Around the System–Starting Pitching, Top Half

Lehigh Valley

Tyler Cloyd, 26, Phils 18th round pick in 2008 draft; 14 starts, 2-8 with a 6.19ERA; 75.2IP 95H 19BB 66K; 1.03GO/AO; .303 opp. avg., 2.2BB/7.8K per nine; 16 HR allowed; .267 vs. LH, .333 vs. RH, .400 with RISP; 1-1 with a 2.11 ERA in 4 July starts. Not a pretty body of work for Cloyd who has been very hittable and one of the league leaders in HR allowed.  On the bright side, he has been much better in July.

Ethan Martin, 24, Acquired from Dodgers in 2012; 21 starts; 11-5 with a 4.12 ERA; 115.2IP 94H 67BB 107K; 11HR allowed; 0.86 GO/AO; .229 opp. avg., 5.2BB/8.3K per nine; 1.39WHIP; .249 vs. LH, .211 vs. RH, .215 with RISP; 6-3 with a 3.14 ERA in 11 starts since June 1. Martin’s control was awful at the beginning of the year but has drastically improved and with it, have come very good results.  He has been excellent over the last two months and with a strong August he will likely find himself in Philly come 2014.

Adam Morgan, 23, Phils 3rd round pick in 2011 draft; 10 starts; 1-5 with a 4.44ERA; 48.2IP 52H 17BB 34K; 6HR allowed; .269 opp. avg., 1.41 WHIP; 3.1BB/6.3K per nine; .233 vs. LH, .280 vs. RH, .278 with RISP, Morgan has made two starts for Lehigh Valley since returning from his injury and has thrown 7 innings without yielding an earned run.  That said, he has thrown a ton of pitches in those starts and was less than sharp, which is to be expected after missing two months injured.

Greg Smith, 29, Signed as a free agent in 2013; 19 games (10 starts) between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 6-3 with a 2.38 ERA; 75.2IP 64H 17BB 31K; 1.00 GO/AO; .230 opp. avg., 2.0BB/3.7K per nine; 4 HR allowed; 1.07 WHIP. Smith has been Lehigh Valley’s most reliable starter and has been outstanding over the last month, going 2-0 with a 0.91 ERA in his last 5 starts.  With major league experience, certainly would have liked to see what Smith could do instead of Raul Valdes at the major league level.

Zach Miner, 31, Signed as a free agent in 2013; 26 games (11 starts); 5-6 with a 4.15ERA; 2 saves; 80.1IP 89h 26bb 53k; 5hr allowed; 1.70 GO/AO; .286 opp avg; 2.9BB/5.9K per nine; 1.43 WHIP; .283 vs. LH, .289 vs. RH, .274 with RISP. Miner has been asked to bounce back and forth all year between the rotation and the bullpen and has done an admirable job all in all based on the ever changing role.

Reading

Jesse Biddle, 21, Phils 1st round pick in 2010; 21 starts; 4-11 with a 3.89 ERA; 106.1IP 79H 60BB 117K; 11HR allowed; 0.83 GO/AO; .207 opp. avg; 5.1BB/9.9K per nine; 1.31 WHIP; .136 vs. LH, .226 vs. RH, .281 with RISP; 1-3 with a 7.11ERA in 5 July starts. Biddle has recent significant control problems that have led to a very poor July.  Lets hope it is an aberration rather than pattern.

David Buchanan, 24, Phils 7th round pick in 2010; 21 starts; 6-10 with a 4.63ERA; 124.1IP 136H 36BB 81K; 15HR allowed; 1.15 GO/AO; .283 opp. avg., 1.38 WHIP; 2.6BB/5.8K per nine; .243 vs. lefties; .318 vs. righties; .254 with RISP; 2-2 with a 4.45 ERA. Buchanan came back from a significant injury that occurred late in 2012 and has been durable this year, but inconsistent.

Mario Hollands, 24, Phils 10th round pick in 2010; 20 games (13 starts) between Clearwater and Reading; 5-2 with a 2.46 ERA; 91.1IP 88H 21BB 78K; 4HR allowed; 0.97 GO/AO; .254 opp. avg; 1.19 WHIP; 2.0BB/7.7K per nine; 1-1 with a 5.32 ERA in 6 games with Reading (3 starts). Hollands was pitching very well for Clearwater. The verdict is still out on him in Reading.

Seth Rosin, 24, Acquired from San Francisco in 2012;  21 starts; 9-4 with a 4.34 ERA; 114IP 107H 31BB 81K; 12HR allowed; 0.83 GO/AO; .247 opp. avg; 1.21 WHIP; 2.4BB/6.4K per nine; .262 vs. lh, .233 vs. RH, .337 with RISP; 3-0 with a 5.87 ERA in 5 July starts. Rosin may be starting to hit the wall after throwing no more than 89 innings in any previous year. Rosin has impressed this year more often than not with several excellent starts and is on course for Lehigh Valley’s 2014 rotation.

