Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

Lehigh Valley went 3-3 on the week and stood at 6-8, tied for 4th place in the Northern Divison of the International League, 3 games behind division leading Syracuse. Take a look at ‘Pigs who are among league leaders, John Mayberry is 2nd in the league in runs (11), DeWayne Wise is tied for 2nd in triples (2), Cody Ransom is tied for 6th in homers (3), Chris Duffy is tied for 7th in RBI’s (11), and Andy Tracy is tied for 4th in walks (9) and 2nd in strikeouts (19). Lehigh Valley Weekend Report

Friday–Lehigh Valley ended their 4 game set with Pawtucket early, as their game was suspended after two innings with no score. Not much to report other then the rehab appearance by JC Romero, in which he pitched a scoreless first inning, striking out two. This game will be picked up in the bottom of the 2nd on June 29. Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

Another slow start for Lehigh Valley, this time at 3-5, tied for 4th place and 2.5 games behind division leading Syracuse. Still a little early to be looking at league leaders. Look for the feature to begin next week.  See below for notes on propects, transactions, and probable starters.

Monday–The ‘Pigs opened a short two game series in Pawtucket Monday evening and Andrew Carpenter (0-1) was hit hard in his first start of the year, lasting just 3.1 innings and giving up 5 runs on 6 hits in the 6-5 Lehigh Valley loss.  He walked 3 and didnt strike out a batter. Carpenter threw 75 pitches, just 41 for strikes. An RBI triple by John Mayberry gave the ‘Pigs the early lead, but that was quickly answered by Pawtucket who didnt look back. An RBI double by Chris Duffy cut the lead to 6-2, and then a three run ninth made the game close.  John Mayberry led the ‘Pigs at the plate with a 3-4 effort, including a triple and 2 RBI’s. ‘Pigs Weekend Update

Friday-It was their second game of the year, and with it came their second walk off loss for Lehigh Valley. A 10th inning sacrifice fly by Chris Duncan scored Pete Orr, giving SYracuse the 10 inning 5-4 victory. Two critical errors by Cody Ransom led to 4 unearned runs in the loss, and the 3 thru 6 hitters in the Lehigh Valley lineup (Mayberry, Tracy, Ransom, Wise) were a combined 0-18, which was difficult to overcome.  Ryan Vogelsong got his first start in three years on American soil and went 4 innings giving up three runs (none earned) on two hits.  He walked five and struck out two.  Jason Anderson (0-1) took the loss in relief. Chris Duffy was the offensive punch going 3-4 with a double and triple knocking in three. Wilson Valdez and Brian Bocock added two hits apiece. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update

Lehigh Valley Opening Day Report

Lehigh Valley opened their season Thursday in Syracuse with a back and forth battle between the ‘Pigs and the Chiefs (Nationals affiliate).  The 7-8-9 hitters jumped all over Lehigh Valley for 6 RBI’s and the ‘Pigs were unable to hold a late 6-4 lead after they had come back from an early 4-2 deficit.  Brian Mazone started for Lehigh Valley and went 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits.  He walked 2 and did not have a strike out.   Mazone left with the ‘Pigs trailing 4-2, however that was quickly turned around with a three run triple by Paul Hoover, who scored himself on a wild pitch giving Lehigh Valley a 6-4 lead. Syracuse bounced right back in the 8th, scoring two runs off lefty Mike Zagurski. A two out RBI single by Rich Thompson scored DeWayne Wise giving Lehigh Valley the 7-6 lead, which was immediately answered by Syracuse in the 9th with a solo homer by Roger Bernadina off of Ehren Wasserman to tie the game. After walking the bases loaded following the homer, Wasserman (0-1) gave up a walk off single to Pete Orr which won the game for SYracuse, 8-7. Continue reading Lehigh Valley Opening Day Report

Lehigh Valley– End of Season Report

Before we get to the final Lehigh Valley report of 2009, a huge thank you goes out to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Media Relations Staff.  ‘Pig broadcasters/Media Relations Director Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer were very helpful during this year and for that Phuture Phillies thanks you.  More specifically, without the near daily assistance  of Lehigh Valley Media Relations Assistant Tommy Viola, the information available to the readers of this website would have been drastically less.  Dealing daily with tv/radio/ print/blog media, in sometimes extremely stressful situations, Tommy’s availability (and good humor) and the importance he placed in ensuring everyone could do their respective jobs professionally can not be overstated.  Thank You.

