The Phillies selected Kevin Munson out of the Diamondbacks system in the Rule 5 draft. Munson has been a reliever since he was drafted in 2010, he shows a fastball in the low 90’s that can touch higher, and he pairs that with a hard slider. He has had some control problems over his career with a 4.26 BB/9 in AA this year, but he finished the year with a 2.74 BB/9 in AAA. Across the two levels Munson struck out 10.9/9. He has good ground ball tendencies as well and has a good chance to stick in the Phillies bullpen all year.
The Mets selected AA RHP Seth Rosin from the Phillies. Rosin is a big strong pitcher with a 3 pitch mix that is more average than overpowering. However, he has a good feel in the zone and generates a ton of ground balls. The Mets will likely switch Rosin back to the bullpen where the fastball could play more plus and the pitch mix will allow him to keep hitters off balance. He profiles more as a middle reliever but it could play up a lot more. The groundball tendencies and big frame are reminiscent of former Phillies Rule 5 pick David Herndon. There is a good chance Rosin sticks all year with the Mets.
The Red Sox selected Jonathan Roof in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Roof is now permanent property of Red Sox (for the cost of $12,500). Roof played across two levels for the Phillies in 2013 and is more an org filler at this point in his career.
Munson looks like a decent pickup but losing Rosin sucks.

I agree they have so many stiffs on the 40 man roster why didn’t they protect Rosin ?

Losing Rosin does suck and the awfulness that was the 2nd Pence trade is revisited and made worse by his loss — not that Rosin was the key to the deal, but we only have Tommy Joseph (+$25,000) left; Schierholtz had a good season in Chicago, and it looks like Rosin has a chance to stick with the Mets. Having said that, think of it like this: would you have traded Rosin for Munson, because that is in effect what happened. Munson at least looks like he has more upside. FWIW, Jim Callis liked Munson a lot, adding: Control/command can be erratic, but can show plus fastball and slider.

I feel like Amaro has completely Munsoned this entire organization, setting the whole thing back 4-7 years….if we’re lucky. Man, I can’t stand that guy.

Mets flipped Rosin to the Dodgers for a PTBNL.

This is actually a positive development. Less of a chance that he sticks with the, win-now, bottomless wallet Dodgers for a year than with the Mets. Better than 65 percent chance that he is returned during ST

Why couldn’t Phillies make this deal themselves prior to the draft?

They could have done so before the 40-man deadline, but unless you really value someone the Dodgers aren’t going to protect, and they value your player in kind, it’s not really a logical move for either team, since each player may be available in the Rule 5 draft for just some cash.

Not at all true. Dealing directly with the Phillies, the Dodgers can send Rosin to the minors. The Phillies have a guy in return, whom they can keep in the minors. As it is, the Phillies have nothing but an unneeded $50K.

So phils only picked one?

They only had one roster spot available; that was all they could do.

Why Phillies still have Horst, Stutes, Savery, and even Valle and Garcia taking up roster spots is annoying.
I suppose I suffer from the newer must be better philosophy but I really see no benefit in Horst or Stutes.
Unfortunate that Rosin was chosen. I won’t redo the ‘protection’ thread, but I feel he has realy value since there is still a chance he’d be a backend starter. Very rarely do Rule5 guys fit that profile.
Munson seems like an OK pick. Since Phillies ‘won’ another pick, why not take Kahnle or Moran also. What a ‘wasted’ grievance. Plan for one of them to stick in the bullpen and the other goes back. Phillies are going to need that roster spot early on anyway.

I tend to agree – I can’t understand why you’d want to waste a roster spot on Horst. Rosin has more value than Horst for the reasons you mentioned.

I hope the Dodgers do not have a need for Rosin and he is offered back.
Though Munson looks like a middle ining guy and a keeper.
Is he another David Herndon?

Phillies sign some stiff named Fernando Fernandez with a 4.89 era at Tampa Bay in 2013 . wasn’t this guy also named Fauisto Carmona ? This move will surely get some of the 500,000 fans they lost back to Senior Citizens Bank Park .

Sorry its Roberto Hernandez but he is still a STIFF. His stats are HORRIBLE and we are paying him 4.5 M . Rube should be fired today with Paul Holmgren as the two worst GM’s in baseball and Hockey.

Im not opposed to the signing at all…they needed a 5th starter for a year. Hopefully after next year Biddle will be able to step in or if they draft a college pitcher with the #7 pick, he could step in. Look at the market for pitchers, what the signed guys got and what the unsigned guys are asking for and this really isn’t a bad signing. There were very limited options we could get on a 1 yr low dollar amount deal. Atleast Amaro didn’t stick to his MO of offering an extra year and a vesting option.
An interesting wrinkle is that he was actually used in relief in TB in september last year. The article on Crashburn talks about his splits, and he is actually very effective against RH batters, for his career and last year. Basically I see this as an insurance signing, we still have unknown (MAG) and unproven (Pettibone) starters, so if they falter Hernandez can start. If they flourish, Hernandez could be an effective reliever…I like the flexibility.

Just depressing. I keep refreshing “mlbtraderumors.com” to see if the Phils made a big deal, BUT Nothing!!!! Can Amaro really think this team will contend?

I get sick SICK to my stomach to even think about the Hunter Pence trade. Trading Jonathan Singleton the top 1st base prospect in the game, Jarred Cosart, and Domingo Santana for Pence was Just stupid. Then Amaro goes and trades him for almost nothing Tommy Joseph and Seth Rosin makes ZERO sense. So for Hunter Pence The Astros get all that. While we get a broken catcher. I truley believe with all my heart Amaro has no clue what he is doing. After giving up all those prospects why did Amaro even trade Hunter Pence? I know he was going to be a FA but If he believed the Phils could contend why did he trade him? We are stuck now still looking for a RH bat when we paid a heavy price to get one then trade him for nothing. If Amaro wanted us to contend wouldnt we be much better off with Hunter Pence than Marlon Bryd? If Amaro wanted the Phils to give it one more go with the old core He should not have traded Hunter Pence. Even if he did he should have got way way more than a busted catcher. I know he wasnt busted at the time. Mets got Zack Wheeler for Carlos Beltran. It boggles my mind and makes me angry to think about.

I agree that they have way too much. I have said this before but Santana will be the biggest loss in that deal. With that being said was Pence really THAT big of a loss? He is more of a complementary piece and with what the phillies have they don’t need a complimentary piece they need an actual piece. Also we would have had to pay him A LOT of money that he just isn’t worth.

Re: Santana….His K rate of nearly 30% will severly hurt his chances for success eventually if he doesn’t cut it in half..

Obviously the Dodgers wanted Rosin. They had organized with the Mets to pick him early so he was available and not off the board by the time LA picked. You don’t do that unless you want someone in a pretty big way. A loss for us but good for him.

And RAJ couldn’t have given LA the same deal, freeing a roster space for us to use the round 7 pick?

Agreed on the getting the PTNL for Rosin, but it would not have saved us a 40 man roster space since Rosin was not protected.
