Smith isn’t really a prospect at this point, and he’s going to miss most of 2008 recovering from TJ anyway. But now any hopes of saving face on the Abreu dump rests squarely on the shoulders of Carlos Monasterios and Jesus Sanchez. When they represent our opening day battery in 2012, we’ll be having the last laugh!
Also wanted to add this tidbit, found in the Red Sox prospect chat today at BA
Q: samuel from haverhill, MA asks:
I saw lincoln Holdzkom pitch a lot in pawtucket and was very impressed. Will he be a loss to the red sox and what are his chances of making the phillies bull pen.
A:Jim Callis: Classic million-dollar arm and 10-cent head. It all comes down to Holdzkom figuring out his command and taking baseball seriously, and he never has done either. He cost the Red Sox nothing and I don’t think they’re too worried about losing him. Sure, he could make the Phillies as a Rule 5 guy, but I think he’s more a tease than anything.
“Classic million-dollar arm and 10-cent head” makes Holdzkom a classic Rule 5 pick. Problem is, you’re usually incredibly lucky if you hit on this type (see Booker, Chris).
Meanwhile, Beerleaguer seems to think that Smith will clear waivers, and I can’t see any reason why he won’t. So maybe he’s not quite done as a Phil, but I wouldn’t expect to see him at Citizens Bank Park until September at the earliest… and that’s if he comes back healthy and puts up good numbers in AAA.

How full is the Yankees’ 40-man roster?

I think PhillyFriar is correct that the odds are long, but I still don’t mind them taking a chance on Nuke Laloosh types. If the light goes on, you’ve grabbed something for nothing.

Chris Coste is our Crash Davis. Worked miracles last year when J. D. Durbin beat Peavy with a five hit complete game shut out in San Diego and caught Kendrick’s last minor league game at Reading which was a nine inning complete game.

Didn’t Bobby Jenks used to be nuts. I remember hearing stuff how he threw 100 but was insane. Real problems. Looks like a light went on and he figured it all out. Looks like it worked out for the White Sox.
Anyone remember the story with him

One interesting tidbit from Holdzkom’s minor league record is that he apparently didn’t give up a single home run is his first five years as a pro (over 200 innings pitched). He gave up five last year though.

Jenks had “behavioral issues” caused by excessive drinking.

Smith did indeed clear waivers and signed a minor league deal with the Phillies, per Beerleaguer. If he manages to get himself healthy, he could yet have a role with the club down the line.
