Quick update this morning from the VSL. The Phillies threw a combined no-hitter, mainly behind Juan Colmanarez. They defeated a good team in second place Seattle, winning 2-1
Colmenarez threw 8 perfect innings, striking out 12. In the 9th, Victor Diaz came on and loaded the bases with 2 BB and an error. Howard Cedeno then relieved to retire the side and get the save. Colmenarez is a 20-year-old LHP. Along with Freddy Ballesta he is anchoring the staff (45 IP, 34 H, 3 BB, 49 K). At age 20 one could argue that he should be in GCL now, especially given the K/BB ratio which suggests a very polished pitcher.
Later this week we will be back with an initial DSL update. The team is 4-6 in the early going. Catcher Sebastien Valle looks like a potential star, going 11-23 with 6 BB, 4 2B, and 1 HR in the first few weeks. He is only 16 years old.
Wow that is really impressive for a 16 year old. Do you know anything else about him? Was he a highly touted signing?

Everyone – who the heck is Dominic Brown? He is 19 year-old who hit .214 in the Gulf Coast League last year and did not appear in any league this year until he magically re-appeared at Clearwater right before the FSL all-star break, where, in 3 games he has ripped the cover off the ball. I don’t think I’ve every seen any historical precedent for this in the Phillies’ system – a high school kid (20th round pick in 2006) who has no success in rookie ball, does not start the next season in a league and then jumps 3 league levels to high A ball. Unless I’m missing something, the organization must think he’s a future superstar and he should be on everyone’s radar screen starting immediately.
PLEASE RESPOND IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS GUY.

Brown is a very raw, toolsy outfielder who was set to play WR at Miami before signing last year. He’s 6’5, 200lbs, and played well during extended spring training, so the Phillies gave him a couple games at Clearwater. He’s been re-assigned to short season Williamsport. He’s a prospect, but he’s still very raw.

Brown also pitched a lot in high school, so this is really his first chance to hit full time, especially given the football. He is showing why a team needs to sign a few toolsy players each year, especially when they only cost a 20th round draft pick and a little extra cash. Hopefully the team is paying attention as they look at some of their HS flier picks from this year.
