sent down too.

Not a surprise on Donald or Marson…they’ll get plenty of reps at AAA.

Floyd was always more worried about going to the Aerosmith concert then doing what was best for the team.

I’m not too broken up about Donald being sent to AAA- his bat is there but he still needs to improve his repetior defensively and the roster of the defending world champions is not the place to do it.
I’m so impressed with how deep this team is all-around. It seems like usually the FO has difficult decisions to make because they need to fill the roster at several positions and have no one who’s stood out enough to win out for any other reason but by default. This season it seems like we just have too many good options to fit on the roster.

I am for trying kendrick as a reliever. let him add a few mph’s to his fastball and then he can just worry about developing one other pitch. let him take over to chad durbin’s spot in the pen in a couple years. i love the comp between the 2

Once other teams are able to pick up on Kendrick’s mechanics and movement on his pitches, he becomes extremely hittable. Maybe if he is able to develop another solid pitch you could try him in the pen but at this point I don’t even think he is ready for the major leagues.

I don’t think the comparison between kendrick and durbin is fitting. Durbin throws with a lot of 2seam rotation which moves into righties hands and away from lefties. When Durbin struggled during this past year, the reason was he was throwing from too much over the top. That is exactly the way Kendrick always throws.

floyd is a younger bronson arroyo load your lineup with lefties and tee off. he destroys the assertion that you add a run to any pitcher in the national league. kendrick while at one time is owed a great thank you will not be back. btw college bb games are being aired on cn 8.
