Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

Lehigh Valley ended their season long ten game road trip with a 5-4 loss to Gwinnett on Monday, but all in all had a successful trip ending up 6-4.  After an off day on Tuesday, the ‘Pigs open a short three game homestand against Syracuse on Wednesday, before heading up the Northeast Extension for two against Scranton over the weekend.  On the year, Lehigh Valley is 63-61 and in 4th place of the Northern Division of the International League, 4 games behind division leading Rochester, and just 1.5 games behind Buffalo in the wild card race.

‘Pigs Prospects:Adam Morgan is 1-1 with a 1.33 ERA in his 5 starts since coming off the DL which is quite impressive except for considering the fact that he has thrown just 20.1innings in those 5 starts(4IP per start).  Morgan has been on a 75-85 pitch count since his return and while he has shown effectiveness at times, has run his pitch count up pretty quickly in each of his starts.

Cesar Hernandez–Not much to report on Hernandez who has been limited to one pinch hit appearance (0-1) and one pinch running appearance over the last three weeks because of his nagging wrist injury. As a whole, a solid season where he is hitting .309 and is among the league leaders in stolen bases, however the excitement has quelled as a result of the recent inaction.

Tyson Gillies  has been very hot over the last three games, going 5-11 with 5 runs scored, however in the 17 games prior, Gillies was hitting just .172.  Since his return to AAA on July 1 (35 games, Gillies is hitting .242.  On the year for Lehigh Valley, Gillies is at .217/.282/.323 with 3HR 7RBI and 11SB, in approaching 200 AB’s. Perhaps most problematic is the .079 average with RISP. Absent on occasional miscue, Gillies defense has been good and he leads the team in OF assists with 7.

Tyler Cloyd threw a complete game in his last start against Charlotte and is 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA and .186 opp. avg. in his last six starts, suggesting he has really come around from the mid season malaise he was caught in. On the year the stats do not look good as CLoyd is at 4-9 with a 5.25ERA in his 17 starts. The opposition is hitting .286 against him during his AAA starts. Still, using the adage of “what have you done for me lately”…Cloyd is pitching much better and the focus should be on a potential September callup.

Next Week: Rupp, Aumont, Galvis

News and Notes: With just a 15-16 record as a team over the last 31 games, Lehigh Valley starters were 10-8 with a 2.27ERA during that same time period.

–RP Mauricio Robles currently has an 11 inning scoreless streak during which he has given up just 3 hits over that 9 game span.  The problem continues to be his control, as he has given up 8BB in those 11innings.

Pete Orr has tied his career high with his current 12 game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .400.

Cody Overbeck has hit safely in 20 of his last 21 games (.350) and has 4HR and 16RBI during that time period.

–SP David Buchanan has now won each of his AAA starts, going 7 innings in each and allowing just 2ER in 14 innings of work.

‘Pigs leaders(thru Monday): Hitting: Cody Asche is 4th in hits(119), 10th in slg (.485); and 5th in RBI’s(68); Cody Overbeck is 5th in doubles(29), 3rd in strikeouts(125), 8th in slg (.490) and 8th in HR (19); Cesar Hernandez leads the eleague in triples(8), 5th in avg. (310) and is 6th in SB’s(29); Pete Orr is 6th in triples(5); Josh Fields is 10th in avg. (.298)

Pitching: Ethan Martin is 2nd in wins(11), allowed the 2nd most walks(67), and is 6th in strikeouts(107) ; Tyler Cloyd has the 7th most losses (9), and 2nd most HR allowed(18).

Probables: Wed: Cloyd; Thur: Buchanan; Fri: Smith; Sat: Morgan

Transactions: None

      1. Any stats, news, updates, his in an original Philly, drafted by the club, let’s report on him. His name is hardly ever mentioned.

        1. I am so, so tired of people constantly talking up Susdorf here like he’s the second coming of Jesus. He had a chance in the majors, got his cup of coffee, and wasn’t very good! Let me say that again. He. Is. Not. Good. I don’t care if he’s a local kid or not, he had his chance and that’s all his skills really deserve, one chance. Please stop acting like he’s a legitimate major league player.

