This seems like a great time to acknowledge the home grown talent on this team. Howard, Utley, Rollins, Ruiz, Burrell, Bourn, Hamels, Kendrick, Eaton (sorry..), Myers, and Madsen. That’s pretty impressive and I’m sure all the minor league talent that we talk about on this site see that homegrown team and want to a part of it. Barring injury, there’s no reason this team shouldn’t be good for awhile. Let’s enjoy our first playoff team in a long time and hope that its the first of a few (think 1976 for you older guys..).
I was there yesterday and it was simply the greatest sports moment in my life!!!!! One thing i think needs to be said is: Thanks to Pat Burrell because this is one tough city and he gets alot of tough love and luckily he was tougher than us!!!
i had my doubts but I never stopped going to the games or watching them!!!
The player development system has taken its knocks, some justified, in the last couple years. But it’s impossible to imagine the Phils having won the division without the contributions of rookies Kendrick, Ruiz, and Bourn–all homegrown guys who supported the Rollins/Howard/Utley/Hamels/Myers/Burrell core.
although i am the happiest man in the world due to yesterdays events, we must not dwell too long on getting into the playoffs. yesterday was for celebrating, today we look to Wednesday and focus our attention to the 7:37 gametime between the Rockies and the Padres. Our journey is not over, phellow phans.
I also realize that the Phillies’ farm system isn’t perfect, but it is time to give a little credit where it is due. Ed Wade didn’t build this team, Mike Arbuckle and his staff did this. Here’s a salute and validation to Arbuckle’s “high ceiling” draft philosophy. Yes, it produces an inordinate number of busts, but when they hit, they hit BIG and, as we should always remember, you build a team around truly great players. You don’t need a lot of them to make your team very good. Arbuckle has given us some gems. Hamels, Howard, Utley, Rollins and maybe even Myers are bona fide stars and we have gotten some more help with the likes of Kendrick, Ruiz, and even Victorino and Burrell (okay, Victorino was a draft waiver guy and Burrell was the no.1 pick – but it’s all part of the same picture).
In the middle of next year, the next influx of talent should begin, and just in time.
For now, let’s celebrate – like crazy. To put this wait into perspective, the last time the Phils went to the postseason my son was not even born. Now’s he’s bigger than me and is a pulling guard for the Middle School team – it’s been a long while folks.
Just out of curiosity…do you guys have any thoughts on how these playoffs shape out, including where the Phils end up, and what free-agents-to-be and signings might happen?
Smalls – I believe in this team but at the same time I am very NERVOUS about the Rockies. With that I think who ever wins the Phillies/Rockies series goes on to the World Series! I believe we can win it.
A picture of sweet relief

I’m as excited about this win as anyone, but are we really putting the Top 30 on hold in remembrance of the NL East title?

Yesterday’s win brightens Phillies future as much as any of top 30. A dark cloud is lifted from local psyche.
