‘Pigs Weekend Update, September Callups
A review of the weekend for the IronPigs with a few notes and September call up predictions.
Friday–Lehigh Valley was in Scranton on Friday evening and lost in a slugfest, 10-7. Scranton struck early with a run in the 2nd off of Drew Carpenter, taking a 1-0 lead. Lehigh Valley answered back with a John Mayberry RBI single in the 4th, tying the game, however the tie lasted just a few minutes as the Yanks put two more on the board in the bottom of the inning, giving them a 3-1 lead. A three run 5th inning, gave Lehigh Valley the lead at 4-3 in the see saw affair, the key hits being doubles by Joe Savery and Paul Hoover. Scranton scored 6 runs in the sixth inning knocking Drew Carpenter (7-11) out of the game, having gone 5.1 Innings, giving up 6 runs on 6 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 3. Carpenter was replaced by Oscar Villarreal who gave up 3 runs without getting an out. Lehigh Valley did get three back in the 7th, but by then the game was out of reach. Joe Savery led the way offensively, going 3-4 with a double, and two runs scored, while Paul Hoover was 2-3 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update, September Callups

‘Pigs Weekend Update
A look at the ‘Pigs weekend with a few notes, transactions and probables attached at the end.
Friday–About as rare as a solar eclipse, the ‘Pigs won in both extra innings and by one run in their 7-6 victory over Pawtucket on Friday evening closing out their road trip. In what was their second biggest comeback in team history (5 runs), Lehigh Valley received excellent pitching out of the bullpen to keep them in the game and allow the victory in the 10th inning when none other than Dane Sardinha scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error. After a rough outing by starter Brian Mazone (4IP 6R,4ER), the combination of Gordon, Zagurski and Villarreal pitched 6 scoreless with Oscar Villarreal (3-3) picking up the win in relief. The ‘Pigs down 5-0 going into the 5th, scored 4 runs in the 5th to put them back in the ballgame with a two run double by Brian Bocock and an RBI single by Rich Thompson the big blows. Bocock led the team offensively going 2-2 with a double, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases, and 3 RBI’s. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update

‘Pigs Weekend Update
Another 1-2 weekend in the books. See below for the details, along with a few notes.
Friday–Lehigh Valley began a road trip in Rochester with a 5-1 loss on Friday evening. It was fairly smooth sailing for starter Vance Worley (0-2), who had given up just a lone run until the 7th, when he left the game after giving up an RBI single to Eric Lis. Oscar Villarreal entered and immediately(first pitch) gave up a three run homer, allowing two of Worley’s inherited runners to score, giving Rochester an insurmountable 3 run lead. Worley’s line was 6.1IP 5H 4ER 1BB 7K. The only Lehigh Valley run came in the 4th when a Cody Ransom sac fly scored John Mayberry who had doubled. It was a big night for Mayberry who went 3-4. Matt Rizzotti chipped in with two hits as well. Lehigh Valley left 10 men on base and were 1-12 with RISP. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update

‘Pigs Weekend Update
Yet another lost weekend in Lehigh Valley, as they lost all three games to Gwinnett and have now lost an abysmal 12 out of 13. They are currently at their low water mark of the year, 25 games below .500.
Friday–Another in a long line of one run losses, this time 2-1 to Gwinnett at home on Friday evening. Gwinnett scored early on ‘Pigs starter Nate Bump who left after two innings after being on a pitch count, as he returned to the mound after suffering from Lyme’s disease. In his 2 innings, he gave up a run on five hits. Lehigh Valley tied the score in the 3rd when a Rich Thompson sac fly scored Brian Bocock. Gwinnett regained the lead in the 5th off of reliever Joe Savery (1-10) on consecutive doubles by Freddie Freeman and Joe Thurston. Savery went 4 innings giving up a run on 4 hits. Lehigh Valley was unable to advance a runner past first base after the 3rd inning. Melvin Dorta was the only player to speak of offensively with 2 hits, while on the mound Antonio Bastardo has another scoreless, hitless performance, striking out 2 in his 1.1 innings of work. Iron Pigs game 8/7
I went to the Iron Pigs game tonight, sat in the picnic area down the LF line about even with the left fielder. Great seats to watch the action in the IF, and you could really see the movement in a lot of the breaking pitches thrown.
The IPs lost 11-7 to the Gwinnett Braves, largely because of bad BABIP luck and mistakes that came back to bite them. The Braves had four flare doubles fall in down the lines, and, to their credit, made two difficult catches of flares hit by IPs batters. IPs also hit more than their share of “at ’em balls”.
