Projecting the squads; Reading

Same deal as the Lehigh Valley post. We’re going to focus mainly on legit prospects and fringe guys and not worry about the career minor leaguers or org guys. We included Marson, Donald, Slayden, Mayberry, Carrasco, Kendrick, Carpenter, Overholt, Zagurski, and Mathieson at AAA, so we won’t use those guys here, obviously. I’m not going to predict that Stutes or Worley will start in Reading, simply because you rarely see guys skip straight to AA in their first full season. It could happen, but I’m not banking on it.

  1. Is Clay Harris still around? If he is, you would think he’d be ticketed for Reading. Adrian Cardenas would sure like nice here at 2nd or 3rd, but a World Series trophy looks nicer (thank you, Joe Blanton).

  2. Monasterios in there somewhere as well as Kyle Drabek when it gets warm. Blah until D. Brown, Drabek, Stutes and Worley get there. Taylor, Savery and Garcia are really the only guys I’m going to keep tabs on.

  3. When the year starts, this looks to be a fairly weak Reading team. AAA will be better and more entertaining. Of course, Kyle Drabek could change that in a hurry.

  4. I hope to see Taylor here but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him a Clearwater for a month or so first.

That’s not an indication of my opinion on him, rather my prediction based on organizational philosophy.

  5. I think you’ve pretty much nailed it, James. A few more borderline guys to possibly add to the bullpen are Sam Walls, Dan Brauer, and Matt German; I think all are likely to start in Reading.

On the other hand, you have to think Monasterios and Darren Byrd will start in Clearwater as long as there’s room. Neither did enough to distinguish himself for a promotion to Reading (though Monasterios, at 23, could get bumped if there does turn out to be a numbers crunch in Clearwater).

Catch 22: Murray mentioned in a comment on one of the other threads that Clay Harris must have been released. I guess it’s not the worst thing in the world — if one of Rizzotti/Durant distinguishes himself in the first half at Clearwater, there’s no one blocking his path for a midseason promotion.

  6. C-Gosewisch/Orlando Guevara as his backup
1b-Harris if he is still there
    2b-Antoniato
    SS-Harman
    3b-Carlos Leon
    OF-Milner, Berry, Slayden?, Spidale?, Moran?
SP: Brummett, Carpenter?, Savery, Bastardo, Drabek when healthy, Byrd
RP: Cruse, German, Escalona, Overholt?, Walls, Pfinsgraff,
    Those are my predictions

  7. Starter Darren Byrd had a rough outing against the A+ level Pirates today on Ashburn. Gave up a two run homer in the first and a hard hit double in the second from what I saw. On the other hand off injured Rob Roth was impressive and kept my attention in his start on the Schmidt Field. He was throwing hard, locating his fast ball and had a good breaking ball in his three shut out innings against the low A Pirates.

The hitting star on Schmidt was Alan Scheonberger who had three consecutive line drive singles, one from the left side and two from the right. Anthony Gose looked like a lefthanded version of Greg Golson showing great speed in centerfield and on the bases, running a double into a triple. Then he beat out a broken bat single and stole a base.

The “who is this guy” today was lefthanded hitting catcher Brandon Akaskian on Schmidt who hit a line drive double to right and cut down a base stealer at second.

Of all the pitchers I saw today, Byrd and Diekman on Ashburn and Roth, Arroyo, and Noles on Schmidt, Roth appeared to be the only one able to hit 90 with a fastball. With the stuff Roth showed today all he needs to do is stay healthy to become a prospect.

  9. Jeff, what’s the story Harris? He did pretty good last year. Sorry, I’m not getting down this year. Was just thinking about that great ice cream you have. Maybe some time this summer.

  11. Naughton will be catching in AA. I’m thinking Fidel Hernandez at SS. I have Urick at 1B. I had Spidale in LF. I guess these two aren’t prospects. Jesus Villegas Andino might be on the roster too. For pitchers I had (alphabetically): Tyson Brummett, Andrew Cruse, Edgar Garcia, Matt German, Chris Kissock, Ben Pfinsgraff, William Savage, Joe Savery, Alex Concepcion and Sam Walls. I agree that either Carpenter or Bastardo start here and the other is up in LHV. I think Escalona will be in AAA. They’re looking to push a lefthanded reliever. Sergio looks to be the guy. They double jumped him last year to AA.

