General Discussion – Week of 12-2-2013

Non-Tender Deadline is today. This team probably shouldn’t let go of John Mayberry for nothing. If they eventually sign a backup CF, he should be tradeable, even if it is just to dump what will likely be a reasonable contract for a bench bat with pop, and they already have one 40-man roster spot available for a rule 5 guy if they find one. No harm in keeping him right now.

Bastardo has been discussed in the comments as a possible non-tender. I really don’t see it, unless he truly hurt Rube’s feelings over Biogenesis or something. Otherwise, he’s a real MLB bullpen arm, and there’s no reason not to keep him.

Frandsen is a bench guy who can hit a little and he will make almost nothing in 2014, even if he goes all the way to arbitration and wins. Kendrick is your #3 or #4 starter next year. In a perfect world, you wouldn’t need to keep a questionable arm like him, but there’s no depth to let him go and he’s been very durable, if nothing else. And Revere is a no-brainer – he will be tendered.

I predict five tendered contracts. In an ideal world it would be two, Bastardo and Revere, but as we all know, the 2014 Phillies will be far from ideal.

General Discussion – Week of 11-18-2013

Last week I tried to predict/propose something and it totally backfired and like the opposite thing happened. This week’s prediction? Ryan Howard and Jonathan Papelbon will both not be traded.

General Discussion – Week of 11-11-2013 – “I’m The GM? Rad!” Edition

(Note – as I typed this, the Phillies signed Marlon Byrd. I’m not changing it. I don’t even acknowledge Marlon Byrd.)

So because all of you were clamoring for it, (I’m sure you were in secret), I’ll float my off-season plan here.

First, and foremost – Break the bank for Masahiro Tanaka, (Amaro seemed to nod in that direction yesterday, but of course it may have just been general talk about Japanese players and not a nod toward Tanaka himself). I know some of this will come down to budget, but any posting fee would be somewhat mitigated by merch sales and who knows how much mitigated by TV deal leverage. Plus I bet Morimoto names a dish after Amaro if he signs Tanaka – maybe his “Yasai Ramen” could become the “NiceSign Ruben”. I would eat that. AFL Update – 11-8-2013

I’m short on time today and so I’ll leave the analysis to you all.

A note that Your Peoria Javelinas will be on MLB Network tomorrow night at 8pm EST, as they visit Surprise. The game’s being televised as they test the MLB replay system for next year. I’ve been watching parts of the games this week, and I’m hopeful we’ll get to see some of our guys on that big stage. Cam Rupp has played in two straight, so if he’s off today, he could be back tomorrow, and both outfielders have been playing plenty. Giles and Wright both have been off a couple days, so they’re in the mix if they don’t throw tonight, but I would guess we won’t see Nesseth or Simon, as they both threw yesterday and have been spread out to at least two days between outings all season.

Here’s the link for the Phils’ Off-Season League stats. Freddy Galvis is tearing it up. He’s got four multi-hit games and five XBH in his last six contests.

General Discussion – Week of 11-4-2013

A bunch of QOs have been announced, options are being declined and accepted all over the place. Soon we’ll have Full Blown Free Agency, Non-Tenders and the Winter Meetings. The Hot Stove is about to be turned up to high, and I for one look forward to making Jiffy Pop with the overwhelmed steam pouring out of Ruben Amaro’s ears.

Hey, remember when people used to make Jiffy Pop on the stove? That’s what I was referencing there. Do they still make that kind?

AFL Update – 11-1-2013

So we’re about half way through the AFL season, and we’ve finally got our first Phillies’ AFL home run. Cameron Rupp “went yard” (as the kids say) on Tuesday. He’s been the healthiest position player thus far, with Kelly Dugan gone with turf toe, Aaron Altherr missing a lot of time with a hand injury, and Cam Perkins now possibly shelved after taking a fastball (“only” 89mph) to the helmet, per a Twitter report from @JoshOrensteinTM from Trackman.dk.

As for hurlers, Ken Giles has gotten nine outs and allowed 12 baserunners in his last three outings. Mike Nesseth got lit up yesterday, while Kyle Simon had another good outing earlier in the week before giving up a run yesterday. Austin Wright also with a mixed bag of a week – a bad outing last Friday, followed up with a clean inning with two Ks yesterday.

Here’s the link for the Phils’ Off-Season League stats. Cesar Hernandez has gone deep twice now, and is OPSing near .850. Jesus Manuel Chavez seems to be getting use, at least sometimes, as a lefty specialist. He’s faced a couple more LHB than RHB and he’s been used for less than an inning a handful of times. In total, he’s struck out seven and walked just one in 7.2IP.

General Discussion – Week of 10-28-2013

It all comes down to this. The drama is palpable. The intrigue undeniable. Yes, there’s just three possible games left, and if I take two out of three, I’ll be the undisputed Connect Four champion of my household. BOOM!

Also, something about the World Series, I guess.

AFL Update – 10-24-2013

Kenny Giles day took a decidedly downward turn around the eight inning of the game on October 19, when he was called upon to pitch to hitters and attempt to retire them. He was unable to do the latter. At all. Just saw his results from today, and they were ok, I guess. No runs, a walk, a hit and 2Ks in his first (and likely only), inning. Aaron Altherr has not appeared in a game since the 16th. I’m wondering is he’s still nursing that hand injury he had early on.

Cam Rupp has continued to hit, and injury replacement Cam Perkins has a couple knocks. Cam those guys hit? They certainly Cam. Cam, Cam. (Apologies to any Marilyn Monroe fans out there).

Kyle Simon has been pitching well so far, allowing just four baserunners in 5.1IP, and Austin Wright has two scoreless outings since his initial two scoreful outings. And finally, Mike Nesseth continues to exist, throwing baseballs with varying success. Hashtag analysis.

Here’s the link for the Phils’ Off-Season League stats. Of note there – Cesar Hernandez has been hitting some and taking some time in center field for Los Bravos de Margarita. Severino Gonzalez walked three men in his two innings of work, (wait, he did what???), and apparently Rodrigo Lopez is associated with the Phillies still. Somehow.

General Discussion – Week of 10-21-2013 – World Series Envydition

Couldn’t be happier for the two teams in the World Series right now.

That was totally sarcastic.
