Phils Sign Clete Thomas

The Phillies announced that they signed 30 year old OF Clete Thomas to a minor league deal today with an invite to major league Spring Training.  Thomas was originally a 6th round pick of the Tigers in the 2005 draft and has spent parts of four seasons in the majors, most recently in 2013 with the Twins where he hit .214 with 4HR and 13RBI in 290 AB’s.  He spent part of last season with AAA Rochester where he hit .296 with 9HR and 25RBI in 125 AB’s.

It’s looking like a crowded Lehigh Valley outfield as is typical this time of year.  Pitchers and catchers report February 12th (89 days…not like I am counting).

    1. Possibly true, but I doubt Thomas plays in Philadelphia. Susdorf is really a fatally flawed player, however. He is adequate, at best, as a corner OF, has very little speed, virtually no HR power. That combination is lethal to a corner OF. He does hit very well for average and obp, but for a slow, not-plus-fielding corner OF, that isn’t nearly enough to start in the bigs. His ceiling is 5th OF/PH and his utility in that role is undermined by the inability to play CF.

      1. Well said. Yes really nothing susdorf offers is attractive to a ML manager, good organizational player with a future in coaching but that’s about it.

  1. Lead the Twins last year in Games–OF. That was the Minneapolis newspaper headline about the move, “OF Games Leader to Phillies.” If that’s the best thing you can say about a guy…

  2. If Clete Thomas rates his own article as a minor league signing, does not err…. What’s his name-the guy they signed yesterday-deserve the same?
