Lincoln Holdzkom gone already?

The Phillies 40 man roster no longer contains Lincoln Holdzkom. Either this is a typo/web error on the Phillies end, or they’ve already seen enough to know that he’s not going to stick. Which do we think it is?

  1. OH MY GOD we are letting go Holdzkom!!!!! Well that’s it I am finished with this team. First we trade away David Bell and refuse to re-sign Paul Abbott, and now this.

  2. He’ll be outta here. There’s no room. I have no earthly idea why they selected him in the first palce. No control. If the Red Sox didn’t protect him, that ought to tell you something.

  3. I saw him pitch (on TV) against the Yanks back on March 2 (I think). I liked him. He was ahead of hitters (no starters) and if it weren’t for some ugly fielding by Andy Tracy he wouldn’t have been tagged with a run (maybe not a hit either). As the spring progressed, I know he had some trouble hitting the plate but he’s got talent. I wonder if the Sox will buy him back or let the Phil’s have him? He could be worth having around for a year. Need some AAA bench strength.

  4. Well, the Red Sox are pretty sharp, but they’re not perfect. Remember that gift named J.C. Romero? The Sox released him mid-season last year. How about Hanley Ramirez (granted, they got Josh Beckett in return, but they sure didn’t fleece the Marlins).

I haven’t seen Holdkom pitch, but I believe that any guy who throws 95 is worth having around. The light can go on pretty late and the player can still have a great career. Personally, I think we’ll see this type of evolution this year from Rosario. He’s not young (27), but he’s got a hell of an arm and he’s in the process of figuring it out. All of that having been said, it might be nice if they could work a trade to keep Holdzkom so he can get more seasoning in the minors.

  5. P.S. Thanks for the laugh Section 113. It’s sometimes nice to keep the minutae that we all agonize over in perspective. I mean, for crying out loud, we’re talking about Lincoln Holdzkom here.

  6. It looks like he cleared waivers and is a freee agent (according to Radano). I’m not sure the Red Sox had the room/desire to take him back.

He would be a pretty good bullpen guy for Allentown (or are the called Lehigh Valley? — I’ve seen both).

  7. I ran into Scott Mathieson today and had about a 30 minute conversation with him. While we were talking Zack Segovia came over for a few minutes. According to Zack, Holdzkom is now with the Red Sox….

Popped up on the Phills website about 1 hour ago.
I guess he could come back. Who knows.

  9. If he’s back with Boston then Radano must be wrong I guess. I thought with Rule 5 guys you first offer him back to his old team. If they don’t take him, then he has to clear waivers. Isn’t that right?

Radano reported that he had cleared waivers which would mean he was already offered back. Kinda confusing.

  10. The accuracy of my report was solely based on what I heard. I didn’t even think of it as news until I got back home and saw this post here.

    Time will tell…

  11. We’ll find out soon enough I guess. Maybe Segovia found out Holdzkom was offered back to the Sox and didn’t know the Sox refused to take him back. Or maybe he is with the Sox. I agree, time will tell.

  12. I’d like it if the Phils could keep him on a minor league contract, since as H Man said, the light could come on at any point. I have a feeling he’ll wind up back in the Sox system though.

  13. Per rule-5 players are offered back to thier original team, if not left on the Major League Roster. Holdzkom was offered back but not accepted as Boston’s roster is full. He is currently a Free Agent, but expect for him to sign a Minor League contract shortly with the Phils.

Blackley the other rule-5 is a different story as the Giants will likely take him back if offered back.

GM PG did his homework here, saw Boston would not cut anyone off thier 40 man roster just yet, then offered Holdzkom back so he could then resign him as a Minor League free agent.

  14. Boston refused him back under Rule 5, he clears waivers and they get him anyway. Boston gambled but ended up not having to pay the Phillies the $25K if they had accepted him back under the terms of Rule 5. Pretty sneaky sis!
