If the Phillies select a player, and I’m sure they will, I’ll have the full scoop here. If I here any more info before tomorrow, you’ll see it in this post. Until then, I have some other stuff to attend to, so let’s discuss the Rule 5 draft here, and also continue the discussion about trading prospects for elite talent in the previous thread. Good stuff so far on both sides of the argument.
• Royals outfielder Chris Lubanski to the Marlins with the fourth overall selection. Lubanski, the fifth overall pick in 2003, was touted for his speed and developing power early in his career. He’s still just 22, and a lot of teams have him on their Rule 5 radar for that reason more than anything else, but the fact is that Lubanski isn’t a plus runner anymore as he’s grown into his frame. He’s not even above-average. “This is a fringe-average runner for me,” said one AL scouting director. And Lubanski didn’t do himself any favors in the Arizona Fall League, often making weak contact and wound up hitting .200/.266/.412 in 85 at-bats.
As always, I’m hoping we take someone and that the guy is under 30 years old. I know it is tomorrow but does anyone know what time of the day it starts? 11AM seems right to me but that’s just a guess.

FYI – The Phillies have released RHP Julio Mateo. One might contemplate that this is to clear another spot on the 40 man roster for the Rule 5 draft tomorrow.

The Mateo signing was more than a little strange, but the release is stranger. What has changed since the signing and placing him on the 40-man? It is certainly not the need for a roster spot, since there are still super stiffs on the roster. At least Mateo seems to have pitching ability.

Releasing Mateo has to be part of Gillick’s master plan, right?
On to serious business. I think it’s 11AM Squire, but I’m not entirely sure. I’m still pulling for D’Antona or Lubanski, and a promising arm, but I won’t expect too much. The only other reason I can see for releasing Mateo is that a deal is in the works and the spot was needed, but that seems like a longshot.

I think Mateo’s trial or something legal was supposed to happen in December. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Mateo isn’t a huge loss. He’s what a 6th inn. guy at best? Maybe this means PG just was thinking if a certain guy is available tomorrow than he’ll go after him if not oh well but might as well have the room on the roster.

MILB.com articles says it begins at 10AM. Phillies pick 24th but 9 teams ahead of them have full 40 man rosters. Phillies have paid their way up the draft in recent years so they may try that again. As much as I would love to see a flier on Lubanski or D’Antona, I’ll guess that RHP Mumba Rivera will be the pick as he is from the Seattle organization. Also RHP Fernando Hernandez Jr. from the White Sox seems like a possibility.

I’m pretty sure that Lubanski went undrafted. The Fish took Jose Guevera at #5.
