Baseball America today released their top 50 college players in each class. You can check it out here. This kind of goes along with a previous post, talking about guys that slipped away. Kyle Gibson, who we took in 2006, is now ranked the #1 college sophomore in the country. Brandon Workman, who we failed to sign this past summer, is ranked the #13 freshman in the country. Incidentally, they are the only two guys drafted by the Phillies on any of the top 50 lists. Looking at this year’s junior class, ie, the draft eligibles, the Angels have four guys they drafted in 2005 and didn’t sign, the Red Sox have 3, including consensus #1 Pedro Alvarez, and a bunch of teams have two guys. 23 of players were not drafted in high school, which gives you an indication of just how fast things can change in the prospect world.

To me, there’s such a hit or miss component to the draft and with money certainly not being unlimited for the Phillies, I think you have to draft the best players early that you know you can sign for reasonable slot money. Later on in the draft is when you consider going over slot for a few steals to add depth. Its amazing to me how many “can’t miss” prospects miss and later round guys surprise.

By the way, to the guys that think the Abreu trade was terrible because they got nothing back, you really need to understand the Phillies were trading a highly overpaid player and got the Yankees to pay all his salary. To fully compare the trade, you would need to add Garcia into what they got back. Unfortunately, that didn’t work but that was indirectly really part of that trade.

#27 on the Freshman list is RHP Josh Thrailkill who the Phillies drafted in 2006. He was injured last year and thus is a redshirt freshman. BA’s list is incorrect that he was never drafted. Neither Worley nor Barto made the Top 50 Juniors.

Ahhh, nice catch. I just quickly scanned the list.
I really wonder how close they were on Gibson. I doubt they even made an attempt. It’s a shame.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say I’m glad they didn’t sign Workman. I read in a posted article he got hit around last summmer in Connie Mack ball, giving up more hits than innings pitched. He would have been rocked in the Gulf Coast League. The money probably went to Sampson. Good move. Plus you still get the pick back this year.
