A look at the Lehigh Valley weekend.  As usual, a full report on the ‘Pigs coming each Thursday.

Friday–Lehigh Valley opened their 4 game series in Scranton with an unusual game, where starter Andrew Carpenter (1-2)was on pitch count (presumably around 40) and was removed after two innings, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits in the Lehigh Valley 6-3 loss. AFter Scranton jumped ahead 3-0, Lehigh Valley got one back in the 3rd on a Rich Thompson RBi single, but Scranton added 2 in the sixth and one more in the seventh to put the game away.  The ‘Pigs scored two in the 8th to make in respectable they key hit being a Andy Tracy RBI single.  Reliever Brian Gordon threw four innings in relief, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. SS Brian Bocock’s rough start continued, committing two errors(3,4). Reading Weekly Report

After a busy first week (and a fraction), the RPhils stand a 5-4 in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League, 1.5 games behind division leader Trenton.  The RPhils had a 4-game winning streak over the first weekend of the season, but have lost far more than they’ve won outside the streak. They are winless on the road, at 0-2.  Reading is 4th in the league in BA at .247, with their .659 OPS being 8th in the league, so they really have not been hitting.  Their 36 runs scored is, however, tied for 6th in the league, basically dead-center.

The pitching has been a little below league average, with a team ERA of 3.87, but, looking at the peripheral stats, they’re not even that good.  Their problem has been walks, as they lead the league with 36 so far while being last in the league with strikeouts, whiffing only 43.  They’ve also given up 9 HRs, tied for the most in the league.  Honestly, given the talent on this team, the pitching should improve.

Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

Another slow start for Lehigh Valley, this time at 3-5, tied for 4th place and 2.5 games behind division leading Syracuse. Still a little early to be looking at league leaders. Look for the feature to begin next week.  See below for notes on propects, transactions, and probable starters.

Monday–The ‘Pigs opened a short two game series in Pawtucket Monday evening and Andrew Carpenter (0-1) was hit hard in his first start of the year, lasting just 3.1 innings and giving up 5 runs on 6 hits in the 6-5 Lehigh Valley loss.  He walked 3 and didnt strike out a batter. Carpenter threw 75 pitches, just 41 for strikes. An RBI triple by John Mayberry gave the ‘Pigs the early lead, but that was quickly answered by Pawtucket who didnt look back. An RBI double by Chris Duffy cut the lead to 6-2, and then a three run ninth made the game close.  John Mayberry led the ‘Pigs at the plate with a 3-4 effort, including a triple and 2 RBI’s. ‘Pigs Weekend Update

Friday-It was their second game of the year, and with it came their second walk off loss for Lehigh Valley. A 10th inning sacrifice fly by Chris Duncan scored Pete Orr, giving SYracuse the 10 inning 5-4 victory. Two critical errors by Cody Ransom led to 4 unearned runs in the loss, and the 3 thru 6 hitters in the Lehigh Valley lineup (Mayberry, Tracy, Ransom, Wise) were a combined 0-18, which was difficult to overcome.  Ryan Vogelsong got his first start in three years on American soil and went 4 innings giving up three runs (none earned) on two hits.  He walked five and struck out two.  Jason Anderson (0-1) took the loss in relief. Chris Duffy was the offensive punch going 3-4 with a double and triple knocking in three. Wilson Valdez and Brian Bocock added two hits apiece. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update

Reading struggles in opener

The first batter on the prospect-laden Red Sox farm club, the Portland Sea Dogs, clearly was privy to the theme for opening night. Ryan Kalish hammered a Vance Worley mistake deep into RF, over the wall. That would be the first of four home runs by the Dogs, the second of which was a game-changing 3-run bomb deep into the left field night by Luis Esposito, changing a 3-2 lead into a 5-3 deficit, and coming off Matt German, a reliever who projects to play an important role for Reading this year.

Worley, beginning his second year in AA, settled down nicely to throw three very good innings after his rocky first, but gave way to German after allowing two hits in the fifth, which he entered with a 2-run lead.

The game was never really close afterward. Continue reading Reading struggles in opener

Lehigh Valley Opening Day Report

Lehigh Valley opened their season Thursday in Syracuse with a back and forth battle between the ‘Pigs and the Chiefs (Nationals affiliate).  The 7-8-9 hitters jumped all over Lehigh Valley for 6 RBI’s and the ‘Pigs were unable to hold a late 6-4 lead after they had come back from an early 4-2 deficit.  Brian Mazone started for Lehigh Valley and went 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits.  He walked 2 and did not have a strike out.   Mazone left with the ‘Pigs trailing 4-2, however that was quickly turned around with a three run triple by Paul Hoover, who scored himself on a wild pitch giving Lehigh Valley a 6-4 lead. Syracuse bounced right back in the 8th, scoring two runs off lefty Mike Zagurski. A two out RBI single by Rich Thompson scored DeWayne Wise giving Lehigh Valley the 7-6 lead, which was immediately answered by Syracuse in the 9th with a solo homer by Roger Bernadina off of Ehren Wasserman to tie the game. After walking the bases loaded following the homer, Wasserman (0-1) gave up a walk off single to Pete Orr which won the game for SYracuse, 8-7. Continue reading Lehigh Valley Opening Day Report