Lehigh Valley finished their season at 71-73, in 3rd place of the Northern Division of the International League.

‘Pigs league leaders: Andy Tracy finished 4th in runs (76), 2nd in homers (26), 2nd in RBI’s (96) and led the league in walks(74); Mike Cervenak was 5th in hits (141), 5th in RBI’s (77), 8th in average (.305) and 3rd in doubles (36); Rich Thompson was 5th in triples (7) and 8th in stolen bases (26).  ANdrew Carpenter was 4th in Wins (11), , 3rd in IP (156), 6th in strikeouts (120), and 6th in ERA (3.35); Kyle Kendrick was 5th in ERA (3.34) and 3rd in WHIP (1.17). Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

An abridged version of the Lehigh Valley Weekly Report, with a full report coming out on Monday or Tuesday with the end of the Lehigh Valley season.

8/31/09–Lehigh Valley broke their three game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Pawtucket in their return home on Monday evening.  Andrew Carpenter (11-5) started and was very strong, going 7 innings and giving up just a run on six hits.  He walked two and struck out four.  Pawtucket took an early 1-0 lead, which Lehigh Valley answered in the fifth inning on a Sac Fly by Jason Ellison.  An RBI double in the 6th by John Mayberry gave the ‘Pigs a 2-1 lead, which they added to in the 7th with two more runs on another two run single by Andy Tracy.  Steven Register came in to pitch a perfect nonth, earning his 7th save.  Mayberry, Furmaniak and Tuffy Gosewisch all had two hits for Lehigh Valley, while Andy Tracy broke out of his recent slump with a 3-4 night. ‘Pigs Weekend Update

8/29/09-After a rainout Friday night in Syracuse, Lehigh Valley played two on Saturday with Gustavo Chacin getting the start in Game One.  Neither team could muster any offense until Chacin allowed a grand slam to Ian Desmond, giving the Chiefs a 4-0 lead in the 4th inning. That hit was all Syracuse needed as the ‘Pigs managed just three hits, getting shutout for the tenth time this season. Chacin threw a complete game (although the game was shortened due to minor league doubleheader rules) going 6 innings and giving up 4 runs on 3 hits.  He walked 4 and struck out 1.  The only notable offensively for Lehigh Valley was John Mayberry was was 2-3 with a double. Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

A good week for Lehigh Valley going 5-2, although with 12 games left in the International League season, Lehigh Valley is at 64-68, in 4th place of the Northern Division of the International League, 9 games behind division leading Scranton.

‘Pig Leaders–Andy Tracy is 4th in the league in runs (71); leads the league in walks (68), 2nd in RBI’s (85)and 2nd in homers (24); Mike Cervenak is 9th in hits (122) and 4th in RBI’s (74); Rich Thompson is 7th in triples (5) and 6th in stolen bases (26).  On the mound, Drew Carpenter is 4th in the league in Wins (10), 8th in ERA (3.33), 3rd in IP (143.1), 5th in strikeouts (115) and 3rd in homers allowed (17); Kyle Kendrick is 9th in ERA (3.38) and 4th in WHIP (1.19). ‘Pigs Weekend Update, Cairo Called Up

8/21/09–Andy Tracy continued swinging a very hot bat, leading Lehigh Valley to their 9-1 victory over Scranton on Friday evening. Tracy was 3-4 with 2 runs scored, a homer (24) and 3 RBI’s, and hit his 4th homer over the last three games. Kyle Kendrick (7-7) started and was very strong, going 6 innings, and giving up just a run on 3 hits. It was a night when the ‘Pigs hit in the clutch, going 7-17 with RISP, with Mike Cervenak and Jason Ellison helping lead the way, both with multi hit games.
