Another friend of the blog, Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus put out his Top 100 prospects list today. Carlos Carrasco checked in at #68, while Joe Savery slipped in at #96. You can check out the full list here, and you can ask Goldstein a question in his BP chat today at 1PM eastern.
JM (MD): Everyone seems down on Carlos Carrasco. The fact that he was only 20 last year and reached AA has to count for something, doesn’t it? Will his flaws be ironed out with more innings, or do you see his upside as being limited?
Kevin Goldstein: It does count for something, but so does his stuff and production. He just doesn’t miss a ton of bats, nor have to stuff to project as a big time star. Very good prospect, don’t get me wrong — But I think he’s a No. 3, borderline No. 2 in a perfect world.
Justin (Brno (Czech Republic)): How good will Adrian Cardenas be in the big leagues? Do you think his power will develop into a middle of the order type of bat?
Kevin Goldstein: I think he’ll be an above-average offensive second baseman, but I don’t see his power ceiling going past the 15-20 home runs a year range. Little guy, line-drive bat.
I’ll take Goldstein’s opinions over any of the others anytime. Sickels is ok, too. Law, Neyer, Dayn Perry are just blowhards.

I’ll gladly take a borderline #2. Looks great along with Hamels, Myers, Kendrick and possibly Savery and/or Carpenter and/or Outman in 2009. That would give us a legit #1, legit #2, and a borderline #2. Savery also is likely a borderline #2. Outman will be a legit #3/4 and Carpenter a legit #5 if all stay healthy. And then there will be Drabek to hopefully replace Myers if he doesn’t resign.

Ill take Phuturephillies opinions over every one!!! I do like Law even though he could be harsh I think hes very knowledgeable. I was just on his chat and I asked him if he was close to ranking Cardenas in the Top 100. At first he said he wasnt then he said he would keep an open mind on him this year and if his bat is really good or his defense improves he will be on the list next year.

PhuturePhillies, do you know about the site Project Prospect? I kind of like them although they do things a little differently. (Also they do not like Carrasco).

I know the site. I don’t really put a lot of stock into their opinions, but that’s just my opinion. I fully understand the worries on Carrasco, but I think it’s a bit premature to write him off as they appear to have done. But if everyone had the same opinion, this wouldn’t be any fun.

It’s unfair to compate anybody to the hack that is Dayn Perry.

I saw JM from MD asking about Carrasco and his age relative to his level, and I had a suspicion it was you, James 🙂 Good question. Any chance you see Carrasco being ready to pitch in 2009? Even if he’s a #3 starter who puts up 160 league average innings in 2009, that would help us immensely to compete with the Mets. The more I think about it, the more I think we need 0-3 service time guys to start contributing in the next couple years or we’ll end up needing to raise our payroll to 120-130 to stay near the 90 win level. In reality, it’s going to be important for those guys to be pitchers as the entire lineup is pretty much ironed out except for some uncertainty in leftfield.
