  1. I think michael taylor only having 15 at bats . In a beautiful place like hawaii, It’s not enough to judge him.

  2. This is me tryin to pull the Hawaii discussion from the other post up here to the shorter commentary: Brown may not be playing because he’s still rehabbing the shoulder injury he suffered in the last month of the Lakewood season.

  3. Not sure that just because he’s on a roster (maybe not updated exactly), that they sent him or that he’s wasting a spot. Anyone know if he’s actually there? If he’s still re-habbing, he’ll be seen in Clearwater. Where’s Greg?

  4. Mesa Solar Sox now lists Patrick Overholt instead of Joe Bisenius on its AFL roster. Marson should stay with the Phils catching bullpens for the NLCS rather than report for the AFL opener tomorrow. Will help him for next year when he should be given a shot in ST to be the Phils every day catcher. Hard to take Ruiz .219 season avg. and 1 for 14 so far in post season. But if they win it all Ruiz will be back and Marson at AAA next year.

  5. I think Marson makes the team next year out of Spring Training but I think its Coste that gets sent down to AAA. Look at the numbers after the all star break and you will see Ruiz has actually been pretty good. I think a Marson and Ruiz split would be pretty solid for the phils and Marson could learn a lot about defense from playing behind Ruiz

  6. I think it’s true that Ruiz will stay in the big leagues and Marson will challenge. They are going to break Marson in slowly and, unfortunately, Coste is, again, likely the odd man out.

But do they know that they have some serious issues with the catching position at the major league level? Of course they do. I don’t care how good he is defensively – .219 is putrid (particularly when Feliz is also not carrying his weight offensively) and, at the very least, they need to create some competition there.

  7. Ruiz plays good defense so he’ll probably stay to platoon with Marson. They need that Safety net there, It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Coste.

  8. Also Taylor was back in the line up today after a few days off.

3-4, 2 Runs, RBI, Double, Steal

So hopefully he’s got his stroke back.

  9. It isnt just that Ruiz cant hit > He plays dump baseball.
After swing at pitchs in the dirt he took a called third strike
with second and third and the pitcher coming up. Cheese he cant even handle batting eighth.
    MT off and running ?????

  10. gotta love philly fans…judging a guy after 15 ABs is silly.
    1. it is not enough of a sample size to judge anything
    2. you never know how hard he hit his outs. maybe there were several line drives that didn’t drop. give him some time.

also, keep in mind that this is a developmental league, so he may be working on some things and trying new things.

  11. I don’t think much, if any of the conversation above is judgmental of taylor…all I see is more of the catcher debate 🙂

But would you really care at that point? They could implode the stadium and I’d still be happy for at least 5 years if they bring home a WS trophy in a few weeks.

I’m guessing a Ruiz/Marson platoon next season with Coste in AAA or retired.

  13. NEPP: I agree. If the Phils win a World Series, they get at least a five year grace period in my book. And they seem to be in a nice kind of groove right now – without any real contribution from the Big Fella. Anyway, on to Hawaii:

It was nice to see Taylor have a big day, but I’m not worried about his “slump” in the least. For one, the high amount of walks, in my opinion, mean one of two things: Maybe his goal is to work on plate recognition, and he is actively trying to work counts and draw walks; or maybe the plate discipline is already there, he realizes he isn’t swinging the bat well, and he has decided that he’ll get on base by whatever means necessary. My guess is that maybe it’s the former. Either way, I’m not worried about him in the least.

  14. I’d say it’s pretty unanimous. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him as a September call-up to the Phils, and I think most people here would agree with that as well (assuming he continues to perform the way he did in 2008)

  15. Look, I don’t see the team re-signing Burrell (unless it’s a relatively cheap 2-year deal). If they don’t sign Burrell and Taylor rips up AA, I would expect to see him in Philly by the early summer. Otherwise, he might be up right before the roster deadline in August. Honestly, I expect Taylor to become an important part of the team in the near future. How many six-five two-hundred and fifty pound guys are there with his skill set? It seems like he has a chance to be special and I’m sure the Phillies know this.

  16. Phils should keep Coste. He has been a good luck charm for them reaching the playoffs. Marson starts in triple A. Jaramillo???

  17. Dan,
At the very least Taylor starts at Reading next year. No reason to leave him in a league were he clearly was dominant when you could advance him to an age appropriate league.

  18. It’s early, but Taylor’s done a nice job so far in the HWL. To all those worried about his stats after 15 ABs: his BABIP was .154 coming into yesterday. Now that it’s back up to .294, his BA is up to .263, and it’ll only continue to rise as he gets comfortable. And the walks are probably the best sign going forward, at least in my opinion.

And Ryan: that’s exactly what I was thinking regarding Brown. He’s got to enjoy rehabbing in Hawaii, and it’s a just reward for a kid who did so well over the past two years.

  19. I hope the Phils keep Coste long enough for him to qualify for his pension. He certainly deserves at least that much.

  20. This from last nights HWB recap:
Fellow Stanford product Michael Taylor (Phillies) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, including a RBI single in the seventh, for Honolulu (5-2) in his return to the starting lineup (sore leg).

That explains the 3 days off!

  21. The Phillies need a RH bench bat; and a guy who can play multiple positions.

That will be Coste’s role to lose next year in Spring Training. He can play C, 3B, and 1B. And he’s got some power. He was his most productive when he wasn’t playing everyday. Keep that in mind.

    Marson/Ruiz behind-the-plate is a great combo.

  22. Forget Ruiz the deep hole of philadelphia. It isnt that he doesnt hit . He cant bunt, he swing at pitchs in the dirt. he doesnt walk enough . Therefore he cant hit eight for me but the Phils have low standard for guys they like

  23. I guess with a name like mine, I won’t ever get any respect. I told you Brown wasn’t in Hawaii, or at least I didn’t think so. Isn’t anyone in Clearwater that can give us a report?

  24. Jaramillo can hit RH pitching and is a good defensive catcher. Why are we forgetting him? We need to use one of our catching assets to fill other holes.

  25. Nobody is forgetting Jaramillo, phillychuck. The bottom line is that the organization has decided that Marson is now ahead of Jaramillo on the depth chart and thus that makes Jaramillo (who is turning 26 I believe) a borderline prospect. He’s basically tradebait this winter and barring that he’s flirting dangerously with becoming purely an organizational guy. The sad thing is that he could help alot of teams out as a solid MLB backup. He switch hits, plays above average defense and is solid behind the plate. The problem is he’s not quite as good as Ruiz (who is a team favorite and loved by the pitching staff), doesn’t have as much upside as Marson (who could be a potential AS if everything clicks) and doesn’t have a book deal (Coste). Personally I don’t see Coste back but there’s an outside shot he comes back as a Utility RH bat off the bench. The problem is that between Marson and Donald, Coste looks to be getting squeezed out. I am almost certain he could catch on with another team though…there’s always room for a backup like Coste (Unless you have a prospect like Marson hanging out).

My humble opinion is that Jaramillo will be part of a trade in the off-season and/or packaged with someone else to fill a need (possibly LF, possibly a bullpen piece, etc). His trade value isn’t gonna get any higher than it is right now.

  26. Or if they had nerve Jaramillo,Marson and Coste but that would never happen. In the postseason Ruiz proved to me and soon to others that he doesnt belong in the majors.

  27. The only problem with kicking Ruiz to the curb and going with Jaramillo is that Ruiz is better offensively than Jaramillo is. Ruiz had more power and hit for better average at every one of his minor league stops than Jaramillo. The pitchers also like throwing to Ruiz, which is something that you cannot discount. If a pitcher is uncomfortable with whom they are thowing to things aren’t going to go well.