Austin Wright, 23, Phils 8th round pick in 2011 draft; 15 starts; 4-5 with a 6.01ERA; 73.1IP 67H 45BB 56K; 10HR allowed; 0.75 GO/AO; .246 opp. avg; 1.53WHIP; 5.5BB/6.8K per nine; .208 vs. LH, .260 vs. RH, .284 with RISP; 1-1 with a 4.45 ERA in 5 July starts. Wright has been a real enigma this year. After winning the 2012 FSL Pitcher of the Year award, Wright has been killed by lousy control and the home run ball. He seems to be coming around a bit, but the half dozen or so starts I have seen have not been pretty.

Clearwater

Perci Garner, 24, Phils 2nd round pick in 2010; 19 starts; 6-3 with a 3.88ERA; 109IP 118H 49BB 85K; 1.78 GO/AO; .282 opp. avg., 1.53WHIP; 4.0BB/7.0K per nine; .280 vs. LH, .283 vs. RH, .315 with RISP; 1-2 with a 4.66ERA in 5 July starts. This is Garner’s second full season in High A ball and results have not been much better than last year. In his 4th year of pro ball, Garner will be Rule 5 eligible this year.

Severino Gonzalez, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 19 games (8 starts); 5-3 with 1.89 ERA between Lakewood and CLearwater; 66.2IP 48H 12BB 79K; 4HR allowed; 0.73GO/AO; .202 opp. avg;  1.6BB/10.7K per 9; 0.90 WHIP.As a starter for CW: 4 starts; 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA; 22IP 10BB 20K. Gonzalez has put up truly eye popping numbers this year. Trying to contain the excitement until people around the league have seen him a second time.

Nick Hernandez, 25, Phils 12th round pick in 2009; 17 starts; 3-4 with a 4.97ERA; 87IP 99H 33BB 86K; 0.63 GO/AO; .288 opp. avg; 3.4BB/8.7K per nine; 1.52WHIP; .179 vs. LH, .314 vs. RH, .288 with RISP; 0-1 with a 6.16 ERA in 4 July starts. Hernandez has maintained his health which is huge considering he missed close to two seasons with arm problems. His problems getting right handed batters out have led to a mediocre season.  I would like to see what he could do out of the bullpen with very strong splits against lefties and the ability to strike hitters out.

Hoby Milner, 22, Phils 7th round pick in 2012 draft; 20 games (19 starts); 9-5 with a 4.40ERA; 108.1IP 115H 35BB 88K; 10HR allowed; 0.73GO/AO; .280 opp. avg., 1.38WHIP; 2.9BB/7.4K per nine; .198 vs. LH, .304 vs. RH, .333 with RISP; 4-3 with a 4.80 ERA since June 1. Milner was lights out in May, but has struggled during parts of every other month.  He seems to be hitting a bit of a wall after throwing alot of innings so far this year.

Ethan Stewart, 22, Phils 47th round pick in 2010; 15 starts; 0-4 with a 7.29ERA; 63IP 70H 68BB 45K; 0.77GO/AO; .287 opp. avg; .309 vs. LH, .280 vs. RH, .316 with RISP; 2.19WHIP; 9.7BB/6.4K per 9; 0-2 with a 7.41ERA in 4 July starts. A walk rate approaching ten per nine innings is unsustainable in any level of baseball. Not much more that needs to be said.

Note: Colin Kleven has been on the DL since late April and Gabrial Arias has been on the DL since late May.

    1. Thankfully, the Phillies have a crack medical staff that will quickly diagnose the issue and fix it…or is that a medical staff that’s on crack, I can never remember.

  1. I don’t think there’s any doubt that Biddle is hurt. Hopefully the Adam Morgan approach will work. As for Colin Kleven, he fractured a disc in his back and is out for the year.

  2. coming into the year I had high expectations for a number of these players, very disappointed with the results for a majority of those guys………..

  3. Even with a prospect laiden high minors team, this season shows that pitching is always fickle.
Pettbone = good, Cloyd back to bad, Morgan hurt, Martin still no control, Rosenberg back to pen.
Biddle high ups and down, Wright hurt, Rosin average, Buchanan not really a prospect anyway,
Milner not as good as hoped, Garner hope is now over, Stewart was a fringe guy at best, Hernandez is just too old to amount to much, but move to pen is not a bad idea but does he have an ‘out’ pitch or is he just smarter than the young hitters.
