  2. Can’t complain with Golson in that spot, but i’d prefer Bastardo- just because he hasn’t done anything to disappoint yet as a prospect.

  5. Golson. Nice first to games in the AFL by the way! (Yes – it’s TWO games – but I’m a life long Phils fan – I’m aloud to hang my hat on anything – no matter how minor!!!)

  6. I just can’t bring myself to get too excited about Golson, and maybe this is why: Compare his stats this year with Victorino.

    Spread out over an equal number of at-bats, that’s a somewhat similar season, except that Victorino has more steals and walks. I’ve also never seen Golson play, but Victorino is the Energizer Bunny and brings a lot of intangibles, plus he has a rocket arm (although Golson is supposed to have a pretty good arm).

    What’s my point? I’m not really sure. I think Victorino is a terrific player, but he’s more of a fourth outfielder type – it’s his hustle and defense that make him an everyday player.

    I gotta go with Jaramillo again, with Golson a few spots away (and yes, Golson is younger, etc etc, but he only walked 2 times in over 150 plate appearances at Reading). Unless he suddenly gets it, I feel he’s on the train to Reggie Taylorville (or maybe Chris Roberson with more pop)

  12. Gotta go with Golson here. He seems to be slowly piecing together his game at the plate and may very well develop into a very nice player.

    I’m hoping that he really steps it up in Fall Ball and carries that over to Reading next year. I still have high hopes for him.

  13. Again Ill go with DOMINICK BROWN just ahead of Edgar Garcia. I think these two are ahead of some of the names on the list already.

  14. Yea, Golson is hitting .571 after two games with 5 rbi’s and a .500 OBP but to me the most impressive thing about him after two games in the AFL is that he has struck out only once in 8 plate appearances. Go with Golson for the 12th best prospect slot.

  15. I still think Drew Naylor should go here, but he won’t get the votes so I’ll vote for Jason Jaramillo.

    Jaramillo is a solid defender at a premium skill position. Good baseball sense. Switch hitter. Will take a walk. Runs well for a catcher. Continues to improve his hitting. Will debut for the Phillies in ’08. Will not stay a back-up for more than two seasons, though he may remain blocked by Carlos Ruiz even as he’s pushed by Lou Marson. Could be trade bait but the Phillies should not just give him away.

  20. I’ll take a switch hitting catcher with good defensive ability and the plate discipline over a toolsy K-loving outfielder any day.

  23. I’ll take D’Arby Myers over Dom Brown.
    Comparing Reggie Taylor to Golson is actually a very good comparison. Golson by the way has a great arm and is a great athlete, the issue is whether his terrible on base % and high k% will ever improve. I think everyone would feel better about him if we saw improvement from year to year although he is certainly still young enough to still improve. Maybe the Eagles could use him…

  28. Maybe people are realizing that Jaramillo just is not that good. His offense has been pretty mediocre each year except his Lakewood season where he was a little old for the league. There have also been some conflicting reports about his defense. While he looks like he will make the majors at some point, he will have to improve his offense to be more than a backup catcher. On my list he ranks somewhere in the mid-to-late 20s in terms of prospects, certainly behind Marson and D’Arnaud at catcher.

  36. Honestly seeking enlightenment from those who think Jaramillo is a top-10 or so Phillies prospect. I don’t see it. A minor league OPS of .711 doesn’t excite me. Combine that with age 25, and even at AAA his potential seems limited. The .711 wasn’t a fluke, it was almost identical to his .708 at Reading last season. I accept that he will be above average defensively, but think his minor league stats translate to about a .650 OPS in the majors. He seems a little old to break out offensively. What you see is what you get.

    Check Johnny Estrada’s stats. At 25, he, too, made his debut following a .708 OPS season in AAA…

    I just happen to think Jaramillo will continue to improve as a hitter, that’s all. Switch hitting adds to his value. Also, I tend to rate catchers more favorably than other position players because they are always in demand. By calling a good game and nailing base runners he can contribute significantly without tearing the cover off the ball, which means his leash will be longer and his odds of making good go up. If he’s an outfielder, no way do I rate him this high…

    Opportunity is knocking for Jaramillo…not every prospect can say that.

  48. Sorry to rant, but personally, I like seeing guys debate here on who should be next to go. I voted Golson, but seeing the arguments for Jarmillo, Myers, Bastardo, Naylor, and Garcia makes me smile. I really like how far our farm system has progressed over the last two years. I’ve been tough on Gillick, but the farm team has made a 180-degree turn from heading way south to coming back north as a better system with some quality players.

    It’s October and this is the type of stuff we have to keep us excited over the next 3-4 months.
