    1. not in the minors yet. Phillies are still probably still trying to get all the visa paperwork together

      1. Thank you. This major league season has been awful, and I’m looking for something positive to come out of this season.

  1. “Tyler Tyler Buckley” from players page. Could this be correct? Impressive so far.

    1. another HR off a lefty.

      LHP
      69 PA, 9 HR, .381 BA/.420 OBP/.889 SLG/ 1.309 OPS, 14.5 K%, 5.8 BB%, .508 ISO

      RHP
      249 PA, 5 HR, .200 BA/.245 OBP/.328 SLG/.573 OPS, 36.1 K%, 5.2 BB%, .128 ISO

Maybe instead of looking/hoping for a Ruf/Howard platoon at 1B someone should give Hewitt a first basemen’s mitt and put him with Ryan Howard in a platoon.

  2. After a slow start, Dylan Cozens, the Phillies’ second-round pick last year, is starting to heat up at Williamsport. He hit .244 in his first 22 games, but was batting .296 with a .375 on-base percentage and .875 OPS in his last 17 games entering the weekend.
“I feel like I’ve been having kind of a rough year so far, but I don’t think it’s because the competition is too hard,” Cozens said. “I feel like I’ve been mentally struggling at the plate and beating myself up instead of them actually beating me. It’s pitch selection and swinging at pitches in the dirt, especially in counts I shouldn’t be swinging.”

    1. I’m a little concerned that they sat him down for 3 games after he yelled at the pitcher after getting a HBP. I wonder if his temper caused him to say something to his own coaches. That’s the red flag on him coming out of high school.

  3. I was looking through the Phillies Minor League Stats and wanted to see who has the best K/BB ratio. It turns out Manuel Gonzales, a 21 Y/O guy in the VSL has a 13 K/BB. A 21 year old, soon to be 22 year old should dominate in the VSL. The next guy on the list was Jesus Chavez. Chavez in a 19 year old lefty in the VSL who has been very impressive. 70 Ks in 71 IP to only 7 BBs. A 2.14 ERA with a WHIP just barely over 1. I assume we’ll see him in the states or at least they’ll give him a shot. He has a K/BB of 10. Then I looked at the bottom of the list. This is where STATs don’t tell the whole truth. Near the bottom is Braden Shull who has a zero (0 Ks and 8 BBs). But lower still is a kid named Ranger Suarez. He’s a 17 year old lefty from the VSL. He actually has the best K/BB ratio but it appears as 0. That’s because he’s yet to BB a single guy in 17 innings. He has 13 Ks. So his ratio is actually infinity. if he walked one guy he’d be tied for the tops in the Phillies sytem. I’ve got to believe Ranger will be in the GCL next year.

ps I’m trying to draw AndyB out with a piece on the LA teams.

    1. I’ve noticed over the years that it seems like guys in the VSL just don’t get many walks. I think it may be the approach given… but you look at guys who have come out of the league and advanced through the minors for the Phils like Cesar Hernandez, or Astudillo who played for the GCL last year and almost never struck out, but never walked either.

      VSL
      2012: 8.1 BB%, 15.2 K%
      2013: 8.1 BB%, 18.2 K%

      DSL:
      2012: 10.3 BB%, 18.4 K%
      2013: 10.5 BB%, 18.9 K%

It seems like the Venezuelan players are more ‘contact’ hitters and less likely to take a walk, preferring to put a ball in play.
