Lakewood and Clearwater both squeak out wins in their respective slugfests. Yacksel Rios got hit around a little in his start, while Josh Warner has been looks pretty good in relief. And Lehigh Valley went 12 scoreless innings with Columbus before Justin Friend finally gave up a solo HR in the 13th. I’ll have to skip the graphic for now, maybe get it up later, but here’s a place to discuss.

Aaron Altherr with another solid game. Now hitting .281/.347/.486/.833. He’s got 9 homers and 28 doubles, while stealing 17/20 bases. Impressive year, IMO.

Maybe move him up to Reading in August for the last month, give him a taste of AA pitching. Move Anthony Hewitt up to CLW to clear for him.

There’s no spot for him there and Perkins will go before him.

He’s still striking out a ton. He’d be eaten alive in AA.

Made it out to the GCL game yesterday. Impressed with Venn Biter’s approach at the plate this game- line drive swing, fouled off several pitches to worked a walk that led to the tying run. He just seemed dialed in and was going to hit the ball hard. Sandberg looked really athletic and Crawford was very smooth in the field and had several good swings. Surprised with Oberto, I expected a big guy, but he’s built more like a full back, 5-10/11 and probably 200. If he wasn’t a lefty you could see him catching. Wasn’t really impressed with Trey Williams- he was fooled often at the plate and missed a catch at 3rd that led to a run. Crawford was charged with the error on the throw. Never heard of the starting pitcher- Ranfi Casimiro- but the guy is huge. I believe the 6’8″ listed and built like a small forward. Effortless on the mound and got a ton of swings and misses. Anyone have background on Casimiro?

Thanks for the report! Ranfi was signed out of the DR in 2011 (same class as tocci) as an overage sign, which means we probably didnt pay him much. He pitched his first year there in the DSL and put up moderate numbers with a ton of walks and some good K’s. Last year he came stateside and pitched in the GCL with again moderate numbers, walks went down a bit in 38 innings pitched, but so did the strikeouts a bit. This year hes again in the GCL with nice looking ERA, a much better walk rate, but his hits/9 are rising and his K/9 has been falling. I have never really heard much about what kind of stuff he has, but it looks like he is at least starting to control it better. I’ve heard tell that he can sit 93-95 with his fastball. And thats all ive got.

I’ve been paying attention to him in box scores because of his size. 93-95 mph fastball from a 6’8″ guy would be pretty sick. His numbers are good but not great and he’s old for the GCL, so I’m not sure what to make of it. If/when he moves up a level it’ll be interesting to see how he does.

for someone who has zero pitch recognition Franco sure isnt striking out much. Am I right Keith? Not even against Matt Barnes, Anthony Raunado and Noe Ramirez. All former big time college conference aces.

BillyVig (Chicago): Can Maikel Franco be a big league all star?
Ben Badler: He has that upside, sure. The swing is unusual, and that’s always going to be the knock on him, but I haven’t seen it give him any major issues yet with plate coverage even against good pitching, which alleviates concerns I would normally have over a guy with a pronounced arm-bar swing. And the power. There’s plenty of power.

I’m trying to figure out when Biddle will be pitching next because I’d like to attend one of the games in Binghamton, according to my calculations it should be Tuesday. Anybody have an opinion?

I was watching that game on tv. He just completely lost the strike zone there for a bit. Looked like Rick Vaughn. That aside. He was pounding the outside corner and his curveball looked fantastic when it was finding the zone.

He was throwing his curveball for strikes, which is always a good sign for him. As Joe and Anon pointed out, there was some of his regular wildness mixed in. I think he nibbles too much for a guy with his stuff. I know his goal is to strike everybody out, which is ok, but not at the expense of so many baserunners.

Read something on Baseball Prospectus where they wrote that J.P. Crawford and Cord Sandberg have great leadership qualities. Crawford is mature beyond his years and great teammate. The other players look up to him. Also very complimentary of Sandberg. Said he has the qualities of a quarterback which he was. That is great to read. I immediately thought of Rollins and Utley. Maybe these two will be the leaders of the next generation?

Interesting as soon as Franco faces a top pitcher in AA, 0 for. Wonder when the Phils will rework the swing.

Its interesting that his BABIP regressed slightly?

Seriously, rework it right now after two line drives and no Ks vs Matt Barnes! He put his bat on the ball every PA.

Noticed that Colvin came in out of the pen. I hope that is a permanent move. When does Austin Wright join him?

Colvin could do well in that. Colvin and Martin could both be live arms if/when the Phillies decide to make that move

That is the glass half full way of looking at the situation. All three of them have/had the potential to be nice mid rotation starters. Martin is going to start atleast the rest of the year because some coach (Dubee I think?) said that he could most likely be the next in line for a call up if a starter goes down, and for the sake of the org. you can’t convert every starter with good stuff into a reliever at AA/AAA

that is a sad collection of upper half outfielders , It is possible Duggan and Perkins and maybe Gillies can become something , the rest look doomed to be backups and pinch hitters if they are lucky . Ugh, when is next years draft , and why havent the phillies signed any international guys this year ,beside the big German
