Tyler Cloyd has been a different pitcher in July and August – 39H and 6 BB in 52.1 IP for a WHIP of 0.86, plus a respectable 36K. And how about this – 11 of his hits and one of the walks were in his first start of July. So since that time, he’s gone 47 innings, allowing just 28H and 5BB, for a WHIP of 0.70. He went the distance last night, striking out 7 and allowing just 3 hits. With John Lannan out, and a need for a starter on 8-20, Cloyd could be the man for the job. However, if Pettibone only needs the one rehab start tonight, (possible since they kept him up north rather than sending him to CLR or GCL), his turn would fall on the 20th, and Cloyd may be left out. Not for lack of recent results on his part.
Maikel Franco 2-2 with a walk. Harold Martinez 3-6 with 2 doubles in the CLR doubleheader. Nice job by Luis Paulino and his bullpen mates to shut out Daytona. Watch out for Delvi Francisco’s line for Lakewood – it burns the eyes. And two new names in the GCL bullpen – Jordan Elliott and Chris Motta. I will guess these were UDFA signings – they’re both the right age and have no prior pro experience.
Here’s the affiliate Scoreboard from MiLB.

Any chance Harold Martinez is able to salvage his chances as a prospect, and maybe end up as a bench player in the bigs? Something seems to be clicking, and I know he was a fairly early draft pick.
Larry Greene is such a major disappointment, and I’d actually like to see the organization actually admit their mistake and cut ties this offseason. His mantra might as well be the same as Peter Gibbons in Office Space, “it’s not that I’m lazy, it’s that I just don’t care.”
LikeLike
What’s the point of cutting him loose? Just because they can? That’s dumb reasoning.
LikeLike
Not really, because laziness and a bad attitude aren’t recipes for a good clubhouse environment. Having played sports growing up, bad locker room and club house chemistry can, and usually does, drag down everyone else’s performance and morale.
I know the goal at these levels is individual development, but when it inhibits other players it’s an issue. I don’t know if this is the case, but LGJ has come into camp out of shape 2 years in a row, has reported laziness and motivational issues, and is way behind where he should be developmentally.
Is that good enough reasoning?

Looking forward to seeing HMart at Reading next season ematusko. He’s batting .304 with a .358 OBP in the 2nd half, OPSing .792. His BB rate is up significantly and his K rate is down. So much to like about his 2nd half as he certainly has seemed to turn a corner. Hopefully he could finish strong
LikeLike
That’s an improvement, but an OPS of .792 is no big deal for a guy his age who will make it to the bigs. A future major leaguer should be hitting better than that. His problem as a utility guy is that he doesn’t play a lot of positions well. The Phillies aren’t hurting for guys who can play 3B well and hit a heck of a lot better than HMart is hitting. His bat is not better than 4th among our minor league 3b and his glove doesn’t stand out. For comparison, Walding is 2+ years younger, just a level behind him, has a better glove, and is regarded as a disappointment. Still, one has to rank Walding as our #4 3B prospect ahead of HMart. Perhaps HMart puts it together for a full season at Reading, but as of today, he really doesn’t count as a prospect. We have enough data that draft position really doesn’t matter at all in evaluating him. He is a classic case of a guy who never adjusted well to the wood bats. Even his last year in college was a disappointment.

Heck I may even have Willie Carmona ahead of him at 3rd, though Willies has only played 22 games at third.
LikeLike
Carmona is one hell of a 3rd baseman. Should be playing ahead of Walding IMO, but that’s never going to happen in this organization.
LikeLike
Carmona is 1.5 years older than Walding. He’s repeating Lakewood. In his first go around, he hit worse than Walding is now.
LikeLike
I don’t care about 1.5 years. Walding is performing poorer than he did last year at Williamsport while Carmona is much improved. I have seen both play, and I would take Carmona over Walding any day. He’s plays much more maturely and he’s playing better………..end of story. Ultimately, the game is about performance. Way too much money gets spent in this game on “potential” that never materializes.
LikeLike
Nor in any organization. I’m not going to try to convince you that you are incorrect in believing that only “performance” (as narrowly defined by you) matters, and that age/level and scouting reports (“potential”) don’t matter, but your opinion is shared by zero professional baseball organizations, and, almost certainly, by zero persons employed by such organizations with a player development/evaluation role.
LikeLike
Walding was unimpressive last year and even more so this year. Carmona is lighting it up at Lakewood, but he’s being used as a DH in a league where, except in the Lowe minors, there is no DH. He played for a good team at the college level, and IMO, is way more than 1.5 years ahead of Walding in his playing level. It’s obvious that this organization is not concerned about performance. Every team they have is in the middle of the pack or worse at every level from the GCL to the big league team. Maybe they should look at performance a little more. Just my opinion.
LikeLike
Performance matters…in context.
Context: Carmona is repeating Lakewood, is a year old for that level, is unlikely to stick at third base, has limited power, average BB/K, and a .370 BABIP.
LikeLike
Since when does a .770 OPS for a 22-year old at Lakewood count as lighting it up. You say the 1.5 years age gap should mean nothing, yet when Carmona was at Lakewood last year, still a half year older than Walding is now, his numbers stank. So an extra year of age did make quite a difference. Carmona seems to be regarded as organizational filler by the Phillies. College players who are well thought of by the Phillies do not start their professional career in the GCL. Carmona had great ‘production’ there, as well. But when he had his age-appropriate shot (for a college guy) at Lakewood, the performance was meh.

Walding stank at Williamsport, and now he’s stinking at Lakewood……no improvement……period!

Larry Greene and Perci Garner, only 2 names you need to say to justify Amaro loosing his job. Someone needs to answer for all the major blunders.

