Which guys will get signed? Obviously the guys at the top are the ones we’re worried about, but I’ve heard NOTHING over the last 10 days on Workman, Sampson or Moncrief. The indications a few weeks ago were that the Phillies had confidence in both Workman and Sampson, so we’ll see.
I believe you had it on your board before but Jim Callis said in a chat that he thinks that the Phils have agreed to terms with Workman and Sampson but are waiting until just before Aug. 15th to make it official, per the commish’s rules. It’s the Phils, so I’ll believe it when I see it, but that could explain the utter silence regarding these guys.

I think he said that he thought they’d get deals done, not that they’d agreed to terms.

I played agaisnt mark adznick. he was a fastball with very very late movement. he has an unhittable changeup. His curveball is his strikeout pitch but he is not consistent with it. this kid has all the tools to be the real deal. THis is the kid we should concentrate on signing

I’m surprised Adznick isn’t more into playing for his hometown team. Or is he just playing it cool to get more money?

He’s been a strong college-commitment for quite some time, Adznick that is. I believe Wake Forest. He’s made it known for a while that he plans on going there. That may-and-well change, but I remember reading after the draft an article where he stated somethign to the extent of “I will definitely be at WF next year”.

He’s committed to Wake. The hardline stance could be to try and extract more money from the Phillies, but if he truly believes he’ll be a top 3 round pick in 3 years, that’s not a bad gamble. Then again, with attrition rates being what they are for pitchers, he might want the money. I’m not sure of his family’s financial well being, but he did go to a private charter school, so I’m sure he’s fine in that respect. They also could be pushing him to go to college and get a degree, and in some cases, money just doesn’t talk.

Some guys may just want to go to college for reasons other than baseball. The percentage of HS picks who after they finish their playing career then go back to college for their degree is very small. Even then going to college from age 24-28 is different than going between age 18-22. Even if my kid turns into a baseball stud, I’ll want him to get his college degree.

I hate to say this, but a college degree aint what it used to be.

Adzick’s father is the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital. I seriously doubt that money is an issue for that family.

Well, that defines his family’s financial well being.

One could probably also surmise that academics might be considered pretty important around the Adzick family. I’m profiling, but I think it’s a fair conjecture.

It’s definitely a reasonable assumption. I think on the other side, you aren’t young enough to play baseball professionally your whole life, and if that’s what he sees himself doing, he has to consider it and consider which path is best for him. You can always go back to school and get a degree or three, even if you can’t lift your left arm over your head.

I was going to apply to Wake but never got that far, got into Elon right down the road, was accepted that December, and the rest is history.

What happened with your baseball career, James?

My baseball career ended when I was like 12. I learned how to throw a curveball and slider, threw too many, and hurt my arm. I can throw about 25 pitches now, at like 75-80 mph, then my arm gets really sore for 2 days. I have the utmost admiration for guys who can throw 100+ pitches a night with an average velocity around 90mph.

The poster at phillies.com who purports to be a scout for another organization put up a post on August 4th indicating that his sources indicate it is unlikely that the Phillies will sign either Workman or Sampson. Don’t know how “inside” he is with respect to the Phillies negotiating stances but I thought I would pass this along.

It is not looking good for Workman. Still no offer since the day of the draft. Looking like Texas for him. He has been pitching his but off for his summer team though.

thats kind of…well…depressing. But I can’t say I’m completely shocked.

meanwhile Texas is recruiting him like never before. At 18 would anyone expect him to do.

He is at WF and he spent the first half of his life in San Francisco, Ca. Then he came with his parents to Philly. His Grandfather played for the Cardinals AAA club till injury ended it and he went into teaching. Mark is a Red Sox fan!
