Box Score Recap – 7/24/2013

Not a lot of excitement. A fair line from Mitch Gueller in a 6 inning CG, and a nice spot start from Chris Nichols highlight a WIL doubleheader split. Cody Asche 2-4 with a double. Tyler Cloyd pitched a real nice game, spoiled in the 8th by the bullpen and 3 passed balls from Steve Lerud. Jose Pujols went deep, his third of the year. And be sure to cue up the circus music when you read Ethan Stewart’s line. How he managed to get out of that without giving up a half dozen runs defies all logic.

And finally, Kyle Simon allowed all three base runners he inherited to score – that probably ties a record. Unless someone, sometime, was called upon to pitch in the middle of an inning, had to stay in to field a position, and then was called back to pitch again in the middle of another inning. Or the same inning, I suppose. There’s a research project for all of you.

  1. I’ve waited a little to make this post but Keivi Rojas has been impressive so far in Williamsport.

    12.2 IP, 8 H, 6 BB, 18 K. 1.42 ERA

The walks could come down a little but he’s still K’ing guys at a high rate, even better than last year in the GCL. I have an unhealthy obsession with him, I know, but I would like to see him pushed eventually. This year combined with last year, he’s got some very impressive numbers.

    1. Same with me…but there’s really nothing unhealthy about being obsessed with pizza. Except the devastating effects of cholesterol on your heart and you know, general badness that comes with potential weight gain, and all that salt.

Hmm…that does sound pretty unhealthy when I lay it out like that. I like veggies on mine, though, so it’s probably fine.

  2. The Gueller line is from a June 27 this must have been a continuation of that double header.

Dan Child is striking everyone out in the GCL. Are they planning to try him out as a starter at some point? If not, he should be in Williamsport.

    1. Oh I missed that. He came back and finished…bet that doesn’t happen very often. Less impressive, still fine.

    1. He’s a slow starting Canadian who hasn’t played the game that much. I’ve added him to my top 50 as he continues to improve this year.

  3. Funny stuff Brad;

Giles appears locked in. Would love to see him finish the season strong and I suspect he jumps to Reading with a few more quality appearances

  4. So Zach Green was batting .324 after game one, went 0-for-2 in game two and saw his average drop to .260?

    1. Ain’t stats cool, especially since game 1 was a make up of a June game. so we know where he’s gone since that late June game…. at least average-wise.

      1. he played SS his entire life, he has the big frame and the arm strength to play the position. he will be fine, just needs some more experience. less than 2 years playing a new position. he profiles perfect for the hot corner.

        1. Yeah, I was under the impression that, even if he’s unrefined, he had the tools to stay there.

    2. that was a completion of an earlier game a month ago. he was hitting .324 at the time of that game

  5. Two more hits for future 3B Cody Asche…great to see him on fire right before the deadline given that he’s almost certaintly going to be called up when they trade M. Young.

  6. Brad, Why didn’t you include Aumont in that very same record? The allowing all 3 baserunners to score record. That’s such a huge feat. “I’m so proud.”, he says with a tear in his eye.

    1. Ha – I didn’t even notice…He’s tied that record so many times before, it’s second nature to him now. And really, who brings in Aumont with men on base? That’s just asking for trouble.

  7. JP Crawford continues his blazing start to his minor league career. 1/4 with a triple, 2 BBs, and a SB. Any XBHs are gravy, while the OBP helps the speed tool play up big time.

    1. He’s looking good. Walk rate above 11%, K rate just above 17%. 7BB/6K in the last 10 games. Can’t wait to see what he does at Lakewood next season

      1. Yeah: it doesn’t mean anything. Look back at Jeter – 56 at Greensboro, Rollins – 20 in just over 200 chances in the Rookie League, etc. Errors are a poor way of judging a fielder in general, but really awful when it comes to young minor leaguers. Just keep an eye on scouting reports, which are all exceedingly positive of his ability to stick at SS.

      2. The scouting reports say that the defense is good, and could actually be a plus tool. Remember if you get to a ball that others can’t and don’t make the play you get an error. Also I wonder how good a fielder the 1B is.

  8. Nice to see Asche climbing the league leaderboard in OPS. There are only 4 qualified players ahead of him that seem like actual prospects and two of them are 25. And one is Will Myers.

    1. What’s impressive is not only how Asche continues to improve in all facets of the game, but his age (literally, if he were born one day later, he would be considered to be in his age 22 season, not his age 23 season), and the fact that the International League in general and Coca Cola Park in particular do not appear to be very hitter friendly environments. I’m not sure what the MLEs are for that league, but I’ll bet they are not too far from the minor league numbers. In short, I think Asche’s numbers have a pretty decent chance of translating well even if he did not improve and I expect he will improve. Given where the Phillies are right now, there seems to be virtually no reason why he should not be on the big league team on August 1. M. Young has trade value and, in any event, the difference between him and Cody Asche right now is probably not all that great. I would definitely err in favor of an Asche/Frandsen platoon.

      1. Asche is impressing on nearly every level and while I would prefer that he plays out the season at LV, it would make sense to get his feet wet this year if we intend to break camp in 2014 with him as our starting 3b. I don’t think there’s any question that MYoung will be traded, the only unknown is whether the Phils go with Frandsen and let Asche play out the season at LV

        1. I would aim to get Cody as much time around Utley as I could. Utley is that guy you want passing the torch to your young guys.

        2. One way or the other. Asche will be up on the September call-ups. See no sense in waiting a month. Let him come up on August 1st, and just move MYoung this weekend to either the highest bidder betwixt the Yankees or Sox since both want him.
Would seem logical to most commenters on this site, but the Rubenism thought process can be a mystery.

          1. Well I don’t have super strong feelings on this, other than expecting/hoping that M. Young will be gone in the next few days. But the counter argument is that he does still have some things to work on, and he might be able to work on those things better in AAA for the next month. I’m thinking primarily about the K rate, which has remained higher than you would like even as he has been otherwise on a hot streak.

  9. Although he has struggle as of late i like Cord Sandburg. He looks promising and i love that both he and J.P can take a walk even though its a SSS

    1. Phils called up Michael Martinez yesterday. Front-office needs its head examined – how do you read versatility in a guy who can barely hit his average? I hope they’re taking a good long look at Chris Dickerson who was DFA’d this week. Not a long term answer but certainly better than MM

        1. Great to hear. I hope he gets an at-bat.
I figured Nix would recover to career norms but he is stll terrible. Time to give up on him and let Susdorf be the PH. Unfortunately that means MMart is the backup CF.
Really sad that MMart and McDonald are both active and on the same team.

At this point I’d rather see Castro out in CF for the Phillies.

          1. Its hard not to be thrilled for the guy. He’ll be their #1 left handed pinch hitter with Nix in the lineup.

            1. Looks like the Phils are in fact looking at CDickerson. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a trade in the next day or two. Probably for a PTBNL or cash

  10. MiniMart brings versatility. He’s terrible all over the diamond as opposed to just a single position or two.

  11. Whats the best we could get for Michael Young? Bryce Brentz? Brandon Workman?

Could we package Ruiz & Young to the Yankees for De Paula and someone else? Banuelos? Is Ivan Nova in the mix?

Ruiz and Young seem like the most likely candidates to be traded, and since the Red Sox and Yankees seem to have interest in both, maybe they could be packaged.

  12. interesting stat comparison for cody asche between 2012/13
    2012 12HR 34BB 93SO 11SB 3CS (518AB)
    2013 12HR 33BB 93SO 11SB 3CS (388AB)

besides the increasing strikeout rate, he was able to reach last year’s number with less AB… very promising
