Keith Law’s Top 60 for the 2009 Draft

Hey, its never too early to start talking about the 2009 draft, right? Law’s prelim Top 60, which I’m sure will change quite a bit over the next 10 months, features Phillies draft pick Kyle Gibson at #4. Kind of wish we’ed signed him. But anyway, you can check out the list here.

  1. Ahh, forgot he’s behind the wall.

    Here’s a teaser for the Top 10

    1. Stephen Strasburg RHP San Diego State
    2. Grant Green SS Univ. of Southern California
    3. Alex White RHP Univ. of North Carolina
    4. Kyle Gibson RHP Univ. of Missouri
    5. Dustin Ackley CF/1B Univ. of North Carolina
    6. Aaron Crow RHP Fort Worth Cats
    7. Andy Oliver LHP Oklahoma State
    8. Matt Davidson 3B Yucaipa H.S., Yucaipa, Calif.
    9. Donovan Tate CF Cartersville H.S., Cartersville, Ga.
    10. Robbie Shields SS Florida Southern

Up the middle prospects are very thin this year. Lots of interesting pitching. And of course the prep landscape is volatile and will be up through next spring.

  3. Thanks. What I Like to see is if any of them are the lower rounds who didn’t sign. If you remember we had a lot of feed back from people saying how many of the later rounds made it to the majors. I still believe you can get great value with late round hard to signs.

  4. Early prediction: Donovan Tate struggles a bit with the bat his senior year, falls a bit on everyone’s draft board, then gets snapped up by an eager Phillies brass at Pick #22 or so.

    You heard it here first. ;

  5. Section113 It’s hard for me to believe that this kid won’t sign over a couple hundred thousand dollars. He is being offered six million. He is unproven player the only thing That I come up with is that he doesn’t want to play for pirates.

  6. roccom- But it is a possibility. I agree with you the Alverez will probably be a Pirate BUT has Boras ever ditched a multi year deal in favor of a low 1 yr deal…say Independent leagues in hopes of securing an even larger deal the following year?

Plus if MLB truly wanted to stick it to Boras they could right here with 2 of his players.

  7. section113– Luke Hochevar? Not exactly the same but he reneged on the Dodgers deal for Independent Ball for a year.

  8. Just wondering if this kid goes to the independent League for a year. Does boras insure him for six million against injury,Does he give him the difference between what he could get now and what he is offered next year. If teams won’t give him six million then what?

  9. Anyone that thinks Keith Law is biased, just read his recent post on his ESPN blog about YANKEES and RED SOX prospects. The guy is the same with everyone. GO BIRDS!!!!!!!!

  10. Full list is now coming in fine.

The Cooper Riley thing should be Riley Cooper. He has been on TV quite a bit this year. In the SEC championship game he caught 2 TouchDown passes from Tim Tebow. Could be in a haircut band.

That Cohl Walla sounds like a winner.
