John Mayberry Jr’s setup at the plate, and his profile, reminds me a bit of Mike Cameron with a bit less speed. Am I off base there?

Mike Cameron.

Modest OB%, good power, decent speed. In his career, Cameron has hit lefties much better than righties, the same thing I’m expecting out of Mayberry.

  1. Great point, Mayberry looks to be a valuable guy at this point, especially if someone gets hurt. He smoked that ball in the 1st inning today.

  2. Cameron when he was 24 years old put up a .356 OBP in the National League. The season before in AA Birmingham, Cameron had hit .300/.392/.600 with 34 doubles, 28 home runs and 39 stolen bases. Mayberry’s highest OBP was .358 in the Midwest League. Cameron’s OBPs have been modest. Mayberry’s have been in the toilet.

    But assuming Mayberry somehow matches Cameron’s production, Cameron is a gold glove center fielder. Mayberry is a corner outfielder. Cameron’s career 106 OPS+ would result in a below average hitter in a corner outfield slot.

  3. I wasn’t comparing them in terms of where the were at similar ages, I’m comparing Mayberry to Cameron based on his build and his swing. And the fact that he might be better against lefties than righties in his career like Cameron. Both are good athletes, Cameron has more speed.

    As for the topic… Mayberry’s impressed so far in the spring. I’d like to see him start in Triple-A so he gets regular ABs, but it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if the Phils dealt either Jenkins or Stairs and kept Mayberry on the 25-man as the resident LHP-mashing outfielder.

  8. Well cutting Eaton cleamed up one of Gillick’s million dollar mistakes. Why not trade or cut Jenkins and finish the job.
    That means we will have lost 3 of the most useless players in history from last years roster. That should translate into a couple of games at least

  9. Mayberry looks kinda awkward at the plate and in the field, but he got the job done at the dish and showed decent plate discipline. Kinda the opposite of Golson. Saw Donald make a couple nice plays, but his arm looked kinda weak on a ball that ate him up.

  10. Naylor good solid…he came up with a couple of big Ks when he needed to.

    Mayberry has impressed so far…considering I wasn’t expecting anything from him whatsoever.

    The biggest issue on that ball for Donald was that he didn’t charge it…that’s something experience will fix. Next time, I bet he charges the ball and makes the throw.

  11. Don’t see much of a resemblance; Mayberry Jr is of course a much bigger man at 6′ 6″ 230 lbs. If you wanted a comp build-wise, Dave Winfield ?

  13. I thought Mayberry was a good sleeper pickup. If we stop thinking of him as a number one pick that needs to be a star, I might be happy with a cheap RH outfield platoon bat for a few years. Let him play in AAA for a couple of months and call him up once either Stairs or Jenkins is hurt or dealt. He is just about ready to play now as a platoon bat. He can learn to hit RHP better in winter ball if development is a concern.

  14. Mayberry is really big — 6’6″, 230. Cameron is normal size — 6’1; 170. Cameron was a really fast and excellent CFer. Mayberry is a corner OFer who moves pretty well for a big guy but he isn’t a blazer. Probably not outstanding defensively — maybe not even good. He does have a nice arm.

    Cameron was really good at getting on base and he had decent power. His OBP was often around 100 points above his batting average. He had a fairly normal platoon split (.851 vs. .767) as opposed to Mayberry who has crushed lefties but not hit righties so good. Mayberry really doesn’t walk a ton. Cameron stuck out a lot compared to Mayberry as well.

    I don’t think it’s a very good comp.

  15. I thought Naylor looked really good. He pitched before the heavy subs came in and didn’t looked over matched. Fastball was ok, but the curve was very impressive.

    Unfortunately I somehow missed most of the plays Donald made.

  17. I.E. he came to camp fat and out of shape…exactly what you would expect after signing a 2 year deal, right?

    The injury probably stems from the same general fitness issues…he hurt himself lunging for a pitch during batting practice.

  19. I’m with you on that Nowheels – As soon as I read a few days ago that Werth wasn’t ready yet, I was waiting for the injury announcement. The Phils PR machine rolls on….

    But hey, it’s a chance for some a younger guy like Mayberry to get some extra at-bats and maybe win a shot so we can actually have a righthanded bat on the bench

  20. All of wish we could have his talent . This isnt the old days there is equipment everywhere if you choose to use it
    I cant understand even a tiny bit .
    Ruben can send a message with a fast trade (to the royals would be nice)

  21. Their hands are tied with Werth. If he came in out od shape, they have every right to hold him out and take a hardline stance. I also think that is the best way to get him better this year. Actions (and inactions) have consequences. He has zero excuse.

  23. I think there’s some overreaction on the Werth issue. He’s hardly the first player to come to camp a little bit out of shape. Now if he sucks all year because of it…yeah, then I’d be pissed.

  24. You maybe right Nepp but where is the competive fire that the Phils run on. If he had not just signed a new contract I might feel differently. He is not a kid or a tired vet. This reminds me of Vaugh Hayes “sign a contract,buy a boat and to hell with it”.
    The negative reaction of the team speak volumes