If you think that missing on a pair of draft picks is the call breaking point for a job (especially a late 1st and 3rd round pick) then you need to reevaluate the draft as a whole. Not to say they were great picks, and we can’t truly give up on Garner until he ends up in the bullpen where most people thought he should have started.

Yeah! Especially those major blunders like Greg Golson, Joe Savery or Anthony Hewitt. Oh what? Those weren’t under Amaro but under Pat Gillick? Well then, nevermind!

So you fire Amaro for drafting, then highly rated, Larry Greene and Perci Garner in the Compensation and 2nd rounds.
When Amaro fights his dismissal, does he get to say:
He signed Franco for 100K?
He drafted the lower rated Biddle in the 1st?
He drafted Cody As he in the 5th round in 2011, and he is already in the Majors?
Come on man. Every GM misses on draft picks and amateur signings. Every team drafts Tyler Greene’s and Anthony Hewitt’s, every year.

had the chance to check out the lehigh valley game last night. Gillies had two fantastic defensive plays in the outfield last night. one a diving catch to short left/center that I thought for sure was a base hit off the bat. he broke about as perfectly to the ball a you can and totally laid out to rob the batter of a hit. the second play was a deep shot to center that he had to run back on to catch with his back turned, glove extended. galvis (unsurprisingly) also made a couple really stand-out plays and both helped cloyd quite a bit. cloyd really looked comfortable and seemed to be locating his pitches, staying in pitchers counts and limiting his base runners. the only hard hit ball was the one-run homer. i hope the kid gets another sniff at the bigs this fall to see how much he can help the team next year.
i don’t recall being that impressed with Gillies at-bats, though the only time I noticed him on base, he seemed to be giving the opposing pitcher fits with the threat to steal (which he never did).

Top 5 by wRC+ for 20 and 21 year olds in AA with at least 150 PAs:
Javier Baez (165) (10)
Xander Bogaerts (153) (4)
Christian Yelich (153) (8)
Michael Franco (151) (NR)
Miguel Sano (149) (3)
First number is wRC+, second is their ranking in BA’s midseason top 50.
There are legitimate concerns about Franco’s swing and approach, but let’s not forget that his performance this year puts him in elite company.

If they want him to work on certain pitches or control it is useful for him to get regular work as a starter until he gets to higher levels.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Cloyd recalled to take the place of Lannan, or if that is going to be Pettibone’s job, then Kendrick. Kyle has struggled since the beginning of July, allowing 55 hits in 36 innings, 9 of which were home runs. If he is not injured, he should be sent back to AAA to figure it out.

No ML prospects eh? Not any A+ ones, but Morgan and Biddle will almost certainly make it to the pros. Some of these guys will be relievers. The jury is still out on a lot of the younger guys. I get your point, but prone to exaggeration much?

Don’t think I’m exaggerating when their are no can’t miss non injured prospects in AAA or AA. Morgan was injured , Biddle is a mystery aside from his early illness., Look at the pitchers they marched into Philly this year and evaluate their performance. If your definition of ML prospect is 2014 help then it is a very limited number. Yes pitching is down as a whole but Watson, Gueller, Gonzalez, Hanson, Giles, Rosin, and Mecias are not non-factors

Although a number of those are shut down due to injury. Morgan’s shoulder still a question. Biddle is the best, but has looked very mortal this year with games when he just totally craters and can’t get out of the second inning. I think he is nursing an injury. I was at the game when Biddle totally imploded in the second inning. By the time he left the game, he looked like he could barely throw the ball, no exaggeration. I think he had 2 other games where he didn’t escape the first inning and exited on pitch count. His stuff has seemed to be down a bit the second half of this season. Perhaps he’s just tired, but something doesn’t seem right about him. Gueller’s year has to be viewed as disappointing.

Yes. I also think he had a blister a week or so ago (he was looking at his hand a lot during the control-problem games). He is gradually feeling better and stronger.
People need to calm down and stop obsessing, from a distance, about minor slumps for any pitcher (let alone hitters).
This week he was throwing his fastball for more velocity and with better location than in over a month, and nobody at this site noticed!

I’m not at all sure that the three are still top prospects. I think we have two injured pitchers and one very erratic one in that grouping. Biddle this season has looked like a #3 starter in the bigs. Just too many really bad games when he has no idea where the ball is going. Watson is shut down and Morgan is trying to work his way back from a bad shoulder. Biddle started the year with a really dominant April, but has struggled a bit since then.

I’m not going to knock a guy too much for getting hurt unless it’s going to be a long-term thing. Morgan’s back and shutting down Watson seemed to be out of an abundance of caution.

Toronto signed Lizardo for $250k near the end of July when he turned 16. I haven’t seen any rumors about the 3 other names. As all 3 of those players you named turned 16 prior to July 2nd they have been eligible to be signed since the start of this signing period so there’s not really any ‘waiting for them to turn 16’ reason they’d drag into August. There could be questions about age that hasn’t been divulged (sometimes MLB will clear a player because they can’t conclusively prove they are lying about their age, but that lack of certainty alters the perception by scouts of that player)
It’s also possible that teams weren’t as high on them as Jonathan Mayo or Ben Badler had them ranked and used their bonus money on other players.

Nationals have signed Dominican third baseman Anderson Franco for $900K, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America. Badler had ranked Franco as the No. 29 prospect in this year’s crop of July 2 international free agents, and MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez ranked him 16th.
The 6’1″, 185-pound Franco became eligible to sign today — his 16th birthday. Badler writes that Franco’s best tools are his raw power and strong arm, adding that he’s shown the ability to be a strong defender at third base. Sanchez writes that Franco has drawn praise for his bat speed, footwork at third base and power displays in batting practice. Some scouts, according to Sanchez, believe Franco to be a sleeper who could ultimately end up as the best player from this year’s class. Detractors worry about his pitch recognition and a swing that can get long at times.
