Agenda

Just a very brief update today, as there is still some quality interaction going on in yesterday’s Blackley post. Most of the prospect action from now until the end of ST will be in the minor league games, which again are fairly meaningless. I’ve again fallen behind, but my focus is going to be on more player profiles, and just doing some general touching up around here to try and get things set for the season. If a major development were to occur, I’ll share my thoughts, but we’re just going with open ended stuff from now until the start of the minor league season.

Today’s topic of the day; which Phillies pitching prospect will log the most innings at the major league level this season?

  1. Happ has to be the favorite, but given the Kendrick situation last year, you never know.

I like those who point to Segovia as a darkhorse for this year.

  2. It seems to me that the organization is pimping Carpenter (i.e press releases speculating that he could be “this year’s Kendrick.”). To me, that is their way of introducing the fans to him.

Other than Carpenter, I would have to say Happ. Bisenius ought to see some time, but he won’t log a lot of innings out of the bullpen

  3. I would have to second the Carpenter notion.

[Don’t know if y’al saw the line from yesterday’s game, but Kendrick got hit with a 4 run first by the Reds. He settled in okay though, only giving up 1 over the next 4 innings of work. 10 hits total. If he’s not going to K people, he just has no wiggle room for BBs.]

  4. Bisenius could very well give us the most inn. Our bp was a rotating door last year with injuries and ineffectiveness. Who’s to say our next “Kendrick” doesn’t come in the form of a bp savior. Also I don’t buy the Carpenter hype; not yet at least, so my vote is for the guy we all had high hopes for last year, Joe Bisenius.

Runner up- Blackley, I see us keeping him and he could get his shot soon. Him being a lefty doen’t hurt.

  5. With C Durbin as a starter/reliever swing man, and Benson as a potential starter, the most likely scenario would call for someone with reliever experience — probably Bisenius.

  6. From the prospect side, I’d guess on Happ. I was just down there and Happ looks good, as does Carpenter, who lost some weight, and Outman. Although he’s not a prospect and probably not on the current 40 man roster, another pitcher that looked terrific and just could get a shot this year was Brian Mazzone. I absolutely could see him doing well in AAA again and finally getting a shot to pitch in Philly. On paper, all the the Phils’ minor league teams will have the potential for very good rotations but, we’ll have to see how they do. There is definitely serious competition for jobs right now as you can see by who already was released.

  7. I’d say Outman. Carpenter has entered the game against the Yankees and set down the heart of their order.

  8. Ya know I was just sitting here saying “Do we have another Carpenter in our system?” Thinking he was already sen tout of camp.

Very, very impressive performance for Drew Carpenter today. Strikes out 5-6 over 4 innings, with a small smattering of hits and walks. Pitches out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the 9th. Oh, and got ARod to do a 5-4-3 GIDP.

The force is strong with this one…

  10. LHP R.J. Swindle – His Spring line (mostly AAA games): 8IP, 3H, 0R, 2BB, 8Ks. He is a dark horse who could sneak up to Philly and do damage.

  11. I think Carpenter will see the most action. Probably around May after Eaton gets released, Moyer goes down injured, and both Durbins show their true colors. A true Phillies optimist.

Could Outman, Carpenter, or Carrasco’s ERA’s really be any higher than Eaton’s in April if they got their shot instead? It’s the lousy money and politics that prevent organizational prospect growth.

  12. from the beggining of spring training carpenter has been my pick to be the dark horse this year, he’s polished, and Manuel and Dubee are aware of what he is capable of after his Yankees showing.

    From Dave Murphy’s blog

Manuel’s an old school guy, and he pretty much said, “I don’t care who you are or what level you are at, if you got 17-6, you are doing something right.” So they’ve heard about this kid. But today was the first time either Dubee or Manuel saw him in person. Afterward, I asked Dubee if Carpenter could help the team this season, possibly in the bullpen.

“He’s not far down the road,” Dubee said.