I think I’d start Drabek in A+ and move him to AA “when” he’s had a few strong starts.

Great to see Al Schoenberger perform well in the Minors Camp

That’s got to be the ultimate backhanded compliment I’ve ever heard…LOL.

  14. We’re told that Harris retired. If so, that’s a shame – he appeared to be on the verge of a potential break-out season. But not everyone wants to become Chris Coste or Andy Tracy (not that there’s anything wrong with that) – it’s got to be a hard life once you hit your late 20s because, truthfully, you’re probably missing an opportunity to establish yourself in some other walk of life. Of course, you’ll become the great Grandpa in the world when you’re able to tell the “you know, I used to play minor league baseball with Cole Hamels” stories.

  15. I actually thought that Harris had a chance to make the show. He had some versitility, could hit. I guess if you’re not willing to pay the price, it’s better to move on. I remenber talking to Jerrod Freeman when he was at Lakewood. He really seemed focused, determined. The following spring he’s a no show. One can never tell.

i think that he meant it as a positive. but either way, golson is hitting .348 this spring with half of his hits for extra bases. it is only 23 at bats, and it is spring, but it is a good showing for him since he played all year last year at AA. i am still bullish on golson.

  19. Urick will definitely be at first in reading. He’s hitting the ball very well including a double off Lidge on Sat when I was there. Its funny that the catcher Brandon Akaskian was mentioned. He was the one guy that I saw who I said “who is he” because he’s big and he was pounding the ball. Does anyone think that Bastardo will go to the bullpen right now? Remember what they did last year with another lefty we all liked. The Phils like Bastardo (Dubee worked with him personally one day I was there and that is very rare) but if you notice, he’s not starting and pitching only one inning at a time. If I had to guess, I’ll bet he goes to the Pigs but to pitch relief. Harman will be at Reading (with Fidel) because he didn’t earn a promotion and because they have lots of AAAA guys to work in already around Donald. Since last year’s Clearwater team was so weak, I think we’ll either see guys bumped up early like Dom Brown and Overbeck or we’re going to see many career minor leaguers at Reading for at least the first half.

  21. Gose amazed me with his base running and as a lefthanded hitter his speed should even benefit him more than Golson can ever use his speed from the right side. Yesterday Gose stole a base, beat out an infield grounder to first and went from home to third on a line drive to left with the speed that I saw only Golson equal last year at Reading. Gose’s legs were moving so fast and effortlessly that it looked like his feet barely touched the ground. Much like going to a game earlier in the week if for no other reason than to watch Freddy Galvis play SS, it was worth going to Thursday’s game just to watch Gose run the bases.

His delivery and stuff look like John Smoltz in his prime.

  26. he’s supposed to be able to stay inbetween 96 and 100 with his fastball for an entire game, with an above average curve, and above average change, and a low-90s slider that looks like lidge’s only about 7-10 mph faster.

  28. I heard the Marson for Buchholz rumor as well. It’s not the craziest thing I ever heard and could be a great deal for both teams. I would think other players might be involved (like Jeff Jenkins), but it could work for the Phillies. They get a potential, but young, future right-handed ace. They can use Ruiz for a few more years until D’Arnaud is ready. If they can do that deal or something close to it, they should work hard to make it happen. It would, however, force the team to do something with the extra starter – perhaps Happ and Park go to the bullpen for the short term.

Very intriguing and, from Boston’s standpoint, it makes sense because Veritek is almost at the end of the line.

  30. Phuturephillies in your opinion do you think teams will tank games late to get a shot at this kid Strasberg.Like when san antonio did it to get Duncan and same with le bron and cleveland. wonder if they could trade picks what a prospect like this kid would bring.

  31. First, there’s no way Boston will trade us Buchholz for Marson.

Also, Strasburg will be drafted this June, so no one has any incentive to tank games this summer, since the Nats have the first shot at him.

Do I have to add anyone else to the Reading squad? If not, we’re moving on.

  32. Sorry forgot draft is in june and set, so if I am correct marston isn’t enough to land a buchholz? The reason I ask is I really don’t know the upside of this kid buchholz. Never saw him pitch or heard much talk about him. I wonder if my favorite prospect swimmer gets to reading this year.

hmmm, Buchholz has been one of the best pitching prospects in the game. Unless they’ve soured on him this spring, they wouldn’t trade him for Saltalamachia, so they wouldn’t trade him for Marson either.
