Quintin Berry is “the greatest of all time” in stolen bases at Clearwater. He stole two bases tonight to put his season total at 42 to break the previous record of 40 set by Reggie Taylor in 1997. Congratulations “Q” you ARE the greatest! In addition to that he extended his consecutive games hitting streak to 25 games.
Congratulations also to Michael Taylor who was 4-5 on the night to bring his average to .312 as a Thresher. Michael is 12-18 in his last 4 games with 7 doubles and six runs scored.

Kudos also to “Q” for the sense of humor to sign this “the greatest of all time.”

Im starting to wonder if giving Taylor a shot at Reading for the end of the year wouldnt be such a bad idea. Cant hurt to give the guy a taste right?

Whether Taylor will be a September call-up next year or not, check out his lines from this year (with tonight’s performance included).
Lakewood (280 PAs) — .361/.441/.554 with 31:43 BB:K
Clearwater (170 PAs) — .312/.357/.488 with 12:35 BB:K
Obviously the strikeouts have picked up a bit in Clearwater, but he’s at a much more respectable 12:25 after his first 10 games. Plus, if he hits for the power he’s projected to (the doubles tonight show that he’s coming around on that front), then the strikeouts aren’t as big of a deal. If Taylor continues to rake in Clearwater, it’s entirely possible that he follows the Jason Donald track and begins next year in Reading.
But that aside, Q is the man of the night, so congratulations to him on his accomplishment. He hit a rough patch in May and June there, but he’s back up to a .282/.361/.349 and stealing bases at a 78% clip, all the while playing what’s presumably a solid center field. When all’s said and done, he could wind up being a valuable 5th outfielder type, with the ability to be a pinch runner or defensive replacement (which would eliminate the need to pay someone like Taguchi $1.05 million). Keep up the good work, Quintin, and hopefully we’ll see you in Philly in a few years.

Call him up in September!

I do not understand why everyone assumes that if a player is fast and plays the outfield, then he must be a good defensive player. Now, I do not have any idea whether Berry is a plus defender or not, but there is much more to defense then simply running fast. Ask Kenny Lofton.

Move him up to Reading now.
Calling him up to the big leagues in September is a huge stretch. Besides, we’re solid at corner outfield. That’s why we had no need for Manny Ramirez. ; )

JeffS Excuse me we are solid in right.? Jenkins is a waste and werth can’t hit right hand pitching. I would love to have someone to put in late in the game who can steal a base remember this team after the first three hitters has no speed.

Congrats to Q, but why’s nobody mentioning Carrasco’s start last night? I’m very impressed with how he’s pitching so far after the promotion. I dont’ want to go off on a tangent in an unrelated thread, so maybe this would have to go to a new post, but since Charlie basically guaranteed Happ a starting spot in the rotation next year, where does that leave Carrasco if he keeps dominating in AAA? Which starter gets the bump for Happ if Moyer hangs on for one more year?
To stay prospect related as we always try to do on this site, if CC keeps pitching this well and goes into spring training and keeps it going, does he get a spot in the rotation in April? I know I’m really jumping the gun here, but its an exciting possibility and I was wondering what people thought about it.

Neduol Caz: I know what you mean, and I admit that I can’t attest to Berry’s defense at all. With that being said, I think it’s fair to speculate that he’s improved as a defensive player (from being considered a little raw in that aspect of the game when he was drafted) by virtue of the fact that he’s continued to man CF at the past two levels.

just wondering what happened to Antoniato in Clearwater?

I think, quite frankly, it’s just a little too late to promote Taylor to Reading. If he has an adjustment period (as he did in Clearwater), by the time he gets through that the season will be ending.
No, let him dominate in high A ball and start him in Reading next year. And while it would be nice if we could rush him (the big league team needs all the offense it can get – especially an outfielder who gets on base and has plus power prospects.
Now, on to something more interesting. If Donald and Marson strut their stuff in China, I’m all for bringing them up to the big club when they get back. The Phillies need a jump start. Maybe some new blood will help do that. I am not sure I can stand to see too many more back-to-back shutouts. What’s up with that? (actually, I do have a clue – when the bottom of your line-up is Jenkins, Bruntlett, Ruiz and the pitcher, if the top off the order gets off track you’re in big, big trouble – and that’s where we are now).

“why’s nobody mentioning Carrasco’s start last night? ” — Because this was a post about Quintin Berry & Clearwater.
“just wondering what happened to Antoniato in Clearwater?” — he had a wrist injury and has been on the DL for several weeks. He is back in Clearwater, and said he should be playing again in about a week when I last talked to him.

To finish the thought . . .
And while it would be nice if we could rush him . . . . we’re better off having him fully ready if and when he arrives in Philadelphia.
By the way, no insult to Quintin Berry or anything, but he’s really a marginal prospect. He’s 23, he’s still in A ball, his batting average is okay, he hits for no power, and is stolen base percentage is only fair. At least right now, there’s nothing there that particularly excites me.

Taylor will be 23 in Dec. so I hope they fast track him with work in the AFL; and some swings in ST. He is hitting .405 (1.072 OPS) for the 9 games in Aug. so he is now not being challenged by righties in the FSL. Hope he see some lefties soon. He is only hitting .205 (8 for 39) against them but .344 against righties.

must have needed a day off. Admit i looked twice at the Reading box score to see if he was there, but he wasn’t. Bastardo did return although was shelled with 3 HR’s allowed but glad to see him back.

Good to see Q kept it going tonight. But both he and Taylor must show they can do it at AA . Guess we will have to “wait’il next year” to see as they used to say in Brooklyn.
“Quintin Berry recorded one of Clearwater’s six hits to extend his hit streak to 26 games and his consecutive games on-base total to 41.”

Quintin Berry is more than a marginal prospect. And how can a 41 game on-base streak and setting a team record for stolen bases not be exciting? Ridiculous.
Michael Taylor’s turnaround in Clearwater coincided with Q’s resurgence. Ask Taylor if he isn’t pleased with Q on base and more fastballs to hit.
I expect Taylor to finish strong; I hope he starts next season in AA Reading with Berry leading off.
Meanwhile the 2009 outfield depth chart is full of questions:
AAA
Watson (could be in Philly)
Bohn (40 man)
Snelling
Golson (promotion)
Moran
Knott
Thompson

AA

Taylor (promotion)
Q. Berry (promotion)
