Slow news day for the Phillies, so let’s talk about some minor league news. Hmm…nothing there either. Oh well…just the games then.
Cesar Hernandez with his 30th steal. Not bad for missing about 5 weeks between the bigs and injuries. Three hits a piece for Jiwan James and Harold Martinez, and two each for Altherr and Perkins. Two total hits for The Lakewood Blueclaws spoils at fine performance from Ramon Ovideo – 2R 6H 2BB and 7K in 5IP. A similar looking effort for Feliberto Sanchez in the GCL, 1R 5H 1BB and 7K, also in 5IP – he’s shown some better peripherals in August – 11K and 5BB in 15 IP. We’ll see if he can close out his year on a high note. Not a great night from Mitch Gueller – gave up four runs on 10 hits in four innings.
And finally, a disappointing game from JP Crawford – 0-3 with a K. I don’t know, folks, he might never get promoted if he keeps performing like that.

Congrats to JP, Lakewood…..

Lakewood’s offense- 2 hits, 0 BB, 16 Ks. Crawford might already be the best hitter in that lineup. I wonder if Mora goes back to Williamsport or shifts to 2B. He’s actually been hot lately.
Did I see Brad or Matt in one of the comment sections say that Gueller’s fastball is not impressing this year? Or is my mind making that up?

I don’t think that was me, but I think I remember seeing that, too.

Does anyone have any info on Gregorio Santos? I see that he’s 20 and in his 3rd year in the DSL, which doesn’t make him much of a prospect. Still, with the year he’s had (9-0, 1.33 ERA), do you send him to Lakewood in 2014 to see how he handles a full season?

Why was C. Hernandez PH for his last AB? Not injured again, I hope.

How about a special “not losing aggression ” award for the Dominican’s Emmanuel Salas (who I don’t recall as having been over the Mendoza line in Batting Average for the season, yet has played about every game in RF, looks like a good Range Factor, but I digress).
Game (above ) performance:
Caught stealing at 2B and Home Plate, and picked off at 3B.

Cesar Hernandez, I liken him to a poor man’s Jose Altuve of the ‘Stros.
And what has got into Harold!
Apparently he has his mind set on that Reading third base job in 2014.

Nice crop of third basemen in the system next year:
AAA — Franco
AA — HMart
A+ — Walding
A — Zach Green

Definitely. So that makes a legit prospect manning third at every A-level. Not bad.

Sure. But do any of them have a nickname as cool as “Moose?”

Trey Williams and Logan Pierce might have something to say about that. Both were reasonably hyped after the draft as well.

Good call, but am I wrong in thinking he’s very unlikely to stick at third?

Walding and HMart, neither has been to impressive. Zach Green is showing some potential

is it me or does freddy galvis always go 2 for 4 but hi BA always stays around .260?

He matches those with 0 hit games generally

I have noticed a similar phenomenon. I think it’s because I really want Galvis to do well, and so my brain remembers his good games. However, there’s no getting around the fact he’s having a bad year with the bat, at an age-appropriate level.

Look at Cozen’s numbers after playing exactly 50 games in GCL and NYP. Except for increase in runs scored this year they are remarkably similar.

Hey Larry M, or Matt,(Or anyone else)
Have either of you looked at minor league strikeout/walk ratio vs prospects 20 or so years ago. It seems like up and down a lineup players strike out more than I ever remember. Is a new way being taught or a new baseball culture? Or is it the same?

goes back to drafting ‘baseball’ players who have good contact approach (ie see cardinals system) vs draft guys who look the part in uniform who don’t have an approach at plate.

Wow! Just saw that Carman got sent to Williamsport. Lets see…..Justin Dalles goes to Lakewood and goes 20 for 63 (.317) and he gets sent to AA. Carman goes 19 for 60 (.311) in a split season where he misses over 8 weeks due to a broken finger, and he gets sent down to Williamsport and Lino moves up (and is 0 for 6 and stolen on twice in two starts). Yeah……the beat goes on. If I remember right, Dalles was one of Jordan’s signs before he left Baltimore. Hmmmm.

Only good thing I see in that is that Numata is on the bench.

Looks to me like Herlis Rodriguez also DH’ed and batted first in the GCL game, as per above, so maybe he is back down.

It was a game from August 1st that was suspended in after the top of the 4th with the score tied at 2. Rodriguez was replaced in the 5th because he was DHing and didn’t need to be replaced until his AB came up.

i know this is in the wrong thread, but travis d’arnaud was called up by the mets. i don’t regret the halladay trade like i do the pence one, but d’arnaud would be a nice successor to chooch. 😦

@ John, get a clue. I don’t think you can do any better. Those kids are trying their best and just enjoying playing baseball.

You get a clue. You take a backup catcher that’s playing every 3rd or 4th game and still hits .311 and you move him down so you can bring up a kid hitting .240 in the NYP league. Somebody is definitely clueless, but its not me.
