Eoesn’t Carpenter belong at this level, at least to start the
season?

Carpenter was one of the more polished pitchers to go in the first few rounds. He might start at Lakewood, but the org is pretty high on him it seems, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he started at Clearwater. There is a potential log jam in the Lakewood rotation, and they won’t move Carpenter or Brauer to the pen. Dubee struggled much more than Carpenter and Brauer in 2006, so he’s almost a lock to start at Lakewood, and Pfinsgraff, while he pitched well, might not be ready for High A yet. Carpenter, as a 4 year senior and a real polished arm, might be able to make that jump.

Your site is very informative. I was just wondering your thoughts on Gus Milner since he went to the University of Kansas so i read about him in the paper. Just wondering if any good news about him and his future.

Milner is an interesting case. Most “toolsy” outfielders the Phillies like to draft are the wiry, speedy types. Milner is 6’3, 200+ I believe, but supposedly is a great athlete. He had a decent junior and senior year at Kansas (.896/.916 OPS respectively), but struggled at Batavia. He didn’t really excel in any one area, whether it be hitting for power (.390 slugging), stealing bases (4) or drawing a lot of walks (20 in 271 AB), so I’m not really sure what to make of him. My guess is that he ends up a reserve OF at Lakewood, since he turns 23 in April.

Walls was one of 5 Phillies hopefuls assigned to BA’s “31st

It would be nice to see Yarborough do something in ’07, but he
looks like another in a line of failed “slugging” 1B draftees
for the Phils. (Howard being the exception, of course.) I’d
be interested to hear what you think of him, given his fairly
high draft ranking.
