  1. 2 Notes (and perhaps corrections):

    1. Binkoski is still there I think as he is listed as a Group 5 Infielder now (converted from an OF?)

    2. Josh Eachues is still there as he is listed as a Group 5 pitcher (previously a Group 4 catcher).

Thanks for the list. This is extremely valuable info.

  2. Can someone clarify something for me? I was under the impression that Luke Appert and Neil Sellers had to remain on the AAA roster b/c they were selected in the AAA Phase of the Rule 5 draft; however, it appears they are headed to Reading. Thanks.

  3. Some surprising names released: Zac Stott, Chris Rhodes, Corey Willey, Thayer and Burgamy.

    Thanks for the good info.

  4. I’m not sure of the rule exactly, but a player selected in the minor league draft can be placed at any level the following spring.

  5. Only those selected in the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft must be kept on the active roster or be offered back to their original club. The minor league phase is different and only applies after a certain amount of service time has been accrued. Not sure on the exact amounts but I believe players must be on the 40 man roster to be protected.

Several years ago, we lost Derrick Turnbow in this manner. Johan Santana is another example, (in the major league phase) but he was kept on the major league roster for that season by the Twins and subsequently could be optioned down in following years.

  6. SWB Work Group Currently at 25 but that doesn’t count Olmedo, Darensbourg, Knotts, Snelling, the Durbins, Benson and Condrey only 2-3 of whom will be on the major league 25. AAA limit is 24.

Reading is currently at 27 with a limit of 24. Clearwater is currently at 28 with a limit of 25. Lakewood is also at 28 with a limit of 25. 33 are in extended and 10 in rehab.

I could see another 6-10 getting released before minor league opening day.

Still no sign of Mach or Freeman.

Apparently we released Hector Made when nobody was looking too.

  7. Hector Made was listed the first week, but never again. However, so was Carlos Leon, and then he reappeared this week. Perhaps Made is having visa issues?

  8. Its sad to see some of them go….oh well, what can you do? Thanks for the report Jeff 🙂

  9. I am not so surprised by most of the releases- they indicate the improvement in the farm system. Jack Tilghman did surprise me- he is young and had a decent year in the GCL. I also thought that they would give Yarborough a little more of a chance considering his relatiely high draft status.

  10. So, if I’m understanding the Travis situation correctly, Mattair is going to be playing full season ball in Lakewood, and D’Arnaud will be in extended ST and then will be playing for Williamsport.

If so, I’m a bit surprised that Mattair is going to Lakewood. But then again, I plan on catching a few Blue Claw games this year, so that’s good.

  11. I am still surprised by some of the releases. I agree the farm system needs improvement however I think there are other players that should have been cut.

  12. I sort of doubt that Mattair can handle Lakewood. My guess is he whiffs 130+ times or is back at Williamsport in June.

  13. Takes a lot to opposite field.. Reason he was probably moved is his lack of an arm in the outfield.

  14. Based on the minor league spring game reports, I feel somewhat confident that the Lakewood rotation will be (not in order): Tyson Brummett, Drew Naylor, Migel Matos, Julian Sampson and probably Jacob Diekman (Diekman could be replaced by Chance Chapman).

Reading is going to include Carrasco, Outman, Carpenter and Castro with the 5th spot likely either Segovia or Overholt.

Clearwater should include Savery, Monasterios, Garcia, Bastardo and one of either Byrd, Cruse or Brauer.

  15. Squire,

I believe it should be. Brummett, Naylor, Sampson, Chapman, then Diekman. With Sampson being the stud of the rotation.

  16. Matos or Diekman would probably work out of the bullpen in 3-4 inning stints if they are not in the rotation. I’d almost do the same thing with Sampson as all of these young pitchers should top out at maybe 140 IP in their first full season. Guys like Brummett and Chapman should definitely be starters because they are more ready to handle the workload. That does not mean they are better prospects. It only means they are older and don’t need to be handled the same way as the younger guys.

  17. I’d actually cap Sampson and Diekman at around 110-125 IP. Next year you get them up in the 130-140 range, and gradually build. It wouldn’t be the worst idea to piggyback those 2 guys every 5th day for the entire season.

  18. Diekman can handle a workload that’s a bit larger since he attended a CC and had a longer season. I’d put him at around 140.

With Sampson, it would be smart to limit his innings but not limit them too much. His learning curve seems huge, especially with the numbers he’s put up against higher levels during ST. 120 is reasonable.

  19. PhilLee – Do you believe there will be another round of players released before the Phillies minor leaguers break camp. Rosters/Work Groups are still a couple players too high each and I am hoping there isn’t a “pushdown”. Thanks.

  20. There will definitely be another round of cuts. Probably about equal to the number of cut this past week, with quite a few being sent down to XST. Also there will probably be some free agent pick ups to fill a few shallow spots for some of the minor league teams.

  21. Squire,

I’d take a gamble and agree with Jeff. I’m unexperienced in terms of telling if cuts are going to be made or not.

Just remember, while some guys are assigned to XST, they can be brought up to the full season teams. I believe Travis d’Arnaud will be one of those cases. While he lacks the patience at a higher level, he still is above-average defensively and does have some good pop.

I also believe Miguel Matos will be sent down to Williamsport at some point this season. No way he stays in Lakewood. Giving opportunity to DeFratus to stake his claim in Lakewood.

  22. PhilLee,

Did Tim Binkoski get sent to Extended Spring Training or was he officially released???

  23. Lakewood should be interesting:

Of the four teenagers on the Lakewood roster seems like they are fast tracking last year GCL’s 19 year olds Mattair and Sampson by skipping Williamsport. Galvis at 18 and 19 year old D’Arby Myers both spent injury plagued short seasons last year in the NY-Penn. The left side of the infield plus Myers and Brown in the outfield will probably be four of the youngest position starters in the league. When Sampson starts and Sanchez catches, 6 on the field will be 20 or younger. Can’t get much younger than that.

Looks like the starting rotation will be the one that ended the season in Williamsport with Naylor, Chapman, Brummett and Diekman with Sampson taking Savery’s place. Should be interesting.

  24. The young guys will make that rotation exciting. Sampson is electric. Wait and see, he’s a BIG time prospect.

  25. Do you know where I can find a list of players who are in Extended Spring training for the phillies minor leaguers?

  26. Who is Matt Carson? Currently, Tim Binkoski is in Clearwater, playing in the extended season. He has been playing both 1st base and outfield. He batted 9th in the nation last year at Quinnipiac. His batting average was .424 with 81 hits. Also Tim was awarded the First ABCA Division I All-American In Quinnipiac Baseball History.
