6’7″ is good size, though he needs to bulk up (205 lbs.). And that’s about all I know.
Anyone have info on Coy? Anyone? Bueller?

figure this is a good time to offer out to you the All-Senior team for the upcoming 2008 season. So here are the 15 best returning four-year players in college baseball.
Stutes2.jpg
(Mike Stutes returns as the Friday starter for Oregon State)
P- Mike Stutes, Oregon State
2007 stats, 12-4, 4.07
Drafted: 9th round, St. Louis
When the No. 1 starter from the national title team returns for his senior year, it’s big news. His most impressive wins came in Omaha against Arizona State and North Carolina. He’ll team with frosh sensation Jorge Reyes to make a wicked pair of weekend starters.

They finally took a senior — Mike Stutes, a pitcher from Oregon State. Without knowing much about him other than he was a starter and a 9th round pick last year, it doesn’t seem like a bad pick.

Julio Rodriguez is an impressive kid. Watching the scouting video has made me a believer. I have a feeling that we will be hearing a lot about him in the coming years!

Step 2: Sign all these HS picks.
What’s with all the 3B in addition to Hewitt being projected as a 3B by the Phillies now?
LikeLike
Watching James Weber is laughable. The kid looks like he in junior high. He’s small AND skinny. Hardly what you look for in a “projectable” package. Nothing impressive about him at all except the 88mph fastball.

Love the Rosenberg pick there.

not trying to overstep my bounds here but I just found this on Coy:
Coy is one of the more unlikely potential top 10-round draft choices, but there seems to be more and more reason to believe that might happen as Coy attended numerous workouts prior to the draft. Coy is better known as a basketball player and was a Missouri 6-A first-team all-state forward. He has signed a basketball scholarship with Arizona State. But Coy has huge power with the bat and surprising hitting skills for his size and length. He hit .650 with 11 home runs this spring, many of them tape-measure shots, and .479-10-52 as a junior. He plays third base now but worked out with teams as a left fielder. Coy’s interest in baseball seems sincere as he missed large stretches of the AAU summer basketball circuit the past two years while playing summer baseball. Numerous published articles in local newspapers quote Coy and his family as saying they are very serious about baseball and would consider signing “for anything in the 8th round or better.

hope this helps

how far did the team have to travel to scout James Weber out of Clearwater Catholic?? hahaha. wonder if anyone has contacted him about an amount it will take to sign??

Coy is looking very interesting—-the Phillies did a private tryout with him in Missouri last week. He looks to have little opportunity in basketball for a pro career. The Dodgers were looking at him along with a couple other clubs before round 10. These kids may feed on each other. I like the way this draft is going.

because I have a serious sports addiction: DAMARII SAUNDERSON pick #466:
“”I believe Damarri is a cut above the rest. He is definitely one of the best players in the Michigan area coming out high school this year. He runs consistently under a 7, has an extremely strong arm (88 off the mound) and he has the ability to hit the ball out of the park on a regular basis. In my opinion he is a definite Division I prospect. The best thing about Damarri is his work ethic, he puts countless hours into making himself a better player. This is what separates him from most. ”

Weber looks like a decent pick at this point in the draft…he seems like the kind of guy who would’ve been drafted a lot higher if he were a few inches taller…They already took a bunch of raw 6’5″ righthanders with mid 90s velocity, so why not take a chance on a finesse pitcher with movement and command?

Are you still allowed to play NCAA basketball and minor league baseball simultaneously? I vaguely recall Tony Clark doing that way back when.

Agreed, baxter. I’ll gladly take a flier on a kid who may not necessarily be projectable, but who has “pinpoint” command.
And Smokey got it (I think). Looks like Cloyd was at UNO (a D-II school) for his freshman and sophomore years, then not for his junior year. Who knows where he went, but his numbers are legit (albeit at the D-II level) for his first two years:
2006 (FR): 7-1, 3.12 ERA, 75.0 IP, 74 H, 77:19 K:BB
2007 (SO): 8-2, 1.80 ERA, 85.0 IP, 73 H, 96:15 K:BB

Taco pal: I believe that Ricky Williams (he of NFL notoriety) was playing minor league ball for the Phillies while he was still at Texas.
That being said, I’m sure the Phils would want to buy Coy out of his basketball scholarship and have him commit full-time to baseball.

Taco: lots of people have played Pro baseball and still played in the NCAA.
I believe DENNIS DIXON the QB from OREGON played in the BRAVES SYSTEM (i know he was drafted).
Chris Weinke from Fla State played minor league ball b4 going back to school for pigskin…..
and im sure there are many many more. (I know a QB from the U of Miami played for Tampa’s system Kevin Kelly (maybe?)

$2million…wow thats alot for a guy that went that low. Boston’s got the money but considering what they’ll be paying for some of their higher picks, I’m not sure I see them paying.

The beauty of Boston picking Meyer is that they can use it as leverage against Kelly if necessary. If Kelly tries to play hardball with them, the Red Sox can put the same offer on the table for Kelly and Meyer and see who bites first.

Q: Keith from Boston asks:
I really liked the Phillies selections of Hewitt, Collier and Gose. The rewards may outweigh the risks. Who do you think is the surest bet to find MLB out of this group?
A:
Jim Callis: Lot of risk and potential reward for Phillies. Collier.

I love that they keep taking tons of tall HS Pitchers and not total Org Filter. Daniel Mars is a perfect example in the 40th round. The kid has a live arm, is tall, and cannot control anything. Perfect HS late pick.

SirAlden: on one hand I agree, especially if the Phils manage to sign a couple of them. The more young promising arms you get into the system, the better the chance that one of them pans out.
On the other hand, at some point pitchers like Cosart simply aren’t going to sign, so in some cases you may be better off taking some four-year college players who can serve as organizational filler. At the very least, it’s better than having to shuffle through a new merry-go-round of minor league free agents every year.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Phils can get some of these kids to sign. I’m particularly intrigued by Coy, Shreve, and Weber.

Tyler Cloyd is a great pitcher. He played for two years at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and took them to the College World Series (Division II). He is actually about 6’4″ and tops out at about 94, but has great control and command of about 4 different pitches.

Tyler Cloyd is currently in Arizona playing baseball for the Haveso Heat. He did go to UNO (University of Nebraska at Omaha) where he was starting pitcher his freshman and sophmore year. He also won conference pitcher of the year both years he was there. He and his older brother (Troy) hold the record for the most strikeouts in a season. Give him a chance, he just may surprise you!!
