Reading ended this week at 38-40, still mired in 5th place and now 8.5 games out of first. Looking at the league leaders in hitting, Jesus Merchan remains the leader in batting average (.342) and is fourth in on base %(.409). Mike Costanzo leads the league in homers(15) and strikeouts(100), and is 8th in runs (44). Greg Jacobs is 5th in homers (12), and 5th in RBI’s(48). Javon Moran is 3rd in Stolen bases (18), and Jason Hill is 8th in the league in doubles(22). Pitching leaders include Matt Maloney, 2nd in innings (93.1), 9th in wins(6), 5th in strikeouts(78), and 3rd in homers allowed (10). The Phils went 2-5 since we last spoke and are now 25-26, in 4th place and 5 games behind leading Akron in the Southern division. Reading still has numerous players among the league leaders in categories both good and bad. Landon Jacobsen is 4th in the league with 5 wins and 2nd in the league with 64.2 innings pitched. Kyle Kendrick is the league leader with 66 innings pitched. Matt Maloney is 10th in the league with 44 strikeouts, however has yielded 7 homers which ranks 3rd in the league, behind Tim McClaskey who is the league leader in homers allowed with 8. In the hitting categories, Javon Moran, despite his injury still ranks among the leaders in runs (2nd, 36), hits (3rd, 53), and stolen bases (2nd, 16). Greg Jacobs has been climbing the ranks and now ranks 8th in hits (50) and 3rd in RBI’s (32). The Phils have two league leaders in hitting categories. Jesus Merchan in average (.371) and Jason Hill with 18 doubles. Mike Costanzo ranks 2nd in homers with 10, and continues to lead the league in strikeouts with 67.
Reading–Week Seven
The Phils end Week Seven having won 2 consecutive games againt New Hampshire, leaving Reading at 23-21 on the year, in 4th place in the Southern division, 2.5 games behind front running Trenton. After one more game against New Hampshire, Reading travels to Portland for a four game series before returning home to face Bowie. In the batting leaders category, Javon Moran continues to lead the league in runs (36), hits (52), is second in the league with 16 Stolen bases, and eighth in league in average at .310. Jesus Merchan is 6th in the league with 44 hits, and continues to lead the league with a .383 batting average. Mike Costanzo is third in the league with 8 homers and leads the league with 60 strikeouts. The Phils have 2 players in the top 10 in RBI’s as Greg Jacobs is 3rd with 27 and Juan Tejada is 7th with 25. In the pitching categories, Landon Jacobsen is tied for second in the league with five wins, Kyle Kendrick continues to lead the league in innings pitched with 60 and Matt Maloney ranks 10th with 40 strikeouts.

Jesus Merchan continues to lead the league in average at .381, is second in on base percentage (.440) and 10th in the league in hits (27). Mike Costanzo is second in the league in homers (8) and leads in the league in strikeouts (49). Kyle Kendrick leads the league with 53 innings pitched and Landon Jacobsen is 5th in the league with 4 wins.

Reading closed out week five slipping to 15-16 and losing ground to front running Akron, slipping to 2.5 games behind in the Southern division. Hitting leaders for the Phils include Jesus Merchan, 2nd in the lague in batting average hitting .390 and Javon Moran who is 10th at .325. Moran also leads the league in runs scored with 29, stolen bases with 14, and hits with 38. Joey Hammond is 4th in the league with 21 runs scored. Jason Hill is 4th in the league with 9 doubles. Mike Costanzo is 4th in the league with 5 homers and 9th in RBI’s with 17. Costanzo also leads the league in strikeouts with 45. Juan Tejada is 4th in the league with 21 RBI’s. Pitching leaders include Anderson Garcia tied for the league lead with 6 saves and Kyle Kendrick who continues to lead the league in Innings Pitched with 39. Tim McClaskey is 2nd in the league in homeruns allowed with five, and Matt Maloney is just behind him in 3rd place, having given up 4 homeruns.

After the first four weeks of the season Reading, although inconsistent remains tied for the top of the Southern division (with Akron), with a 12-10 record. Looking at how individual Phillies rank in the league SS Jesus Merchan is hitting .373 and is 2nd in the league in batting average. OF Javon Moran leads the league with 21 runs scored and is 4th in stolen bases with 9. 3B Mike Costanzo is third in the Eastern League with 5 homeruns, and 6th in the league with 15 RBI’s, however his 31 strikeouts (2nd in the league) and 11 errors, remain of great concern. Looking at the pitching, Anderson Garcia still leads the way with 6 saves , and Kyle Kendrick is leading the league with 32.0 innings pitched.
