Lehigh Valley Game Report, 8/3

A very well played game by the Pigs.  Not too many prospects to report on and unfortunately, they were not posting pitch speeds so I have no info on that.  Cameron Rupp had the day off so he isn’t in the report.

Couresty of: NYPhilsManiac19

OFFENSE:

Galvis:
1) Hit a blast on a 2-1 pitch right down the LF line.  You knew it was way out off the bat.  It went all the way over the RF section of seats (about 5 rows that have a solid gap between them) and landed on the sidewalk that goes around the whole park.  It wasn’t a cheap one like the walk off he hit off Chapman.
2) K’d – fooled on a curve
3) Slapped the ball the other way over the SS’s head.  Nice piece of hitting.
4) K’d swinging again

Not sure if he isn’t happy about being back in AAA, but he did not interact at all with his teammates in warmups.  He stayed by himself.  He looked solid on defense.

Susdorf: (hey he was just in the majors, so he makes my report):
1) Hard grounder the other way but right at the 3B (5-3)
2) Soft liner to RF
3) 4-6 easy 2 hopper
4) K’d swinging

To his credit, he was the first one out signing autographs and working out prior to the game. I only mention this because it gives you an idea of his makeup, and his mentality in handling a setback.  As has been mentioned on this site, he offers so much more than Lance Nix.

Gillies:
1) Hit a long drive over the RF fence.  Impressive shot
2) Tried to bunt for a hit on the first pitch, but then K’d looking at a fastball down the middle.
3) Hard hit liner caught by CF in right-center gap
4) Another hard hit liner caught by CF

He hit the ball hard 3 of his 4 at-bats.  Nice to see him trying to bunt his way on too.  He played a solid CF.

In other notes:  Tyler Henson was finally handled by a AAA pitcher!  Josh Fields also looked good at the plate.

PITCHING:
Only two pitchers were needed to shut down the SWB Rail Riders who had a lineup with many players with MLB experience (Corey Patterson, David Adams, Dan Johnson, Our old buddy Randy Ruiz, Brendan Harris, and Bobby Wilson).

Tyler Cloyd: Pitched a solid game.  There was no radar gun posted, but I am pretty sure he wasn’t getting above 88 mph.
By inning:
1) Hard 4-3 groundout/K on a nice curve/4-3 high chopper
2) Hard single between 1B and 2B/K Looking on Fastball/popout to SS/6-4 FC- excellent lunging play by Galvis in shallow left-center- he had to set and fire hard to 2nd base for the force
3) Soft liner into shallow right caught by Orr (2B)/E-5 right through Henson/3-6-1 nicely started by Fields at 1B
4) Hard ground single between SS and 3rd/5-4-3 tailor made DP/Line single to right/weak roller between the plate and the mound(1-3)
5) High popout to 3rd/Walk/K on offspeed pitch/Hard line single to LF/K on curve in the dirt
6) Pop-up caught by Galvis behind the mound/Easy 6-3 groundout/HR by Dan Johson over fence in right-center/K swinging
7) Double in RC gap/BB/Swinging K on offspeed pitch/Lazy flyout to RF/Swinging K on low fastball.

Cloyd did a nice job pitching out the 7th inning jam, and really wasn’t in much trouble in any other inning.  Overall, a very solid performance.

BJ Rosenberg came on for the 8th and 9th and looked excellent.  He was clearly throwing much harder than Cloyd and they did not hit one ball out of the infield.  He did issue a 5 pitch walk in the 8th, but got the next batter to hit a cue shot to 2B for a 4-3 putout.  He ended the game freezing Bobby Wilson for a K looking.

  1. Thanks for the report. The LHV team looks more like the teams we’re used to seeing there, filled with minor league vets. Although that’s largely because of promotion/injuries.

I hope Galvis is getting something out of playing every day there. Seems like he’s been having some bad BABIP luck lately as he has only 5 Ks in his last 10 games. His BB rate is lower in AAA right now than it was in the majors this year.

  2. Phillies most important players at LHV right now are pitchers. Need to maintain starting depth (if even for trades) and certainly need someone from the bullpen to become a usuable MLB reliever.

Not many true prospects in the field with Susdorf and Castro on the fringe and Rupp maybe close behind. Gillies is healthy it appears but still not hitting enough after remaking his swing. He has one more year to figure it out. Ruf and Asche are already up. Other than Joseph and Gillies, I’d say LHV position prospects have done pretty well.

Galvis also has another option year, while Hernandez does not so I am not sure who the infield backup is next season. I think I mention this every post now, but rather than Henandez in CF, Phillies really need to see what he can do at SS. How much better is he than Frandsen? And could Phillies live with him for a few games at SS if Rollins is unavailable? Otherwise, Galvis AND Hernandez AND Frandsen may need to be kept for backup middle infield. Since Glavis has options why include another poor bat on the 25-man? I guess Hernandez could be the 5th OF with Mayberry the 4th OF but I’d much rather have a power lefty bat (like Schierholtz :).

  3. Cheap Home run off Chapman? When a little guy hits a bullet off a guy like Chapman I don’t think you can call it cheap. By the way, Asche sits tonight. Why? So what the kid is struggling, let him play through it. Lets see what he is made of. Its a total joke! Like they are going somewhere!

    1. Sometimes a kid is called up to the majors and everything speeds up. He doesn’t have time to stop and think. He has 3x as many errors as hits. He needs to sit out a game and just watch and think. The game will come to him when he has some time to think it through. If he was blazing hot, you don’t remove him but when he’s struggling, let him catch his breath.

    2. The “cheap” comment was meant in jest though it wouldn’t have been out of alot of parks. Agreed on Asche- he has struggled at every new level and then comes around quite nicely. I will say the Braves did throw a guy who is very tough on lefties (and has a funky delivery)

  4. Encouraging comments on Tyson Gillies. Makes me wonder whether his poor performance in AAA is partly just bad luck.

I know many people are ready to write him off at this point, but I’m not sure that’s the right move.

    1. I’m absolutely NOT writing him off. I’m convinced he could be a 5th outfielder at the ML level TODAY if the team needed him.

I think he’ll have a job in the Phillies outfield by the end of next season.,

    2. I’m just about ready to write him off. If he’s still around next year I’ll pay enough attention to see if he gets off to a hot start and just about destroys AAA. If he doesn’t, then it’s probably time to move on.

    3. I’m not buying that. It’s hard to hard-luck your way below the Mendoza line in 161 AB. He was also posting lesser numbers at Reading than he had the prior season. Last year was an encouraging one for Gillies; 2013 has been another step backward for him.

    4. He has just as much or more physical skills then Ben Revere. Bigger, stronger, better arm, maybe better glove and has more power, and he still is struggling in high minor ball. But then again a lot of players are in this scenario.

      Like

      1. Ben Revere has 70 contact skills and 75 speed. Put the two together and you have yourself a strong leadoff man. Right now, Gillies’ contact skills are a 40 and its’ killing him.

      2. Gillies glove is definitely worst than Revere’s right now (Gillies route running can be strange and horrible at times). But has Catch said the contact is the big difference in the two.

  5. Thanks for the report.

FWIW, my buddy was at the game. He knows his baseball but isn’t a Phillies fan and has no knowledge of our minor leaguers. He said the two things that stood out the most from either team was Galvis’ defense and Gillies bat