  1. I hope to see Overbeck get his first major league PA when rosters expand next month. I think he’s earned a few ABs.

  2. Probably wont happen because Michael Young is still on the team. But agree would like to see both Overbeck and Susdorf get a few more at bats. May be there only cups of coffee.

  3. Really am confused, Watching susdorf play at lhv, He cant run, is a bad outfielder, has no arm, no power, what good is he, do you really think he is a big league player? Very confused, really how anyone can want him on a this team. as bad as nix was he is more valuable than a susdorf, at least he can field and has some power, Matt is it just me, am i that stupid? or do people just fall in love with a non prospect and dont stop. before i would waste at bats on susdorf, i would let franco get his feet wet, cant hurt him. or dugan,

    1. My only point of contention is that no one is calling for Susdorf to start opening day next year, just to get a few AB’s after pouring a big part of his life and effort into the Phillies minor leagues.

      1. Lots of players have poured just as much time if not more into the Phillies minor league organizations: Cody Overbeck, Derrick Mitchell, Leandro Castro, B.J. Rosenberg, etc. Do they all get what amounts to a merit badge call-up as well? I like Susdorf, but it’s not like he’s Rudy or something.

Plus, didn’t he get a few ABs in Philly earlier this month?

        1. Susdorf has the 1 tool that plays in the big leagues, He CAN hit. We need offense and has shown very good ability to hit in a part time basis, We needs bats off the bench

          1. Having just a hit tool and no other tools is not very valuable. If he had some power to go with it, then we would be talking.

        2. Rosenberg has been in Philly multiple times. Derrick Mitchell deserves a cup of coffee. Overbeck maybe deserves one, too. But I’m not sure as much as the other two, just because Mitchell and Susdorf have been sent all around the minor league affiliates and stuck with the Phils anyways. Castro is still young enough and has enough tools that he should work on improving so he can STICK in the majors (probably as a 4th/5th OF).

It’s really a matter of rewarding loyalty and being a helpful person. It doesn’t cost the Phils anything. In fact, it might save them a bit of money because those guys make the minimum, whereas whoever else might take up the spot on the roster might make more. These aren’t people I would call up when we need a little extra something for a push into the playoffs. But players like these, good guys who stick with their organization, do deserve a cup of coffee. It fulfills a life-long dream and promotes good will between them and the club, who might be interested in retaining their services as a coach/ambassador/what have you.

        3. Nobody deserves anything. You get what you earn through your talents.

If Susdorf, Mitchell and Castro aren’t good enough, they should Not get to the major leagues.

      1. George, it seems to me that Susdorf is in the wrong league as I agree he can be a useful DH on a AL team.

        1. Not sure a team wants a singles hitter as a DH. That’s usually where AL teams plug in another power hitter.

Besides, even just taking his offense, I don’t think he is particularly good. I suppose he’d be pretty good if his career slash of .304/.370/.430 translated directly to the big leagues. But as a player without either power or speed, I feel like he would suffer from a larger gap in production between the majors and the minors than most.

          1. Put me in the what does it hurt to give a guy already on the 40 man a few AB’s in September xamp. Why not call up Susdorf and let him pinch hit a few times? I could personally care less either way but i can see why some folks would enjoy giving him a reward for a lot of good years toiling in the minors and being a good professional and teammate to all the younger guys coming up. Also, it should obviously be on a case by case basis. Should every guy get a September call up? No, and i never said that so your point of contention is absurd.

            1. I so agree, we are just talking about pinch hitting and a sept callup, that’s all for Susdorf. He only got 7 at bats and his 1 hit was a hard double off a good arm in Rick porcello of the tigers .

            2. I think you responded to the wrong person. I was just arguing against the idea that Susdorf would be a “useful DH.” I was also the one above that said he, among others, deserve a cup of coffee.

  4. Gregg, is Adam Morgan profiling more as a reliever than a starter right now? If he was turned into a reliever could he help in the backend of the bullpen?

  5. I dont think so. I coming back in 2014, the hope will be for Morgan to begin the year profiling as one of the top 2 Lehigh Valley starters and fully recovered from his injury

  6. I dont think so. Coming into 2014 I would think the Phils expect Morgan to certainly be in the top 3 in the Lehigh Valley rotation and to be fully recovered from his injury that occurred this year
