Blackley update

Update: Thanks to reader BC for providing the latest from Scott Lauber. Blackley was not taken back by the Giants, and thus, is now Phillies property. This is a positive development.

Rotoworld sums up the situation as it stands

Rule-5 pick Travis Blackley was released by the Phillies.
The Philadelphia Daily News reports that he’s cleared waivers, and as a two-time Rule 5 pick, Blackley has two choices: accepting an assignment to the Triple-A affiliate of either the Phillies or the Giants (if they buy him back), or becoming a free agent. The Giants would have to pay the Phillies $25,000 to get Blackley righ

So there ya go. Hopefully he’d realize that he has a shot to pitch in the big leagues, possibly in a pennant chase, if he stays in Philly.

  1. If I’m Blackley, I’d choose the Phils for a couple of reasons.

First, their pitching staff has serious problems in both the rotation and the bullpen, so if I pitch well, I know I’ll get my shot.

Second, the Phillies obviously liked me enough to pick me in the Rule 5 draft, so it’s not like I’ll get buried in AAA forever.

Third, I have a chance to pitch in a pennant chase (as you said).

Good rationale? I’m justifying, I know, but I’d like Blackley to stick around… we need all the depth we can get.

True, PF. I think PG is burning his gears looking for ways to keep guys as we speak. I am looking for JD Furbin and Snelling to clear waivers and play in AAA and keeping Helms until someone offers a player that improves the staff [crosses toes and fingers].

Also, my pet darkhorse as this year’s Kendrick, Drew Carpernter, only pitched 4 innings, 2 hits, 2 walks, no runs, 6 Ks today against the Yanks, facing some regulars in his early innings. Just sayin’.

  3. DD,
I’m with you on Andrew Carpenter. That outing today was stellar. I was extremely excited to see his name in the box score…although admittedly I was a bit perplexed when I first saw his name listed with a save.

  4. Just because the Giants didn’t take him back, doesn’t he still have the right to become a free agent?

  5. Hope Will Savage gets some work against the Blue Jays.

… Minor-league pitchers Jason Anderson, Matt Childers, Brian Mazone and Will Savage, catcher Lou Marson, infielder Joey Hammond and outfielder Greg Golson accompanied the team to Philadelphia for exhibition games against the Blue Jays tonight and Saturday.

  6. Good to have Blackley for added minor league depth, but he really didn’t show a lot. I doubt he is the first, second, or third choice to come up as injury replacement.
